Background
Song Yan was an ordinary Chinese student on Blue Star before transmigrating into the cultivation world. He became an abandoned infant beside the Black Creek River and was taken in by Song Ying, an itinerant physician who settled in Shiliang Town. His grandfather named him Song Yan in the hope that he would live safely, happily, and at ease 1 9.
He learned medicine from his grandfather and became known locally as Doctor Song. He also helped the yamen’s coroner examine bodies and maintained close ties with Sheng Nian and Constable Ling. Before entering an immortal sect, he and Sheng Nian killed a wicked martial artist who had massacred all 124 members of the Qingyuan Lin Clan 10 13.
After his grandfather’s death, Zhao Fengcheng brought him into the Dongyuan Sect. His early cultivation depended on refining entry-level pills and salvaging useful materials, including the damaged formation that enabled his first documented breakthrough 1 5 13.
Appearance
- Build and features: Tall and straight-backed, with a youthful, handsome face and a naturally distinguished bearing 300 409.
- Expression: Usually composed and gentle; advancing slaughter Sword Intent can make his expression cold and severe 409 695.
- Sword case: Carries a sword case on his back, an unusual enough sight to attract comments from Dongyuan disciples 149.
- Disguises: Uses a human-skin mask and later the Water-Mirror Headband to conceal or change his appearance 106 317.
Personality
Song Yan is kindhearted without being mild or passive. He detests wrongdoing and is willing to kill those who prey on others. His grandfather describes him as hating evil like a mortal enemy, but worries that his solitary courage and inflexibility will bring him hardship 10 629.
He remains approachable despite his growing status. He greets Shiliang’s townsfolk without an immortal’s airs, chats freely with unfamiliar Jun Mountain disciples, and repeatedly thinks of himself as an ordinary person rather than an exceptional genius 8 59 469.
His independence makes him resistant to factional patronage. He rejects the Qin Lineage’s support because its resources would carry obligations, and he prefers to settle his own grievances rather than rely on others to secure justice. This does not make him reckless: he withholds unverified accusations against Yang Wenxuan and refuses to gamble his life against a Nascent Soul cultivator merely for prestige 172 270 478.
He is diligent and adaptable in combat. He practices through missions, studies opponents’ methods, and deliberately removes his own advantages during difficult fights to refine his fundamentals. He also rejects prejudices about close combat, body cultivation, or ranged techniques 40 288 407.
Abilities & Skills
Sword Cultivation and Sword Control
- Sword-Controlling Technique: His principal early combat skill; develops through daily practice, sect missions, and battlefield experience 40 150.
- Sword Dao True Essence: A powerful killing method available to him during Qi Refining; later strengthens sword-finger attacks and his finishing strike against Zhang Xingming 105 385 529.
- Sword in the Clouds: Masters the technique during Qi Refining. He considers it versatile but conspicuous, lacking the precision needed for silent, instantaneous kills 48 102.
- Multiple flying swords: Controls two simultaneously at the Seventh Layer and later coordinates fifteen within a Sword Domain 144 385.
- Direct swordsmanship: Can fight with a flying sword in hand rather than controlling it remotely, using close combat to sharpen his technique 407.
Sword Intents
| Sword Intent | Applications and limitations |
|---|---|
| Flowers in the Mirror, Moon in the Water | Manipulates the distinction between truth and illusion. Can alter an affected opponent’s experience of battle and supports techniques such as Mirror Flower Shadow. Fundamentally relies on mental suppression and places heavy demands on Divine Sense 257 352 353 670. |
| Avīci Prison | His slaughter Sword Intent. Develops through Sword Dao illusion realms and later advances toward the Third Realm; rapid progress makes its killing intent difficult to restrain 488 695. |
| The Chivalrous Heroes’ Journey | An intent he finds easier to understand and develop than those requiring external assistance or extensive slaughter 690. |
- He possesses three Sword Intents at Golden Core formation and four by his later Eastern Sea cultivation 467 701.
- His understanding of Flowers in the Mirror, Moon in the Water deepens further after the battle with Jiang Jin 576.
Sword Formations and Heavenly Dao in Motion
- Spirit-Absorbing Sword Formation: Draws surrounding Spiritual Qi into his cultivation chamber to support breakthroughs and sustained cultivation 334 649.
- Fourteen Provinces Heaven-Crossing Sword Formation: Withstands Qu Yi’s initial flying-sword attack before being broken by his Immortal-Eating Bone intent 670.
