Dusk deepened.
Amid the haphazard jumble of buildings, a figure climbed swiftly along the walls on hands and feet, like an enormous gecko. As his force drew inward, his cuffs and trouser legs repeatedly tightened inward, without making the slightest sound.
Lian Youming climbed to a high point and surveyed his surroundings. Only then did he see that there were very few lights to the south, leaving it in darkness. Presumably, most ordinary people had already evacuated. The north, however, blazed with lights, brightness and darkness confronting each other.
He did not hurry over, but circled the surroundings instead, familiarizing himself with the terrain inside the Walled City.
A long street separated the south and north districts. Dilapidated, disorderly storefronts lined both sides, and old signs of every size hung densely at different heights, upstairs and down. Guards controlled the entrance, making it a clearly defined boundary between opposing sides.
Unlike the desolation on their side, the north district bustled with people. There was crying, cursing, laughter, and those strange cries. Drunks lay collapsed beside the street, and someone was carried out by his hands and feet and thrown outside. White foam spilled from his mouth; after barely struggling twice, he stopped moving.
Lian Youming only glanced around a couple of times before his gaze darkened, his urge to kill mounting ever higher.
He waited a long while longer, until the sky had darkened completely, before moving on hands and feet, silently melting into the night.
With security like this, getting inside unnoticed would probably not be easy. It all depended on whether Gan Xuantong could restrain himself.
Had this man's body remained whole and his state of mind unblemished, Lian Youming might not have been confident of provoking him. But now...
It was hard to say.
