| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pulse Movement | 3 5 10 17 | Remained stalled for years despite exhausting his family’s wealth. Introductory Daoist methods produced almost no results. |
| Qi Gathering | 23 33 | Began absorbing spiritual energy through his entire body. Gained access to basic spells, simple talismans, gang qi, and effective use of cultivation pills and Spirit Stones. |
| Foundational swordsmanship breakthrough | 39 40 | Repeated battles against a Sword Soul transformed his timing, judgment, and offensive technique. Longer survival in the Soul Realm also allowed his physical cultivation to proceed. |
| Foundation Cultivation | 79 80 | Accumulated sword training culminated in a breakthrough. Spiritual power gathered in his dantian, providing stable reserves and finer control of sword qi and basic techniques. |
| Sword Gall and Sword Intent confirmed | 193 | Yu Zhengxing identified these as the first two Sword Dao realms Hou Niao had attained, with Sword Consciousness as his next hurdle. |

| Heaven-Connecting confirmed | 577 | Fought at the spearhead against the Undead Legion. His single flying sword remained powerful, but he could not yet divide its light to cover numerous enemies. |
| Further mastery of the Forward Word Formula | 711 | A prolonged running battle against undead, including four Golden Core-level Eyeless Monsters, deepened its sword momentum of sole supremacy. |
| Flying-sword foundation reset | 768 777 | Accepted destruction of his flying sword rather than his cultivation after killing Duan Wu Qian. Subsequently struggled for years to cultivate the Strange Stone Orchid and form a sword seed in his Purple Mansion. |
| Golden Core confirmed; Sword Light Division developing | 881 | Practiced dividing and recombining sword light. Controlling the gathering of eighty flying swords remained difficult, while incorporating Great Dao meaning was still beyond his immediate goals. |
| Accelerated swordsmanship development | 889 895 901 | Adapted the Azure Sky Sword Lineage inheritance with Yueduo’s intensive instruction. Twenty years of training substantially improved his practical swordsmanship. |
| Nascent Soul confirmed | 997 | Discussed whether he and Quanzhen’s other Nascent Soul cultivators would leave to explore the Universe, and who would remain to protect the sect. |
| One Sword, a Thousand Thunders — modest achievement | 1007 | Could release roughly a hundred fine thunderbolts with one sword strike; the technique’s name does not indicate a fixed number. |
Background / History
Criminal-law upbringing
Hou Niao was the only son of Hou Xuan, a veteran criminal-law clerk in Fufeng City. His father knew Anhe’s penal statutes intimately but also practiced bribery, extortion, and manipulation. He taught Hou Niao the law’s respectable side, then died before passing on his corrupt methods. Hou Niao inherited his position and became an uncompromising official 2.
His childhood revolved around statutes rather than recreation. After beginning cultivation, he spent his inheritance searching for a suitable method, eventually exchanging a substantial household residence for an ordinary courtyard home. Years of failure led him to place official service ahead of cultivation 3 4 5.
The Fufeng case and departure for Quanzhen
As the Tiji responsible for Huangguo Town, Hou Niao sought an investigation into the destruction of Meng Qiaolian’s life, but official concealment and mutual protection defeated his efforts. He ultimately killed Young Master Wang, bringing himself into conflict with both the authorities and the Daoist Sect. He and Old Meng had not coordinated their actions, but shared the conviction that the guilty should be punished 2.
Hou Niao refused opportunities to flee, believing that escape would invalidate the principles he had upheld for twenty years. Before leaving his household, he gave money to Sister Hua and left the remaining funds and house to Uncle Sun 4 9.
After his release in the Divine Capital, Daoist Chongling offered him a route into cultivation: infiltrate the Shan Kingdom’s Demonic Sect in exchange for credit with Anhe and a possible future return. Chongling advised him to concentrate first on surviving and earning trust, rather than immediately supplying intelligence. Hou Niao subsequently traveled to Jincheng and entered Quanzhen 16 17 31 33.
Early Quanzhen service and Yinling
At Quanzhen, Hou Niao discovered that a mysterious vortex in his Purple Mansion allowed his soul to enter the Soul Realm. Repeated lethal encounters there became the foundation of his swordsmanship. He also served as a runner under Inspector Huang, encountering the sect’s system for introducing young disciples to worldly affairs 35 39 51.
