On the third day of the twelfth month, Chen Caozhi, Master Xu Zao, his sister-in-law Ding Youwei, and their party of over fifty left Wu County, taking a detour through Huating on their way back to Qiantang. Master Xu wanted to visit Feng Lingbo and her son in Qiantang. Xu Miao had already sent a letter saying he could not return from Jingzhou that year-
Lady Lu, Zhang Wenwan, Little Daofu, and Lu Weiwei traveled with them to Huating. Unable to refuse Lady Lu's warm hospitality, Chen Caozhi, his sister-in-law Ding Youwei, and the others stayed another two days in Huating before crossing the Songjiang on the sixth to return home. They agreed to meet in Huating on the sixteenth of the first month the following year and travel to Jiankang together.
Run'er took a great liking to the male and female white falcons perched on Huang Xiaotong's arm and asked what they were called.
Huang Xiaotong said, "I only call them Big White and Little White."
Run'er smiled and asked Chen Caozhi, "Uncle Chou, why haven't you given this pair of handsome birds some fine names?"
Chen Caozhi said, "I was leaving that to you, Run'er."
Delighted, Run'er rolled her lovely eyes and immediately said, "The male shall be called Reaching the Sky, from the line in Mao Poetry, 'Swift flies that falcon, its flight reaches the sky.' The female shall be called Whirling Upward, from Zhuangzi, 'Riding the whirlwind, it rises ninety thousand li.' What do you think, Uncle Chou?"
Chen Caozhi smiled. "Very good! Let Xiaotong train them well. From now on, these white falcons will be called Reaching the Sky and Whirling Upward."
Run'er's smile bloomed like a flower. All along the journey, she watched Huang Xiaotong train the falcons, releasing them and calling them back.
