This was the battlefield left after the endless assault of the Faceless Ones.
During the final frenzied assault, the spirits, mogu, and Guardians on Dick's side, who had already completely suppressed the Iron Burning Legion, had come under attack from the Faceless Ones inside Ulduar, almost caught between enemies on both sides. Had Eir, Ignis, and Auriaya not prepared their defenses beforehand, the entire battle line would have collapsed when the endless army of Faceless Ones struck.
Only when the army of Faceless Ones truly appeared did the mortal commanders stationed in the training grounds understand why Dick had assembled such an enormous force. It was not merely to deal with the Iron Burning Legion entrenched in Ulduar. On a deeper level, it was probably also to prepare for this very situation.
