Just as the vast war machine that was Team Rocket drove its gears to their limits for that insane "god-slaying" plan, a series of large-scale anomalies that defied the existing scientific framework were quietly unfolding in the distant waters surrounding the Kanto Region, seemingly unrelated to any of it.

The first to notice the changes in the sea were the fishermen whose families had lived off it for generations, with charts of its currents etched into their very bones.

Desan, an old fisherman working near Cinnabar Island, had cast his nets in these waters for fifty years. He could judge the weather by the taste of salt in the sea breeze and find schools of fish by the flight paths of seabirds. Yet over the past few days, all the experience he took such pride in had failed him completely.

The once mild and steady Kuroshio Current had become a wild horse that had broken its reins, chaotic and turbulent. Several times, his sturdy fishing boat had lost its bearings in waters he knew better than anywhere else, while the compass needle aboard spun wildly as though drunk. Even more unsettling were the deep-sea fish normally found only thousands of meters below the surface, now dead in vast numbers, floating belly-up and pale upon the sea, as though some invisible force had driven them out of the abyss. Without any warning, the water temperature would plummet to near freezing, instantly killing schools of fish accustomed to warmer waters.

Desan gazed at the gray sky and the sea beneath him that had become so unfamiliar, his aged face filled with confusion and fear. The sea was growing angry.

Next came unprecedented abnormal behavior among Water-type Pokémon.
