Background / History
Family and Education
Xie Daoyun grew up among the scholarly elite of the Chen Commandery Xie Clan. Xie An raised and educated her, regularly including her when he tested the younger generation on their learning. Competition with her brothers and cousins helped develop her eloquence, discernment, and determination not to stand behind others 213 436.
Her childhood also included travel with Xie An and her elder brother Xie Jing. She remembered visiting her father in Yu Province at eleven, asking questions throughout the journey while both patiently answered her. Of seven siblings born to the same parents, only Daoyun and Xie Xuan survived to adulthood; her elder brothers Xie Quan and Xie Jing died before twenty 294 343 399.
Studies as Zhu Yingtai
Disguised as the young scholar Zhu Yingtai, Daoyun studied alongside Chen Caozhi in Wu Commandery. Xie Xuan used the accompanying identity Zhu Yingting. Chen recognized both identities by their meeting at Cao Maid Pavilion, although Daoyun continued presenting Xie An as a distant relative of the Zhu family 125 225.
Her concern for Chen extended beyond their shared studies. She arranged for Master Zhi Mindu to treat his mother and invited him to return after her recovery so they could make rubbings of the Cao’e Stele together. She also warned that gaining gentry status through Huan Wen’s patronage could bring opposition from other powerful clans 125 126.
Before her household moved to Jiankang, she visited Chen Family Cove for an overnight gathering of poetry, Go, and philosophical discussion. She and Xie Xuan defeated Chen Caozhi and Xu Miao in a debate concerning silence and knowledge 144.
Marriage Challenges and Wuyi Lane
Daoyun rejected Wang Ningzhi and Wang Huizhi as marriage prospects. Under an agreement with Xie An, only a man who surpassed her in Mysterious Debate and pure conversation could discuss marrying her. Over three years, more than twenty young men from ten eminent clans failed to meet that condition 170 178.
The Xie residence’s gatherings became increasingly famous. Daoyun and Xie Xuan initially debated together; after he entered the Western Headquarters, she continued facing challengers without losing her advantage. Despite her public success, she privately reread Chen Caozhi’s books and struggled with loneliness and her feelings for him 187.
At Mount Tianque, appearing as Zhu Yingtai, she impressed Wang Xizhi and other guests with poetry, her exposition of Free and Easy Wandering, and calligraphy. Afterward, she told her aunt Liu Dan that she intended to enter official service as Zhu Yingtai and confessed her longing for Chen Caozhi 223.
Service in the Western Headquarters
Xie Xuan opposed her appointment, fearing that discovery would damage her reputation and the family’s standing. Daoyun refused to withdraw and declared that remaining unmarried all her life would be acceptable. Xie Xuan then urged Chen Caozhi to marry her instead, but Chen maintained his promise to Lu Weiwei and described Daoyun as a close friend 236.
Xie An eventually approved her entry into the Western Headquarters and encouraged her to serve the court. On the journey to Gushu, she and Chen reviewed dozens of memorials, producing eleven proposals on merging offices and reducing posts and fifteen on the Great Tuduan. Huan Wen welcomed her and praised her Three Strategies for Restoration 266 270.
Although she served publicly as Zhu Yingtai, Huan Wen knew she was Xie An’s niece and privately admired her composure. He later took an interest in how far her official career might develop 270 332.
Tuduan and Drought Relief
As Chen Caozhi’s deputy commissioner for land registration, Daoyun accompanied him to Kuaiji and helped assess resistance from powerful clans and hidden households. They also worked to restore obstructed waterways around Jian Lake and secure local funding for waterworks 300 319 362.
When opponents sought to exploit irregularities in the Chen Clan’s landholdings, she investigated with assistance from Qiantang’s magistrate. She ordered the return of 160 mu to a tenant household, explicitly forbade retaliation against the tenant, and refused the clan’s farewell gifts after resolving the crisis 312 314.
