Power Progression
Darean’s documented progression consists of spell unlocks, improved magical control, and expanded reserves rather than named cultivation realms.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Force of Sharpness unlocked | 2 | Touching an arrow symbol in the Book of Strange Script grants knowledge of weapon-piercing magic. He initially has no mana with which to use it. |
| Magical perception manifests | 4 | Begins seeing magical energy around him, but cannot yet control it reliably. |
| First successful combat spell | 5 6 | Channels magic into his sword and destroys six pirates’ spearheads in one stroke. His reserves sustain the enchantment only briefly. |
| Garth Greenhand’s Gift unlocked | 7 | The book’s second section reveals a green-hand symbol, granting a touch-based plant-growth spell. |
| Foreign magical binding overcome | 13 | Uses Garth Greenhand’s Gift to break the ancient magic preventing a Valyrian Purple Queen seed from sprouting, nearly exhausting his stored mana. |
| Armor-piercing application demonstrated | 17 | Cuts through Aemon Cuy’s armor with an enchanted strike. Excessive mana expenditure leaves him barely able to stand. |
| Magical reservoir expands | 29 | A shipment of 100,000 jin of food completes the third section’s grain objective. Ambient magic condenses and enters his body, rapidly enlarging his internal reserves. |
Background
Darean is a transmigrator who inherited Dareon Hightower’s memories and considers himself, in a sense, the same person. His memories include knowledge of coming political upheavals and events involving the royal family, dragons, and the conflict in the North 1 33.
At fourteen, the original Dareon secretly boarded a ship bound for Sunspear. Leyton had him brought back, and the return voyage encountered pirates attacking a merchant vessel. Dareon boarded the ship and rescued Marwyn, who had been wounded by an arrow. Their resulting friendship gave him free access to the scholar’s study over the following two years 11.
Leyton’s withdrawal into magical research with his eldest daughter Moroa left his sons competing over the family’s affairs. Darean became caught in those struggles and was sent to Sunflower Hall under the pretext of gaining experience. Its lord, Brandon Cuy, had already aligned himself with another faction and treated him with open hostility 1.
Shortly before his introduction, Darean was knighted and granted a holding carved out of Sunflower Hall’s lands. He accepted the departure despite Clyson’s objections, preferring the opportunity to establish his own home to remaining under Cuy’s authority 1.
Appearance
- Youthful face, with soft facial stubble beginning to grow 1 10.
- Ash-gray cloak embroidered with House Hightower’s stepped white tower and burning beacon 1.
- Armored riding equipment, including a steel gauntlet and, during formal combat, a shield bearing a white tower on a gray field 1 16.
Personality
Darean is pragmatic about both survival and government. He initially protects his settlers partly because their labor is indispensable to his fledgling holding. Nevertheless, he promises them protection, land, and freedom from taxation until they have built a viable home. He also insists that food, timber, and nails matter less than the people using them 2 3 8.
He favors workable solutions over aristocratic appearances. Rather than attempting unaffordable stone defenses, he begins with timber and mud, rewards productive labor, and later abandons rationing when it undermines motivation. He accepts Marwyn’s criticism that he lacks skill in internal administration 8 19 22.
His confidence is often deliberate theater. He maintains a reputation as a martial simpleton because others become less guarded around him, while privately assessing their motives. Against stronger opponents, he waits for openings instead of allowing knightly pride to dictate his actions 17 25.
Darean can be ruthless toward perceived threats. After defeating the pirates, he has the prisoners executed at his fallen guard’s grave rather than risk keeping dangerous men in his settlement. By contrast, he spares Aemon Cuy partly because killing a member of House Cuy would create political trouble 7 17.
Abilities & Skills
Force of Sharpness
A spell that channels mana into a weapon to increase its armor-piercing and penetrating power 2.
- Its effectiveness increases with the amount of mana expended 2.
- His first successful use destroys six spearheads and cuts through their fire-hardened wooden shafts 5.
- It later allows him to slice through Aemon Cuy’s armor 17.
- Low reserves initially restrict it to a momentary burst; overuse causes severe exhaustion 6 17.
Garth Greenhand’s Gift
A spell that gathers mana in the palm and accelerates the growth of plants he touches 7.
- Growth speed depends on magical output 7.
