Admittedly, Azeroth's engineering closely resembled the advanced technology Dick had seen in his previous life. Using a special system of magic mixed with unconventional approaches to development, this world's master engineers had forcibly transformed a technological civilization into something that blended fantasy with steel. It was just as magnificent and wondrous, and even more awe-inspiring than the advanced technology Dick knew.
Mimiron before him, for instance, was a founding figure in Azeroth's engineering. With this fantastical style of engineering, he had built a flying machine that completely defied aerodynamics, a steel tank capable of independent thought, and an unmanned VX-001. Even his body was made entirely of steel, with cables and electrical currents wholly replacing flesh and blood.
It seemed utterly impossible, yet there it was.
But even though Dick was willing to acknowledge engineering's power, his critical eye told him that Azeroth's engineering still had a long way to go. Most of their creations, for instance, were crude and haphazard, full of wildly imaginative steampunk flavor without a trace of science fiction. More importantly, every master engineer in Azeroth, including Mekkatorque of Gnomeregan, the Goblin Tinker Garrivitz, and even Mimiron before him, had one major problem with their work!
They seemed to have no concept of protective casing at all. As long as an engineering creation could move and did not break down, that was enough. These were practically the bare minimum requirements. The trouble was, without protective casing around the parts most in need of defense, the most common outcome when facing a perceptive, explosive opponent was...
