Chapter Summaries

The Gotei 13’s main force arrived at Wahrwelt and split up to search the fortress. Sajin Komamura fought Bambietta Basterbine, revealed that he had learned the Humanization Technique at a terrible price, and unleashed his Bankai as her Reishi Bombs rained down.

• Sōya Azashiro warned Sōsuke Aizen that he would stop him if he tried to bring Wahrwelt down on Seireitei, and Aizen said he looked forward to it.
• Shunsui Kyōraku divided the Gotei 13 into search parties, and Sajin Komamura, Tetsuzaemon Iba, and Gin Ichimaru encountered Bambietta Basterbine and her four companions.
• Gin Ichimaru drove Bambietta’s companions away with Shinsō, while Komamura engaged Bambietta and battled her explosive Reishi attacks.
• An explosion shattered Komamura’s mask, revealing his human face; he told Iba he had learned the Humanization Technique from his grandfather and that it came at a price.
• Bambietta launched a barrage of Reishi Bombs, and Komamura answered by releasing Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō Dangai Jōe.

Sajin Komamura defeated Bambietta with his armorless Bankai, but the Humanization Technique’s price transformed him into a mindless wolf. Tetsuzaemon Iba found him and carried him away.

• Sajin Komamura endured Bambietta’s explosions as his armorless Myō'ō healed alongside him.
• Bambietta entered Vollständig and unleashed a stronger barrage, but Komamura’s Myō'ō cleaved through the blasts and wounded her.
• Bambietta fell into the rubble, and Komamura turned toward the central tower to continue pursuing Yhwach.
• The Humanization Technique’s cost took effect, changing Komamura into a wolf and erasing his human reason.
• Tetsuzaemon Iba found the transformed Komamura, picked him up, and told him he had done more than enough.

Gin Ichimaru fought Candice Catnipp, Meninas McAllon, and Liltotto, wounding all three despite their Vollständig. Giselle Gewelle turned the unconscious Bambi into a zombie, and the Quincy girls retreated as Gin headed to check on Sajin Komamura.

• Gin Ichimaru used Shinsō to counter Candice Catnipp’s lightning and wound her as Meninas McAllon and Liltotto joined the attack.
• Candice and Meninas activated Vollständig, but Gin dodged their attacks and wounded Meninas and Liltotto.
• Giselle Gewelle injected her blood into the unconscious Bambi, turning her into a zombie under Giselle’s control.
• Liltotto called off the fight, and the Quincy girls fled with Giselle and zombie Bambi.

Gin Ichimaru left Tetsuzaemon Iba to find shelter and searched Wahrwelt for Rangiku Matsumoto, who was being overwhelmed by Cang Du. As Cang Du prepared to kill her, Gin’s voice called out his Bankai.

• Gin Ichimaru saw that Sajin Komamura had become a mindless wolf and told Tetsuzaemon Iba to hide from the falling stones.
• Gin Ichimaru hurried away to search Wahrwelt for Rangiku Matsumoto, fearing she could not defeat a Sternritter alone.
• Rangiku attacked Cang Du with Haineko and Kidō, but his Iron ability shrugged off her strikes and broke her bindings.
• Cang Du punched Rangiku into a tower wall, buried her beneath rubble, and raised a Reishi blade to kill her.
• As Rangiku closed her eyes, Gin Ichimaru announced, "Bankai, Kamishini no Yari."

Gin Ichimaru rescued the badly injured Rangiku by defeating Cang Du and killing him with Kamishini no Yari. He then returned to Rangiku, who was still barely able to stand.

• Gin Ichimaru appeared as Cang Du was about to strike Rangiku and pierced Cang Du through the chest.
• Gin Ichimaru shot through Cang Du’s shoulder and kneecap, leaving him kneeling and unable to fight effectively.
• Gin Ichimaru wounded Cang Du repeatedly, disabling his healing and preventing him from using Vollständig.
• Cang Du admitted that his defeat proved he was weak, and Gin Ichimaru killed him with a thrust through the throat.
• Gin Ichimaru went to check on Rangiku and remarked that she looked like a mess.

Gin Ichimaru found Rangiku Matsumoto badly wounded after her fight with Cang Du and insisted she stop fighting. Rangiku promised to seek medical care while Gin left to help other Soul Reapers battling in Wahrwelt.

• Gin Ichimaru found Rangiku Matsumoto injured and told her she had lost the ability to fight.
• Rangiku resisted, insisting she could still support the Gotei 13 with low-level Kidō.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya encountered the Bambi squad and fought the four Quincy girls with Hyōrinmaru. After his Shikai proved insufficient against their combined attacks, he released his Bankai.

• Tōshirō Hitsugaya found the Bambi squad while trying to regroup with the other captains, and Candice Catnipp attacked him.
• Tōshirō used Hyōrinmaru's Shikai to freeze Candice Catnipp's lightning and Meninas McAllon's attack, but Liltotto ate his ice and Giselle Gewelle sent the zombie Bambietta after him.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya fought Candice Catnipp, Meninas McAllon, Liltotto, and Giselle Gewelle, but Meninas knocked him unconscious and Giselle turned him into a zombie. Meanwhile, Yachiru Kusajishi got separated from Kenpachi Zaraki in Wahrwelt and entered a room where Gěnà'ěr Lǐ Xiéqiào was waiting.

