It was year 47 of Konoha, one month after the Third Kazekage's death.
By the river.
Torrential rain poured from the sky, accompanied by peals of thunder.
Beneath a large umbrella with metal ribs sat a young man.
Wearing a Konoha ninja forehead protector, he was fishing under the umbrella.
"Yūto, the meeting's about to start. Stop spending every day fishing!"
The newcomer wore a raincoat and said irritably:
"You've got the nerve to go fishing in this weather? Aren't you afraid of getting struck by lightning?"
With that, the newcomer left using the Body Flicker Technique.
Yūto sighed and muttered:
"If it weren't for the chance of getting struck dead by lightning, who the hell would go fishing in this weather...?"
He put away his fishing rod, draped a raincoat over himself, and slowly headed toward the clan compound.
He had walked about ten meters when a bolt of lightning struck the umbrella by the river.
In an instant, the umbrella turned pitch-black. Its canopy had burned away, leaving only the ribs.
"Damn it, I left too soon!"
Uchiha Yūto was one of the vast army of transmigrators.
But he was a little different from the others.
Simply put, he was never supposed to have died. His transmigration was entirely the result of a mistake by the Transmigrator Administration Bureau.
So, to compensate Yūto, the Transmigrator Administration Bureau had applied for a special benefit for him.
If Yūto died accidentally after transmigrating, he could return to his original world with at least a hundred million in compensation and a set of superpowers.
Moreover, the amount was tied to how he died. The more spectacular his death, the more money he would receive.
For example, if his death caused ten people to experience intense emotional turmoil, that meant one billion!
A hundred people meant ten billion!
Of course, if he died without anyone noticing, he would only get a hundred million.
Suicide was out, too. If he killed himself, he would have died for nothing, with neither money nor a chance to come back to life.
In other words, he could only receive compensation if he died due to forces beyond his control, such as a natural disaster, being killed by an unbeatable enemy, and so on.
Deliberately holding back in combat counted as suicide, too.
Yūto had originally wanted to pursue a higher payout, but in the year since his transmigration, all he had managed to get was a body covered in injuries. He had never once faced mortal danger.
He had, however, moved his teammates deeply. After their missions, they trained like mad, and their strength improved rapidly.
They were no longer Genin. Rather than going on missions with him, they were now leading new Ninja Academy students.
That left Yūto in an awkward position.
Without anyone to team up with, a Genin like him could only take harmless, low-ranking missions. He would never encounter danger again.
Now even dying spectacularly was impossible.
All he could do now was try to expose himself to various possible accidents, such as fishing during a thunderstorm.
This fishing trip was probably the closest he had come to success. Unfortunately, he had still been one step ahead of death and failed to die.
Of course, the Transmigrator Administration Bureau employee had also told him that he could simply enjoy life in the world of Naruto.
But he had transmigrated into an Uchiha!
An Uchiha clansman who had never even appeared in the original story, at that. Enjoy life?
Enjoy it, his ass!
Rather than die for no clear reason on a mission, in a war, during the Nine-Tails' attack, or on the night of the clan massacre, he might as well get himself killed early and return to his original world to enjoy life a day sooner!
Yūto shook his head, turned, and left the riverside.
When he reached the clan compound, a colleague from the Konoha Military Police Force told him the meeting was being held at the police headquarters. With no other choice, he headed there instead.
He could hardly be blamed for getting the location wrong. Lately, he had been thinking about nothing but how to die, leaving no room in his head for anything else.
Normally, a weakling like Yūto would never have been allowed to become an officer in the Konoha Military Police Force.
His reckless fighting style on missions had probably caught Fugaku's attention, prompting him to recruit Yūto into the force as a special exception.
Deep down, Fugaku was still on the village's side.
Yūto's habit of shielding his teammates behind him in the face of danger happened to fit the Will of Fire promoted by the Third.
Yūto was at his wits' end. Patrolling every day meant dealing with nothing but petty nonsense, seriously slowing his progress toward getting himself killed.
As he reached the door to the police headquarters' meeting room, Yūto heard a heated argument inside.
He knew both sides of the argument well. One was naturally Fugaku, the Uchiha Clan Head and chief of the Konoha Military Police Force. The other was someone who was not a member of the force-the Uchiha Great Elder!
Yūto found it a little strange. Why was the Great Elder attending a police meeting?
Hadn't he always hated the Konoha Military Police Force, believing it to be a cage the village had built for the Uchiha?
With that question in mind, Yūto pushed open the meeting room door and quietly slipped into a corner to eavesdrop.
The Great Elder's aged voice rang out first. "Fugaku, the situation in the Shinobi World is uncertain. War is about to break out."
"At a critical moment like this, the village is making the police increase patrols. They're clearly trying to keep the Uchiha locked up in the police force and stop us from earning glory on the battlefield!"
Fugaku sounded somewhat weary as he answered. He had heard similar statements countless times over the past few days and had long since lost the desire to keep explaining.
"Great Elder, the village is considering the bigger picture."
"Guarding against spies is one of the police force's duties. It's precisely because war is about to break out that we need to step up patrols and prevent spies from entering Konoha to steal intelligence."
"Are you saying we Uchiha shouldn't even do our own jobs properly?"
"Bullshit!" The Great Elder's voice instantly rose several times louder as he roared in anger:
"Guarding against spies stopped being the police force's responsibility years ago!"
"That bastard Tobirama Senju, who stole the Hokage's seat from the Uchiha, dumped all those missions on the ANBU!"
"His disciple Hiruzen Sarutobi is even more devious. He even took interrogation work away from the police and handed it to an Interrogation Department that had only been established a few years earlier."
"As I see it, Konoha no longer has room for our Uchiha Clan. We might as well stage a coup and take back the Hokage's seat sooner rather than later!"
There were quite a few Uchiha hardliners in the police force, too. As soon as the Great Elder finished speaking, people immediately voiced their support.
"Yes! The Great Elder is right! We should stage a coup!"
"I've had enough of the village shutting us out. We might as well rebel!"
Seeing their intense reactions, Yūto immediately perked up.
A coup was great! A coup meant people could die!
Given the current gap in strength between the village and the Uchiha, the clan would definitely be crushed if they launched a coup.
After all, at present, there was at most one Uchiha with the Mangekyō Sharingan: Uchiha Fugaku.
The original story had never made it clear whether he actually had the Mangekyō Sharingan.
As long as Yūto charged to the very front during the coup, he would be the first to die.
Besides, as an Uchiha, he would be forced to take part in the coup. That would hardly count as suicide.
If he died first and put on a little performance before his death, he would surely have everyone shedding floods of tears. Who knew how many times his compensation would multiply!
Yūto made a rough calculation. Judging by how these emotional Uchiha usually behaved, it should be at least ten billion. Even without superpowers, he could live a life of extravagant indulgence!
At that thought, Yūto immediately leaped out of the crowd and shouted:
"A coup! We have to stage a coup!"
Noticing that everyone had turned their attention toward him, Yūto climbed straight onto the table.
"My fellow clansmen, do you know how many times more we Uchiha pay for the same kilogram of rice than everyone else?"
"Three whole times! Three whole times!"
"In a single year, the extra money the Uchiha Clan spends wouldn't even fit in a horse-drawn carriage!"
"So, my dear fellow clansmen, we must launch the coup immediately!"
"I think tonight's weather looks excellent. Let's start preparing our weapons right away!"
When Yūto finished his speech, the room fell utterly silent.
Not a single Uchiha responded.
To his surprise, he discovered that the entire Uchiha Clan was all talk. When it came to a coup, they were all words and no action!