During Chen Caozhi’s northern diplomatic mission, she sought Xi Chao’s help to prevent Lu Weiwei from being taken into the palace. She subsequently returned to Kuaiji for drought relief, determined to stop gentry landowners from using the disaster to annex land despite her limited authority as an eighth-rank official 361 362 378.
Exposure and Lung Illness
News that Zhu Yingtai was actually Xie Daoyun spread through Jiankang alongside rumors about her attachment to Chen Caozhi. Already weakened by coughing, she fainted at Chen Family Cove and feared that exposure would end her freedom to see him. She also recognized that the rumors could harm Lu Weiwei and create enemies for Chen 398 399.
Taoist Li Shouyi diagnosed her with consumptive exhaustion and privately considered it incurable. Xie An ordered her to resign and return to Jiankang, assuring her that he would handle the consequences rather than reproaching her 399.
Chen Caozhi later treated her consumptive lung disease and prescribed a year of careful nursing. During her recovery, he invited her to become his adviser, while she continued warning him about the political risks surrounding the Beifu Army 412. By their betrothal she was markedly improved, and before the wedding she appeared healthier than she had before falling ill 438 459.
Marriage and Later Life
Empress Dowager Chu summoned Daoyun and Lu Weiwei and bestowed both in marriage to Chen Caozhi. Using passages from Admonitions for Women, she designated Lu Weiwei the Left Wife and Daoyun the Right Wife. The three later completed their wedding bows and shared wedding wine together 436 465.
Daoyun continued participating in Chen’s public work after marriage. She remained secretly in Ye City after the rest of Xie Yan’s party departed, helping Chen govern while he recruited and trained Ji Province’s forces. She also became Murong Qinchen’s teacher 495 496.
By the later family journey to Qiantang, she had given birth to Xiao Feiyu. During the Qixi observances, she prayed for the child’s safe growth and distributed the offerings among the household’s maids, servants, and boatmen 506.
Appearance
- Build: Tall, slender, and graceful; even after gaining some weight during recovery, she remained elegantly proportioned 406 459.
- Face: An oval face, finely shaped, upward-slanting brows, and long, narrow phoenix eyes 310 459.
- Smile: Two conspicuous dimples, which she rarely revealed while studying in disguise 126 313.
- Male attire: Gauze caps or silk headcloths, wide-sleeved robes, and short jackets; she also used a strongly nasal Luoyang accent 144 225 234.
- Women’s attire: A high bun, sometimes with cicada-wing side locks, paired with a curved-hem jacket and skirt 214 438.
- Effects of illness: Severe weight loss and bloodless, bony hands contrasted with her formerly lustrous complexion and tapering fingers 406.
Personality
Daoyun is proud, competitive, and exacting. Her upbringing encouraged her to argue on equal terms with the men of her family, and she rarely softens a judgment merely to spare someone’s feelings. Her aloofness is not solely a consequence of her disguise: she is naturally selective in her company and uninterested in charming everyone around her 213 310 326.
Her independence is deliberate rather than impulsive. She insists on entering official service despite the threat to her marriage prospects, and she accepts the possibility of lifelong unmarried status rather than abandoning that choice 236.
Her feelings for Chen Caozhi expose a more vulnerable side. She sincerely wishes for his happiness with Lu Weiwei and rejects the idea of competing through jealousy, yet eventually admits to herself that “lifelong friendship” cannot fully explain her longing. After their betrothal, the otherwise decisive scholar becomes bashful about calling him her husband and worries over his feelings 330 362 405 439.

Historical Basis
- The supplementary account identifies the historical Xie Daoyun with the celebrated comparison of falling snow to willow fluff rising on the wind—the source of her “willow-catkin-chanting” reputation 2.
- That account describes her historical marriage to Wang Ningzhi. The novel explicitly marks its divergence from history: its Daoyun does not become Wang Ningzhi’s wife and instead later marries Chen Caozhi 2 222 465.
- The historical account’s stories of widowhood and resistance to Sun En belong to the supplementary biography, not to the novel events documented here 2.