While escorting refugees through White Poplar Forest, he guarded a convoy of six deer sleighs against increasingly aggressive beasts. The disaster left him carrying a little girl who was the group’s sole survivor. With Daoist Zhan’s assistance, he entrusted her to Daoist Xi 64 67 70 73.
After reaching Foundation Cultivation, he accepted a territorial assignment without asking his influential acquaintances for a favorable posting. In Yinling, he found Quanzhen divided between comfortable officeholders and patrol cultivators who defended settlements and hunted demons. He preferred the patrol members’ direct, battle-centered atmosphere 82 84 92 476.
Minister of Justice Prefecture and the seas
Hou Niao sought admission to the Minister of Justice Prefecture after a confrontation with the Duan Household, openly requesting Li Chuping’s protection. He became an Accompanying Rong and undertook assignments under the prefecture’s oversight 434 435 517.
At sea, he demonstrated an ability to rally otherwise independent pirate leaders. During the dispute over Tiger Tooth’s territory, he negotiated a twelve-fighter succession contest with Bao Wen instead of allowing an unpredictable melee, then claimed the first fighting position himself 490 491 492.
An assignment in Jianye ended with his permanent expulsion from the city. He returned the recovered bodies to the prefecture, refused Judge Wan’s proposed infiltration mission, and demanded reimbursement for the Spirit Stones spent contacting underground factions 515.
Xiao True Person later released him from his original undercover obligation. Anhe’s principal conflict was with the Wu Sect rather than Shanmen, making the arrangement obsolete. Xiao asked only that Hou Niao help Anhe when circumstances permitted and Shanmen’s interests would not suffer 543.
Northwest restoration and the True Disciple dispute
In the Northwest, Hou Niao fought undead and supported the restoration of Ancient Loulan through its shelterbelt. He planned to steal the Water Spirit Pearl and place it in an underground river to strengthen the project. Lin Xiashi agreed to help him enter the Flowing Sand River, on condition that he conceal his Sword Cultivator identity and avoid wanton killing of Qin Sect disciples 577 582.
Hou Niao nevertheless resisted becoming an instrument of a faction. When Yu Zhengxing tried to enlist him more closely, he insisted that his participation, methods, and limits would remain his own decisions 701.
His confrontation with Tang Yan raised his reputation and brought him into higher-level circles. At Quanzhen’s annual gathering, he rejected an ordinary True Disciple position and challenged Duan Wu Qian for the Constellation True Disciple position. He killed Duan in their duel, then accepted the destruction of his flying sword as punishment rather than the loss of his cultivation 692 761 762 768.
Rebuilding and sect leadership
Following his expulsion from Shanmen Quanzhen, Xiao True Person accepted Hou Niao as an Anhe true disciple. Hou Niao did not complete the associated formalities until much later. His pursuit of a stronger flying-sword foundation included prolonged work with the Strange Stone Orchid and, eventually, adaptation of the Azure Sky Sword Lineage’s inheritance under Yueduo 768 777 889 968.
He later appears as Shanmen Quanzhen’s leader while retaining his Anhe affiliation. This dual position required him to distinguish personal ties from institutional interests, particularly when advising Anhe about its future 958 989 990.
He also became responsible for a young peacock who had secretly reached Jinxiu. After attempting to avoid the responsibility, he brought her to Anhe Palace, concealed her identity as his “nineteenth aunt,” and agreed to consult her before leaving her behind during the sixty years preceding Heaven-Opening 982 986 987.
Personality
Hou Niao’s defining trait is persistence. His legal upbringing initially made him obsessive and inflexible, while years of cultivation failure and repeated defeats in the Soul Realm failed to break his resolve. He could acknowledge an opponent’s superior skill even after winning through his stronger soul-body rather than better technique 4 37 39.
His outlook becomes more pragmatic without losing its concern for injustice. He increasingly treats law as something to understand rather than merely obey, recognizes the importance of strength, and refuses to equate individual wrongdoing with the guilt of an entire sect. Outside his attachment to law, he is comparatively open-minded and sees no essential moral divide between Daoist and demonic cultivation 44 60 70 441.
He is independent, suspicious of manipulation, and willing to retaliate. His loyalty does not imply obedience: he repays assistance but resists anyone claiming authority over his choices. Even with capable friends, he considers concealed trump cards and mutual boundaries important safeguards 60 529 701 711.
