Jian Ran hadn't said that just to fool a ghost.
He really did have a personality disorder, his disposition so indifferent that he couldn't empathize with anyone.
If he hadn't spent more than a decade cultivating in seclusion in the Mystical Sect, Jian Ran might have long since become a scourge on society, turning everything upside down.
That was why he performed so remarkably when it came to resolving and eliminating resentment domains.
Mainly, Jian Ran was completely incapable of understanding the pain people suffered before death,
and even if they had suffered an enormous injustice, he felt it was no big deal...
In simple, everyday terms, he seemed to have a screw loose. He was bold and not the least bit precious, capable of charging straight in and fighting ghosts before he even understood what was going on.
If he hadn't spent years in the entertainment industry, picking up some professional skills,
Jian Ran really couldn't have taken on the job of being a stand-in,
or he would have kept making himself sick enough to throw up...
So Jian Ran remained unmoved by the vengeful ghost's pleas for mercy. He grabbed the wet, slimy hair, intending to drag it out,
but from deep inside the metal cabinet suddenly came a piercing wail, like that of a newborn baby.
His body abruptly froze. Frowning, he blurted out, "Y-you really did give birth?!"
Before his words had even faded, a black shadow shot out of a corner of the empty guest room, rushing straight at Jian Ran with baleful energy.
That surge of baleful energy was powerful enough to force the unprepared Jian Ran a step backward.
The hand bones wrapped in hair naturally loosened as well, losing their grip.
The metal cabinet slammed shut with a bang, then vanished into thin air, leaving only a large puddle of slimy water on the floor.
Jian Ran's expression soured. He slowly turned his head, narrowing his eyes at the culprit.
Li Zongsheng's figure swayed, a ferocious expression appearing on his face,
then he dropped to his knees without another word. "Bro, please spare me."
Jian Ran snorted, then laughed. "Do I look like that kind of... good person?"
And so, standing outside the wooden door, Lu Yanting heard a man's voice wailing and begging for mercy inside. The corners of his lips couldn't help curving upward as he murmured in his deep, magnetic voice,
"A good person?"
"Not really."
Li Zongsheng's agonized screams echoed not only through the corridor but also through the first-floor lobby.
Ji Yuanming, whom Yu Fengyi had already dragged downstairs, was deathly pale. His terrified eyes seemed to recall something, and he raised his hands to cover his ears. His whole body looked terribly contorted and conflicted, his mouth tightly shut without making a sound.
Li Yuan stole a glance at him, thinking, What kind of terrifying thing did this guy go through?
How did a perfectly fine supermodel end up like this?
He was told not to follow, but he wouldn't listen.
Now look what happened.
He might have to go to a psychiatric hospital for treatment once the variety show ended...
After an unknown amount of time, the sounds upstairs began to fade.
The trembling ostriches slowly stood up, craning their heads toward the stairway.
Suddenly, a black shadow appeared, stretching longer and longer.
One timid crew member had already begun screaming,
"Ah-ghost-a ghost-"
It's coming down!
Those words were still in his throat when he saw Jian Ran's beautiful face, dark with displeasure. Jian Ran cut him off sharply,
"Ghost, ghost-what the hell are you screaming for?!"
"Get me a glass of water!"
The crew member's voice stopped abruptly. He let out a startled hiccup, then said, "Sure, right away."
Jian Ran swept a chilly gaze around the room, then strode toward the sofa.
Lu Yanting followed close behind, his incomparably handsome face showing not a trace of displeasure. Once Jian Ran plopped down, he took the seat right beside him.
The still-running camera captured the scene, and the fans immediately erupted,
[Holy shit, is Jian Ran that charming? He's got Lu Yanting willingly acting as his little sidekick?!]
[What exactly did Jian Ran do upstairs?! Why was a woman wailing one minute and a man screaming bloody murder the next? Are these special effects for the show or not? Can the relevant authorities step in and give us an answer?!]
[I think it's fake? After all, no one's actually died so far. Though some shots look pretty realistic, and the Guests and crew are all pretty convincing...]
[Oh my god, forget whether there are ghosts. Look at that doting gaze of Lu Yanting's. I'm fucking gone, okay? No wonder he never takes romantic roles. He just hadn't met the right person!]
[I won't comment on the hopeless romantic above, but according to reliable information, a certain Non-Natural Research Organization has already sealed off and surrounded the Taihang Mountains. No one is allowed in... With an operation that big, it's hard not to think of some kind of unusual incident.]
No one in the Mountain Villa had the presence of mind to pay attention to how hot the livestream had become, much less knew that the fan count was soaring and already approaching the concurrent-viewer record set by the top-ranked stream.
Li Yuan finally abandoned his lofty ambitions. With a mournful face, he approached Jian Ran, bent at the waist, and asked cautiously,
"Jian Ran, can we survive tonight?"
"If you don't give the word, none of us dare go upstairs."
Jian Ran crossed his legs like a lord, accepted the glass of water from the crew member, and leisurely took a sip before saying, "Tonight should be fine. Wait until the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month."
As though granted a pardon, Li Yuan instantly straightened up. "As long as we're fine! Come on, let's go upstairs and sleep. First thing tomorrow morning, we're getting out of this shithole!"
Qi Rui came over. "Assistant director, you're finally willing to leave?!"
Li Yuan rolled his eyes at him. "If I fucking stay here any longer, I'll be fucking carrying my heart around in my hands."
The people in the lobby dispersed, heading upstairs to get ready for bed.
Jian Ran curled his lips, flashing Lu Yanting an unrestrained smile. "Who gave them that confidence?"
"Leaving first thing tomorrow morning, huh?"
Lu Yanting pressed his lips together, his deep, dark gaze settling on that dazzlingly beautiful face. An unfamiliar feeling actually rose in his heart,
as though something were breaking through the soil...
"What are you planning to do?"
After a long while, he asked in a low, husky voice.
Jian Ran tipped his head back and folded his arms behind it. "What can I do? Wait for them to come knocking."
"And the insiders,"
"wait for them to give themselves away."
He stretched, revealing a strip of pale skin at his waist that was particularly eye-catching in the dim space.
Lu Yanting's gaze naturally dropped, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Once filming ends, would you be interested in..."
Before he could finish, a commotion suddenly broke out upstairs. Someone ran down in a panic. "Jian Ran, something's wrong!"
"Ji Yuanming's bleeding for no apparent reason. H-he looks like he's dying!"
"Hurry and take a look!"
Jian Ran furrowed his brows, making no attempt to hide the distaste on his exquisite, beautiful face. Wild and defiant, he turned, coming into full view of the camera.
"Whether he dies or not,"
"what the hell does that have to do with me?"
"I'm not his dad!"
