Dragons, the native inhabitants of Teyvat, were the undisputed rulers of land, sea, and sky. However, the arrival of The First Throne, Phanes, heralded the end of their reign.

Humanity then took center stage and, under the leadership of numerous Gods whose nature was to [love humanity], became the protagonists of Teyvat.

But the dragons had merely withdrawn from the stage of history. That did not mean this great race had gone extinct in Teyvat. Quite a few lesser dragon species remained, and even pureblooded members of the Dragon Race could be subdued by those who had attained sufficient strength.

After an unknown number of years, the Dragon King [Nibelung] obtained a power of darkness from beyond the world and returned to Teyvat. Leading the surviving Dragon Sovereigns, Nibelung rebelled against the order defined by the outsiders and fought an unprecedented, never-to-be-repeated war against the Heavenly Principles. The fighting was so brutal that the entire world nearly collapsed.

That great war finally came to a close with the death of the Dragon King [Nibelung], and the Dendro Dragon Apep was a survivor of both wars.

Yet the power of darkness the Dragon King had brought back from beyond the world did not vanish with the Dragon King's death. Instead, it remained.