• Tōshirō released Daiguren Hyōrinmaru and attacked the four girls, while Candice and Meninas activated their Vollständig.
• Candice, Meninas, and zombified Bambietta forced Tōshirō to expend his strength as he dodged attacks and countered with ice.
• Candice's lightning attack nearly exhausted Tōshirō, and Meninas struck his back, sending him crashing into a ruined house unconscious.
• Giselle poured her blood into Tōshirō's wounds and turned him into a lifeless, Captain-level zombie.

Yachiru Kusajishi defeated Guenael Lee, only to be overwhelmed by Gremmy’s reality-altering power. Kenpachi Zaraki arrived and split the rubble pinning her down.

• Yachiru Kusajishi wandered into a room and encountered Guenael Lee, who vanished using his ability to erase his presence.
• Yachiru sensed Guenael’s position and wounded him, then summoned Three-Step Sword Beast and killed him with a chain of slashes.
• Gremmy revealed that Guenael was an imagined creation and used The Visionary to make Yachiru’s bones brittle and open a pit beneath her.
• Gremmy dropped a massive chunk of building onto Yachiru, trapping her beneath the rubble and leaving her barely conscious.
• Kenpachi Zaraki split the stone pinning Yachiru and found her in the pit.

Kenpachi Zaraki fought Gremmy, overcame his imagined weakness, and was brought to the brink of death when Gremmy made his organs fail. As Kenpachi heard Nozarashi’s voice for the first time, he stood and released his Zanpakuto.

• Kenpachi Zaraki leapt from the pit and shattered Gremmy’s steel defenses and floating table with a single slash.
• Gremmy used The Visionary to weaken Kenpachi, but Kenpachi’s Reiatsu overcame the effect.
• Gremmy imagined Kenpachi’s organs failing, causing him to cough blood and collapse toward death.
• Kenpachi heard Nozarashi speak to him for the first time and learned the spirit’s name.
• Kenpachi stood, raised his Zanpakuto, and shouted, “Devour, Nozarashi!”

Kenpachi Zaraki defeated Gremmy after surviving his imagined disasters and overpowering Gremmy’s attempt to copy his strength. He destroyed Gremmy’s true brain, then searched the crater for Yachiru, who did not answer.

• Kenpachi released Nozarashi, overcame his illness, and split Gremmy’s enormous meteor with a single slash.
• Kenpachi charged through Gremmy’s imagined weapons and obstacles, cutting them all apart.
• Gremmy imagined himself with Kenpachi’s strength, but his body could not withstand the power and burst apart.
• Kenpachi cleaved the nutrient tank and the brain inside it, ending the battle.
• Kenpachi returned to the crater and called for Yachiru, but received no reply.

Kenpachi searched the crater where the pink-haired girl had vanished and found only the clothes of an 11th Division lieutenant. Elsewhere in Wahrwelt, Mayuri and Nemu fought Pernida, whose evolving nerve tendrils overwhelmed the battlefield and cost Nemu her left arm.

• Kenpachi searched the crater but found only a folded Shihakushō with an 11th Division lieutenant's armband, then left to look for another opponent.
• Mayuri and Nemu confronted Pernida, the Sternritter whose true form was the Soul King's Left Hand.
• Mayuri's anesthetic briefly stalled Pernida's nerve tendrils, but Pernida rapidly evolved resistance and its severed tendrils produced new eyes, mouths, and corrosive acid.
• Pernida filled the battlefield with tendrils and trapped Mayuri in midair, so Nemu disobeyed his order and threw him toward an opening.
• Mayuri cut off Nemu's left arm when it began mutating, and the arm burst apart under Pernida's power.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi fought Pernida with a specially designed Bankai creature, but Pernida adapted and destroyed it before closing in on Mayuri. Yamamoto’s flames then swept in to burn away the encroaching nerve tentacles.

• Mayuri Kurotsuchi struck Nemu for acting without permission and scolded her over her damaged body.
• Pernida activated Vollständig, transforming its nerve strands into enormous tentacles that attacked Mayuri and Nemu.
• Mayuri summoned Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo, Matai Fukuin Shōtai, which produced an armored new Jizo designed to resist Pernida’s nerve interference.
• Pernida adapted to the new Jizo, causing it to burst apart and turning Matai Fukuin Shōtai’s body against Mayuri.
• Mayuri destroyed his Bankai, but Pernida surrounded him with a rapidly tightening net of nerve tentacles.
• Yamamoto called out “Flame-Scorched Rampart,” and towering flames burned away the tentacles around Mayuri.

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto and Mayuri Kurotsuchi fought Pernida, whose evolutionary abilities let it adapt to Yamamoto’s flames. Mayuri injected a drug that sent Pernida’s growth out of control, leaving its body collapsing as it demanded to know what he had done.