- Sword Domain: Integrates flying swords, formations, Sword Intent, Xianxian, and Seeking Benevolence 385.
- Heavenly Dao in Motion: Provides displacement for evasion and traps opponents within his domain. Against Zhang Xingming, his technique renders the apparent destruction of the battlefield illusory and prevents the enemy’s intended mutual destruction 385 478 670.
Primordial Chaos Undivided
- Awakens during the battle with Qu Yi as a divine ability of the Myriad Manifestations of the Sword Dao 670.
- Restores Sword Intents consumed by Qu Yi’s Immortal-Eating Bone intent 670.
- Strips Qu Yi of his Sword Intent and divine abilities, leaving him to confront Song Yan without those advantages 670.
Six Void Heaven-Falling Sword Finger
| Form | Development and use |
|---|---|
| Shaochong Sword | Requires a year merely to begin learning and several more years to execute reliably. Reserved largely as a lethal trump card during Foundation Establishment 367 529. |
| Shaoshang Sword | Obtained from Senior Yuyan’s reborn flying sword. Song Yan grasps its essentials in three days; it is far more powerful than Shaochong and has no upper limit on the Sword Qi it can consume 529. |
Perception and Concealment
- Enhanced Divine Sense: Reaches approximately twenty zhang at Qi Refining Sixth Layer and more than thirty-five zhang after entering Late Qi Refining 102 107.
- Void-Viewing Sword Eye: Perceives Spiritual Qi movement and can silently entangle an opponent in a mirage-like illusion 280 300.
- Hidden Sword Spirit-Concealing Art: Suppresses his presence; he uses it to appear weakened after battle 121.
- Unexplained hearing: After three years of seclusion, begins hearing persistent whisper-like sounds. A dream connects this disturbance to his grandfather’s wish that he could see sin and hear evil deeds, but its precise nature remains unresolved 629.
Cultivation, Movement, and Physical Enhancement
- Purple Firmament Daoist Scripture: Cultivates and replenishes Sword Qi; contributes to his sustained output in prolonged combat 249 407.
- Purple Qi Void-Union True Art: Temporarily raises his cultivation and strength. Its exhaustion affects him less severely than its description suggests, for reasons he has not confirmed 280 670.
- Wandering the Great Void: Sword Dao escape technique used for long-distance travel and combat movement 349 448.
- Thunder Breath: Greatly improves his speed and apparent freedom of movement through space 448.
- Kunwu Remnant Flame: Tempers his body, broadens his meridians, increases vitality, protects against yin evils, and refines incoming Spiritual Power before its conversion to Sword Qi 465.
Dharma Aspects and Auxiliary Arts
- Great Radiance Dharma Aspect: Manifests a huge, powerful body capable of resisting Yang Wenxuan’s attack and crushing him. Controlling it burdens Song Yan’s Divine Sense 295 300 301.
- Void-Aspect Dharma Body: Handles purchases, sales, and miscellaneous work while Song Yan cultivates in seclusion 434.
- Turning Heaven and Earth: Enables his return from death during the Dragon Pool Mountain crisis 269 270 274.
- Cry Within the Case: Destroys a manifestation of evil karma, which he then absorbs into the Infinite Treasury 707.
- Sword Dao Alchemy: Produces relatively few pills but increasingly high-quality results. Refining difficult pills also trains the Sword Qi control needed for Core Formation 414 415.
- Medicine: Trained by his physician grandfather and treated townspeople before entering the sect 9 13.
Equipment & Items
- Infinite Treasury: A sword case with an internal realm. By spending Primordial Chaos Spiritual Objects, including Spirit Stones, Song Yan can revisit predecessors’ Sword Dao Illusion Realms to develop his own understanding 354 587 690.
- Two-Pole Bead: Provides the complete Five-Star Pulse Seizing Art after he severs his Spiritual Root and performs Opening the Mansion, Planting the Sword 102.
- Unmoored Boat: Flying sword initially refined as a mid-grade Law Artifact with room for further improvement. Later becomes an upper-grade artifact; he eventually gathers materials to raise its sword body to law-treasure grade 59 144 488.
- Joined Branches: Flying sword nurtured in his sword case; its connection with him and Qi signature gradually change 102.
- Seeking Benevolence: Law Treasure used as a central weapon in his Sword Domain and the killing strike against Zhang Xingming 385.
