Background

Jiang Yan belongs to the fifth household of the Jiang family’s main branch. His parents died on an outside mission for the clan while he was young, after which his second uncle raised him. The household continued providing him with the same benefits as other children, an additional subsidy, and increasingly generous resources as his cultivation talent emerged 4.

At the County Dao Academy, he ranked among the best students for three consecutive years. This earned him the opportunity to obtain a rare Mutant Golden Toad, though the Jiang Household still had to spend heavily and draw on its reserves to secure it. Before Jiang Yan entered the Dao himself, the toad was his strongest trump card 3.

His family’s support included medicinal ingredients and occasional medicinal baths from childhood. Jiang Yan recognizes that this foundation gave him advantages unavailable to most commoner students 17.

Appearance

  • Youthful features: Red lips, white teeth, and an innocent-looking face that contrasts with his willingness to kill enemies 2.
  • Early academy appearance: Tall, straight posture, a ruddy complexion, and unusually bright eyes after establishing the Guiding Method; initially wears fine blue or dark blue-green Daoist robes 4 11.
  • Fire-Breathing Lineage attire: A flame-colored robe embroidered with golden cloud patterns and a small flame at the chest 48.
  • Later features: Hair tied in a topknot, a more developed frame, and fine stubble on his chin after spending a New Year at the Prefecture Academy 48.
  • Recognizable accessories: A jade thumb ring on his left hand, Jinbao perched on his shoulder, and later a white jade fly whisk while riding Yanbao 48 58.

Personality

Jiang Yan is cautious without being passive. He verifies Jiang Chi’s identity with a clan token before accepting him as a relative, repeatedly refuses invitations outside town while Desire Corpse Daoist threatens him, and spends half a night reviewing his plan before ambushing an eighth-grade opponent 19 32 76.

His restraint serves a strong ambition. He values cultivation gains, uses travel time to train, and recognizes that prestige borrowed from his master is not the same as respect earned through his own strength. Even after a breakthrough, he allows himself only a brief celebration before resuming cultivation 16 34 62.

He remembers kindness and accepts obligations rather than treating assistance as something owed to him. He intends to repay the clan’s investment, remains grateful to Jiang Yunyao for exposing Jiang Chi’s scheme, and tries to offer her and other clansmen a safer livelihood at his Daoist Arena 12 60.

Against enemies, he is calculating and lethal. He uses covert curses against Xiao Sheng, attempts to provoke Jiang Chi into violating town rules, and prepares a substitute effigy against a posthumous curse. Nevertheless, his attachment to allies can expose him: Desire Corpse attacks An Ling specifically to force Jiang Yan to remain and help her 37 71 78 99.

Abilities & Skills

Stone Book

A mysterious treasure in Jiang Yan’s mind that temporarily multiplies his mental strength, intelligence, and comprehension 5.

  • Enables him to thoroughly analyze dangerous cultivation procedures and learn methods unusually quickly 5 26 38.
  • Requires recovery after use; its early aftereffects include head pain, while a night’s sleep restores him 5.
  • Repeated use appears to temper his spirit and improve its recovery, though Jiang Yan treats this as his own observation 11.
  • He suspects it accounts for the extraordinary fortune revealed by the Immortal Stele; this connection is not confirmed 8.

Guiding and Drawing

One of the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiend Arts, also called the Guiding Method. It cultivates both Qi and the body 10 11.

  • Filters impurities from surrounding Spiritual Qi and draws pure Qi into his body 10.
  • Continues cultivating automatically, though more slowly than when he actively practices 11.
  • Doubles his normal Law Power capacity: two strands before Bronze Skin and Iron Bones, six in the lower ninth rank, and eighteen in the upper ninth rank 32 80.
  • Includes pill formulas that produce stronger-than-ordinary physical foundations during breakthroughs 32 72.
  • Does not eliminate the enormous gap between ninth-rank cultivation and a seventh-rank Daoist’s continuously replenishing Law Power 81.

Ingestion Method

The second of his two Earthly Fiend methods, focused on refining consumed resources 10 51.

  • Its initial attainment lets him digest copper and iron, extracting their essences for physical cultivation 27.
  • Complements the Guiding Method’s metal-based breakthrough pills 32.
  • Requires exceptionally durable digestive organs. Jiang Yan obtains them through a dangerous ritual involving Redfire Ginseng, Ice Crystal Grass, and the protective characters of his Dao Register 26.
  • Offers broader applications than the flame-only Fire-Consuming Qi-Transformation Technique he examines and rejects 51.

Enhanced Physique

His breakthrough methods strengthen him beyond ordinary cultivators of the same realm 33 80.

  • Lower ninth rank: Punches an anvil hard enough to crack it and flattens refined-iron hammers with Law Power-assisted kicks 33.
  • Upper ninth rank: His flesh resists a Sword Talisman, while a palm-length cut closes and becomes painless within a few breaths 80.
  • Metallic blood: His silvery-gray blood makes a metallic sound when it strikes the ground 80.
  • Regeneration limit: The Guiding Method states that his enhanced upper-ninth-rank body should regrow severed fingers, but he deliberately leaves this untested 80.

Sun and Moon Worship Technique

Uses paired spheres fashioned from sunflame stone and moonshade stone, each inscribed with complementary talismanic script 31.

  • Increases the Spiritual Qi available for cultivation by approximately one-fifteenth or one-sixteenth 31.
  • Requires replacement spheres after roughly three to five months 31.

Straw Effigy Technique

A curse technique with both defensive and offensive applications 35.