• Yamamoto burned away Pernida’s tendrils and dismissed Mayuri’s complaint that the creature had been his specimen.
• Pernida declared its loyalty to Yhwach and attacked Yamamoto with a vast net of Reishi spears, which Yamamoto destroyed with Nadegiri.
• Yamamoto engulfed Pernida in a fire tornado with Torch, but Pernida evolved heat-resistant armor and vents to withstand the flames.
• Mayuri injected a drug into one of Pernida’s nerves while its attention was fixed on Yamamoto.
• The drug caused Pernida’s body to proliferate uncontrollably, and Mayuri revealed that it accelerated the creature’s evolution.

After Pernida’s defeat, Aizen decided to leave his post beneath Wahrwelt and join the battle above. Sōya Azashiro failed to stop him and followed through the portal to keep him in sight.

• Pernida’s enormous hand disintegrated under Yamamoto and Mayuri’s combined assault, restoring the view beneath Wahrwelt.
• Aizen watched the fortress from the ruins while Sōya Azashiro guarded him and Urozakuro complained.
• Aizen stood and announced he would visit Wahrwelt, but Azashiro warned that Kyōraku had ordered him to keep Aizen there.
• Aizen opened a passage to Wahrwelt and overwhelmed Azashiro’s attempt to slash him with a surge of Reiatsu.
• Aizen entered the portal, and Azashiro followed just before it closed.

Askin poisoned Ichigo and Gin while evading their attacks, but Yoruichi cornered him and overwhelmed him with Hakuda. Yushiro intervened to face Askin himself, activating Shunkō as Yoruichi watched.

• Askin poisoned Ichigo with toxins in the air and prepared to kill him, but Gin struck him and forced him to flee.
• Gin pursued Askin until he realized he had been poisoned and stopped to fight the toxin with his spiritual power.
• Yoruichi intercepted Askin and attacked him with a barrage of Hakuda strikes, breaking through his toxin defenses.
• Yushiro arrived and told Yoruichi he wanted to prove himself as head of the Shihōin Clan.
• Yushiro blocked Askin's escape and activated Shunkō, Bakuen Musō.

Yūshirō used the Shihoin family’s Raijin Battle Form to overwhelm Askin, but Askin adapted to his Reiatsu and poisoned him with his own spiritual power. Yoruichi rescued her unconscious brother and prepared to fight Askin with her Raijin Battle Form.

• Yūshirō unleashed his Raijin Battle Form and battered Askin with a series of fiery attacks.
• Askin caught Yūshirō’s burning fist and explained that he had adapted to Yūshirō’s Reiatsu, making it toxic to Yūshirō himself.
• Yūshirō collapsed from the poison, and Askin kicked him before attempting to stab him with a Reishi blade.
• Yoruichi rescued her unconscious brother and confronted Askin for injuring the head of the Shihoin family.
• Yoruichi began gathering lightning-attribute Reishi as she prepared to use Shunkō: Raijin Battle Form.

Yoruichi unleashed her thunder-powered form and battered Askin until he appeared defeated, but he used the prolonged fight to analyze her lightning and poison her. Askin became immune to her attacks, leaving Yoruichi weakened and unable to use her Reiatsu without worsening the poison.

• Yoruichi transformed into her thunder-powered form and struck Askin with a rapid series of devastating Hakuda attacks.
• Askin endured Yoruichi's assault and stopped her final punch by touching her fist, causing her lightning to dissipate.
• Yoruichi discovered that Askin's poison was spreading through her arm and lungs, and she retreated after cutting off the affected nerve impulses.
• Askin explained that he had analyzed her lightning, become immune to it, and altered her immune system so using her Reiatsu would intensify the poison.
• Askin sat down and taunted Yoruichi while she knelt, weakened by the poison.

Kisuke Urahara arrived as Yoruichi struggled against Askin and urged her to unleash her Black Cat Battle Princess form. Yoruichi defeated Askin but lost control of her instincts, leaving Urahara to draw her out of the form with a cat teaser.

• Kisuke Urahara arrived and provoked Yoruichi into using the form she had refused to unleash.
• Yoruichi transformed into her Black Cat Battle Princess form, and her rapidly shifting Reiatsu overcame Askin's poison and analysis.
• Yoruichi battered Askin through the ruins and kicked him through multiple walls, leaving him buried and motionless.
• Kisuke Urahara used a cat teaser to lure Yoruichi out of the form, and she pounced on him and licked his face.

Kisuke Urahara faced Askin after Yoruichi collapsed from the effects of her berserk form. Askin unleashed his Vollständig and destroyed Urahara’s eyes, but Urahara adapted and began releasing his Bankai.

• Yoruichi fell into a deep sleep after exhausting her Reiatsu, and Urahara laid her on a stone slab.
• Askin emerged in a poison-woven suit of armor and revealed that his Vollständig let him alter the life-taking limits of substances he had tasted.