- Leaping Abyss: The name he gives his Fish-Dragon Bamboo Staff 488.
- Great Vow for All Under Heaven: Reborn flying sword carrying the thoughts of Yuyan and Tanshi; grants him the Shaoshang Sword inheritance 529.
- Sword Sect Jade Seal: Initially broken; repaired with Deng Ke’s assistance and returned before Song Yan leaves the Eastern Wilderness 499 529.
- Jade Bottle: Obtained from Ke Huai. Its withered branch gathers morning sun spirit to produce gold-green Nectar, which Song Yan tests in a medicinal bath 317.
- Water-Mirror Headband: Changes his appearance when visiting markets 317.
- Golden Core Sword Talisman: Acquired from the Rogue Cultivator of Xin Mountain’s spoils 354.

- Xiao He’s clay figurine: A figure made in his likeness and given to him before her departure for Between Mountains and Seas 337.
- Ancient Sword awaiting reforging: Entrusts Master Xu with twelve thunder-charged fushi-stone statues for the work, accepting that it may take decades 585.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Outer Sect and the Xuanyuan Conspiracy
Song Yan begins as a poorly resourced outer disciple making a living through pill refinement. A visit home reconnects him with his family and brings Xiao He into his cultivation life. He subsequently becomes a target of the Xuanyuan Sect’s Silent Valley scheme, survives its attempt to frame and eliminate rival disciples, and rebuilds after losing his cultivation 1 9 28 178.
Changping and Sword Intent
During the Changping conflicts, Song Yan survives the Hell Reflection by awakening Sword Intent. He emerges with a half-formed flying sword, rescues Xiao He from Dongzi, and kills Shen Huai despite Shen Yu’s warning. His actions make him widely discussed among Dongyuan disciples, sometimes as a supposed bloodthirsty killer 132 138.
Qin Lineage and the Demonic War
After rejecting Qin Lineage recruitment, Song Yan joins Lin Qing’s investigation into possible treachery. Lin Qing’s rebirth account gives him advance warning of the Demonic Path invasion, making rapid cultivation an urgent priority 172 192.
Following Foundation Establishment, he survives Xin Mountain’s attack, expels his Heart Demon, and returns to the sect to discover that Qin Xijun fought on his behalf. He later serves on the war’s front lines, kills Yang Wenxuan, and helps Sheng Nian overcome Xin Mountain 240 269 270 281 301 352 353.
The conflict culminates in his formation of a Sword Domain against Zhang Xingming. He prevents Zhang’s attempted Golden Core self-destruction and kills him before the surviving Dongyuan cultivators 385.
Central Region and Jun Mountain
Song Yan spends over thirty years in Luohou Abyss after traveling to the Central Region. He refines his swordsmanship and alchemy, forms a First-Rank Golden Core, and enters Li Li’s tutelage at Jun Mountain in accordance with Chen Linyuan’s last wishes 414 415 467 468 469 501.
Rather than remain safely at Jun Mountain, he volunteers for the Eastern Wilderness war. His conduct strengthens his reputation as True Person Ciyu, and he eventually leaves military service after accepting Fang Cunsheng as a Named Disciple 509 520 529.
Return to Chu
After more than forty years away, Song Yan returns as a Golden Core cultivator. He intervenes when Dongyuan faces disaster, kills the Nascent Soul cultivator Lü Ketai, and topples the Xuanyuan Sect. He then arranges for Sheng Yun to accompany him to the Central Region 530 536 538 544.
Eastern Sea, Captivity, and Nascent Soul Preparation
Completing the ancient Sea Chart turns Song Yan’s attention toward the Eastern Sea. There he operates publicly as the Worry-Relief Pavilion’s young master and continues developing his Sword Intents, eventually awakening Primordial Chaos Undivided against Qu Yi 585 595 670.
The Mirage Dragon’s control over his Sword Intent leaves him captive. Lingsi’s marriage proposal becomes part of an escape plan, while Divine Lord Yangsu comes to retrieve him. During the resulting crisis, Song Yan secretly destroys an evil-karma manifestation that intends to possess him 691 702 707 709.
After reaching Yang Valley, Qin Xijun’s Offering the Dao to Restore the True clears his remaining fixations and awakens his Primordial Spirit. He stays there to refine the cultivation needed for complete Nascent Soul formation 716 727.