His seriousness coexists with irreverent humor and shameless bargaining. He jokes with senior cultivators, argues over mission expenses, and uses his long-neglected Anhe registration records to demand accumulated stipends 515 564 969.
Abilities & Skills
Sword-Wielding Technique
- Specializes in close-range swordsmanship built around timing, precision, and decisive attacks rather than elaborate fixed forms 40 46.
- Initially studied Linked Strikes to Slay Generals, No-Return Sword, and Short Thrust, then expanded into softer techniques emphasizing rhythm and battlefield control 47 81.
- Can combine sword attacks with physical grappling, as demonstrated when he defeated Duan Kunshan after losing his weapon 223.
- Early limitations included poor reach against spellcasters and an inability to answer sustained medium-range attacks effectively 193 209.
Soul Realm Training
- Enters the Soul Realm through a mysterious Purple Mansion vortex while circulating his cultivation methods 35 36 80.
- Strengthens his soul-body by consuming defeated wandering souls 35 37.
- Uses repeated soul-body destruction as practical combat training; defeats return him to his physical body 39 453.
- Must survive long enough inside for his body to complete cultivation circulations; early repeated defeats obstructed his Qi Gathering 39.
- Later trains against Sword Three, whose swordsmanship exposes shortcomings in Quanzhen’s inheritance 453 769.
Flying Sword Art
- Developed Sword Consciousness through the secret art entrusted to him by Yu Zhengxing 194 210.
- Possesses fine enough control to suppress Rao Zongzhi’s flying sword directly during a friendly contest 521.
- Adapts the Azure Sky inheritance to Quanzhen’s Purple Mansion-nurtured swords, despite its original reliance on sword pellets housed in the Sea of Consciousness 889.
- Uses both Sword Light Division and a distinctive Sword Frequency, which can release dozens of flying swords without division 881 984.
- His control can be weakened by interference with Divine Sense; keeping the sword close reduces that disruption 500.
Body Sword Technique
- Can transform into a sword spirit; overcoming the Spirit Sense barrier removed an earlier restriction on initiating the technique 482.
- Practices the Forward, Array, and Formation Word Formulas, with Forward initially the most developed 452.
- Uses sword-form movement for combat and escape, though its conspicuous aura can make concealment preferable 511.
- Deepened Forward’s momentum through his desert battle against the pursuing undead 711.
Soul Detection and Sword Net
- Detects concealed Soul Ghosts and identifies their vulnerable soul essence with exceptional accuracy 86 87.
- Claimed that his sensitivity to Soul Ghosts had existed since childhood; the gatekeeper interpreted this as a possible special constitution, not a confirmed diagnosis 86.
- Selected Sword Net, a supplementary discipline coordinating eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness 46.
- Uses the Chichā Technique to monitor an opponent’s withdrawal 209.
Thunder Techniques
- Turned Yu Shangque’s borrowed heavenly thunder into an opportunity to study lightning’s principles rather than simply withstand it 462.
- Earlier thunder-infused sword attacks were limited by his inability to draw fully on the power of heaven and earth 733.
- Later reached modest achievement in One Sword, a Thousand Thunders, an area-effect technique suited to barriers, swarms, and creatures particularly vulnerable to thunder 1007.
Purple Mansion Kill
- Can perform a spiritual attack within the Purple Mansion 916.
- Proposed using it to weaken the Medicine-Pounding Pestle while Yueduo protected him and prepared a finishing sword strike; the supplied account does not establish the outcome 916.
Movement and Escape
- Chose Sword-Riding Technique and Sword Yu Step after entering Foundation Cultivation 80.
- Two years of focused Sword Yu Step practice allowed him to evade a Small Flowing Sand trap before it caught him 209.
- Refined unpredictable evasive movement during his years at sea and can use earth escape to travel beneath desert sand 494 567 698.
Investigation and Undercover Work
- Applies his criminal-law training to patient observation, social manipulation, and constructing plausible identities 17 197.
- Uses subtle changes in manner and presentation rather than conspicuous disguises, while memorizing streets, crowds, and escape routes under cover of ordinary sightseeing 506.
- Negotiates contest rules and public oaths to control risk before fighting 491.
- Accepted instruction in dual cultivation to help the Way of Harmony assess seven candidates through blind testing 958.