  • Makes stray bodily traces turn to dust and uses substitute effigies to block curses 35.
  • Targets others through collected traces and portrait-bearing figures 35.
  • Successfully diverts the black Qi released after Jiang Chi’s death into a prepared Straw Figure 78.
  • Can impose substantial costs: killing Xiao Sheng through an incantation empties Jiang Yan’s Law Power and leaves him unwell the following morning 37.
  • Offers little help in a direct, head-on fight 51.

Combat Dao Arts

Art Function and documented use
Sword Talisman Beheads Long-range offense that complements his close-range flame art. Used to kill Pink Ear, behead Jiang Chi, and attack the Red-Purple clansmen 52 72 78 96.
Palm-Fired Departing Flame Draws Fire-Element Spiritual Qi into the palm and shapes it into weapons such as lances and spears. Limited to nearby targets; fully mastered by his departure for East River Town 51 52 58.
Yellowstone Mystic Fire Shield A defensive Dao Art he masters but rarely uses beyond initial trials 52 76.
Fire-Walking Cloud A travel art he learns in a single day. Yanbao later replaces it for his usual transport, though Jiang Yan uses it during the Heavy Water City mission 55 76 88.

Pill Refinement

Jiang Yan purchases the fire branch of the orthodox Five Phases Pill-Forming Method and uses the Stone Book to accelerate his study of pill formulas 24 38.

  • Refines the Golden Copper Darksteel Pill for his lower-ninth-rank breakthrough 32 33.
  • Masters the Bear-Tiger Pill and Thunderclap pill formulas through sustained practice 82.
  • By the approach of the Yearly Examination, more than half the pills in each batch are reliably high-grade 82.
  • Prepares a cache of explosive Thunderfire Pills powerful enough to split away the upper half of a mountain when detonated together 101.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Storage Thumb Ring — A jade storage artifact supplied from the Jiang Household treasury before the Prefecture Examination 12.

  • White jade fly whisk — A law artifact specializing in defense and restraining enemies 58.
  • Flame Carp’s scale — More than doubles the effectiveness of his cultivation when used as a meditation seat. Jiang Yan reserves it as a potential ritual altar for an eighth-grade breakthrough 58.
  • Spirit Boat — A fast vessel given by Ying Leng, who used it before reaching the seventh rank 45.
  • Fenghuo’s jade pendant — Calms the mind and nourishes the spirit 45.

  • Three Cold Flame Talismans — Each comparable to a full-force strike from an upper-eighth-grade cultivator 76.
  • Three Divine Thunder weapons — Scale Feather Clan weapons supplied by Spitting Fire Daoist, powerful enough to threaten an eighth-grade opponent 59 76.
  • Lustful Desire Qi — A mind-bewitching strand supplied by Jiang Yunyao; Jiang Yan doubts its usefulness against Desire Corpse 76.
  • Desire Corpse’s Storage Bone Ring — Recovered after Desire Corpse’s death. Jiang Yan retains the Corpse Qi Dao-Soldier Technique for possible use while arranging to sell other spoils 108.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Entering the Prefecture Academy

Jiang Yan first appears while approaching a suspicious shepherd in the mountains. He subsequently exposes the Wolf Lord’s practice of transforming people into livestock, with his Golden Toad killing the lesser monsters at the feast 1 2.

After returning home and perfecting his flesh, he undergoes the Immortal Stele’s assessment. His measured fortune raises his golden pillar from roughly ten zhang to more than fifty, and he obtains two complementary methods on the Qi-Feeding and Method-Practicing Dao 5 8 9.

He establishes the Guiding Method before the Prefecture Examination, places fifth, and formally enrolls at Donghe Prefecture Dao Academy. Receiving the White Register then makes him an officially registered ninth-rank Dao attendant 11 17 19 21.

Escaping Jiang Chi’s Scheme

Jiang Chi initially welcomes him, explains local arrangements, and pays for a year’s lodging. Jiang Yunyao reveals that this attentiveness serves Desire Corpse’s designs, prompting Jiang Yan to confront his cousin and sever their association 20 23 25.

Unable to safely challenge the seventh-grade enemy behind Jiang Chi, Jiang Yan concentrates on cultivation, pill refinement, and protective methods. His agreement with Muling opens a route into Blowing Fire High Person’s discipleship, giving him influential backing and a private volcanic Daoist Arena 28 41 42 45.

Returning to East River Town

Jiang Yan returns under the protection of his senior brother’s Dao Army squad, carrying weapons and defensive gifts from his seniors. He accepts Skin Player and Gu-Eating as followers and recruits An Ling’s help in tracking Jiang Chi 58 59 67 70.

After killing Pink Ear and humiliating Jiang Chi, he experiences a release of accumulated pressure that helps him perfect the lower ninth rank. He and An Ling later ambush Jiang Chi; Jiang Yan foils his final sneak attack, beheads him, and diverts the resulting curse into a Straw Figure 72 75 78.

Yearly Examination and Desire Corpse

Following his upper-ninth-rank breakthrough, Jiang Yan signs an examination alliance with An Ling. They infiltrate Scale Clan territory disguised as Red-Scarlet siblings, tasked with destroying a Heavy Water Mine 80 81 87.

Their unusually smooth progress raises suspicions that someone is manipulating the examination. Jiang Yan uses the Straw Figure linked to Jiang Chi’s death to draw Desire Corpse into the situation. Once their disguises fail, he and An Ling fight their way deeper into the mine, while the resulting explosion attracts their pursuer 91 96.

Jiang Yan later confronts Desire Corpse in a cave and detonates his prepared Thunderfire Pills, collapsing much of the mountain while remaining mostly unharmed. By his return to town, Desire Corpse is confirmed dead. Jiang Yan sorts the recovered techniques and possessions before Long Yan arrives to invite him back to the Daoist Arena 101 108.
