Background / History
Family conflict and return from abroad
Lu Yuhuan studied abroad before returning home during summer break. Although he told Zhong Fanrui that he would leave after his exams, he privately framed his return as necessary to prevent the Lu Family from being handed over to someone else 111.
His homecoming exposed deep distrust within the family. Old Master Lu demanded that he never harm his relatives again, while another family member referred to him having hurt his own brother. Lu Yuhuan claimed that he had reflected on his mistakes abroad, but after dinner he threatened the relatives who judged him 123.
Old Master Lu later attributed his behavior to jealousy and inadequate parental discipline. He believed Lu Yuhuan was not fundamentally bad and hoped he could return to the right path 143.
Conflict over Jian Ran
Lu Yuhuan provoked Lu Yanting by announcing an interest in Jian Ran and suggesting that they might meet at the Cruise Ship Gala. He dismissed Zhong Fanrui as unimportant despite having allowed him to accompany him home 111 123.
After Lu Yanting was hospitalized, Lu Yuhuan approached Jian Ran and claimed that his younger brother only wanted a partner surnamed Jian to break the Lu Family curse. Jian Ran rejected his attempt to undermine their relationship, leaving Lu Yuhuan furious 139 140.
He subsequently attended Jian Ran’s first family dinner uninvited, accused his grandfather of favoritism, and mocked the Lu Family’s short lifespans. Jian Ran answered with a warning of impending bloodshed. Unable to tolerate being ridiculed, Lu Yuhuan threatened retaliation and stormed out 142 143.
Pursuit of Jian Dan
After leaving the dinner, Lu Yuhuan met Jian Dan, a newly hired security guard at his apartment building. Jian Dan’s surname and resemblance to Jian Ran caught his attention. When Jian Dan helped escort him home, they fell together and accidentally kissed 144.
Their next encounters took place at a bar where Jian Dan worked. Lu Yuhuan questioned him about Jian Ran, rescued him from a drunk patron, and persuaded him to give him a ride on his electric scooter 146 147. His attempts to intervene on Jian Dan’s behalf did not always succeed: Jian Dan rejected a drinking-room confrontation as a rich young master’s game, then pinned Lu Yuhuan against a wall and warned him not to treat him as a pushover 156.
Lu Yuhuan continued pursuing him through campus visits, rides, and physical advances despite repeated objections. During a visit to his villa, Jian Dan discovered printed photographs of Jian Ran; Lu Yuhuan explained them as part of the Lu Family’s background investigations 159 162.
He eventually declared to his grandfather that he had found true love and offered to surrender his inheritance rights in exchange for permission to transfer to Jian Dan’s school. Jian Ran challenged his assumption that Jian Dan would accept him 173 174. A public confession involving a banner also failed: Jian Dan rejected his offer to pay for overseas tuition and told him to give up 175.
After Jian Dan blocked him, Lu Yuhuan sought Jian Ran’s help, addressing him as “Brother-in-law.” He then joined Jian Dan’s exchange journey and arranged for them to share a double dormitory room at Swhayton University 180 182. His claim that Jian Ran had approved their relationship was exposed as a bluff when Jian Dan offered to telephone his brother 182 183.
Zhong Fanrui’s supernatural control
While abroad with Jian Dan, Lu Yuhuan unexpectedly accepted a call from Zhong Fanrui and said that he missed him, despite consciously wanting nothing to do with him. He contacted Lu Yanting because his words and behavior seemed beyond his control 184 186.
Zhong Fanrui’s arrival strained the developing relationship with Jian Dan. Lu Yuhuan internally recoiled from Zhong Fanrui while outwardly welcoming him, and Jian Dan prepared to leave their shared accommodation 186.
Recognizing that Lu Yuhuan’s expressions did not match his conduct, Jian Dan consulted Jian Ran. Following his brother’s instructions, he mixed the ashes of a burned talisman into Lu Yuhuan’s beer. The treatment eased the control enough for Lu Yuhuan to refuse some of Zhong Fanrui’s demands, though involuntary affectionate remarks continued 187 188.
Lu Yuhuan later managed to tell Zhong Fanrui directly that he did not like him and refused to leave with him. After Zhong Fanrui departed, he immediately sought praise and a reward from Jian Dan 193.
Later developments
When Zhong Fanrui sent evidence that Qin Hong had framed the Jian Family, Lu Yuhuan forwarded it to his father and asked him to pass it to the police 204.
By the finale, he and Jian Dan were together and preparing to return home for Jian Ran and Lu Yanting’s wedding. Impatient for their own marriage, Lu Yuhuan complained until Jian Dan promised that they would marry after his graduation 212.
Appearance
- Face and expression: Handsome, with dark eyes, thin lips, and a frequently arrogant or mischievous smile 111 144 159.
- Build: Broad shoulders, a narrow waist, lean contours, and long legs; his hands have long, slender fingers 156 162.
- Complexion: Fair skin 162.
- Presentation: Wears bespoke suits and sunglasses, projecting the polished confidence of a wealthy heir 144 159 182.
Personality
Lu Yuhuan is provocative, calculating, and acutely sensitive to his place within the family. He accuses Old Master Lu of favoritism and responds to criticism with threats. Relatives fear his willingness to retaliate behind their backs, while Bai Jingchuan describes him as notorious for underhanded tricks 123 142 162.
His public playboy image is partly deliberate. He privately dislikes nightlife as a waste of time and energy, but attends gatherings to lull people watching him into complacency. Once he becomes interested in Jian Dan, those same gatherings become opportunities to see him 168.
In romance, he is persistent, possessive, and frequently manipulative: he continues after refusals, arranges shared accommodation, and falsely invokes Jian Ran’s approval 175 182 183. His attachment also changes his priorities. He offers to relinquish his inheritance, seeks cooperation with Lu Yanting, and becomes openly needy for Jian Dan’s affection and reassurance 174 186 193 212.