- Early testing advances a bean seedling’s growth by less than half a day 8.
- It breaks the foreign magic binding the Valyrian Purple Queen seed, which then painfully roots into his palm 13.
- His early reserves are insufficient to sustain the settlement’s food supply, even though he can affect a small patch of land 19.
Magical Perception
Darean can see ambient magical energy and detect magic in people and objects 4 10.
- Recognizes that Oldtown has a denser magical atmosphere than his own holding 10.
- Distinguishes the Faith of the Seven’s magic from the volatile magic surrounding the Valyrian seed 13.
- Detects stable magical traces in septons and septas and sees magic swirling through blessed water 32 33.
- These observations challenge his earlier belief that the Seven are merely instruments of religious and political control; they do not establish the gods’ nature with certainty 10 34.
Martial Training
Darean inherits a body trained extensively in swordsmanship, archery, and riding 5.
- Cocks and fires a hand crossbow while mounted 5.
- Uses a sword, dagger, and thrown spear during the pirate battle 6.
- Defeats the pirate leader by feigning weakness in a sword bind and stabbing his throat with his free hand 6.
- Trains Edmont and nine other villagers with wooden swords 21.
- Initially lacks the mounted combat experience of Aemon Cuy, whose superior timing forces him onto the defensive 16.
Foreknowledge and Political Analysis
His memories give him advance knowledge of events he expects to unfold, but not a complete explanation of the changes occurring around him 1 33.
- Plans military expansion in anticipation of the War of the Five Kings 22.
- Recognizes the strategic conflict between his proposed harbor and House Redwyne’s control of maritime trade 22.
- Argues that Mace Tyrell could serve Robert as Hand by supplying wealth, food, and soldiers 43.
- Is surprised by magical activity among the Faith before Daenerys’s expected dragon-hatching, forcing him to reconsider his assumptions 33.
Equipment & Items
- Book of Strange Script — A gift delivered from Leyton, written in a script only Darean can understand. Its pages reveal tasks and spell symbols as he progresses. Listed rewards include accelerating the Magic Tide, reducing the final White Frost’s intensity, and increasing mana concentration 1 2 7.
- Its third section requires 25,000 jin of grain and displays an initially locked stone symbol whose function is not explained in the supplied account 20.
- Its fourth section concerns cleansing Oldtown’s corruption and displays three locked symbols: an eye, an hourglass, and what Darean interprets as a thermometer 48.
- Longsword/bastard sword — Bears the White Tower emblem and serves as the focus for Force of Sharpness 5.
- Dagger — Carried at his waist; used to kill the pirate leader 6.
- Hand crossbow — Carried in his saddlebag and discarded during the pirate battle when he lacks time to reload 5.
- Armor and shield — Includes full plate, emergency leather armor, and a shield displaying Hightower heraldry 4 16.
- Big Black — His black warhorse, acquired through trade with Essos 1 40.
- Ravens — Supplied by Baelor to establish direct communication with the Hightower 21.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing the Holding
Darean arrives to find his holding’s only village burned and its inhabitants killed. The subsequent night raid reveals a deliberate effort to isolate and murder him: the Dornish attackers have been offered 800 gold dragons for his death. His first successful combat spell helps break their attack, but the identity of whoever commissioned it remains unresolved 2 3 5 7.
He begins rebuilding with a two-story wooden residence and a log-and-mud defensive wall. Food, housing, sanitation, medicine, and water dominate his early decisions. After recruiting Marwyn, he provides space for medicine-making, orders a search for a well site, and permits local trade to replace an increasingly ineffective rationing system 8 19.
Recruiting Marwyn and Defeating Aemon Cuy
Darean visits the Citadel seeking a capable maester and instead tries to recruit Marwyn himself. He wins their wager by making the Valyrian Purple Queen seed sprout through magic 11 12 13 14.
Before he can leave Oldtown, Humfrey and Garth’s guards attempt to bring him back. Aemon Cuy accepts a duel in Humfrey’s place and repeatedly targets weaknesses in Darean’s armor. Darean waits until Aemon tires and exposes himself, then cuts through his armor with Force of Sharpness. He spares the defeated knight and departs with Marwyn 15 16 17.
Hightower Expansion on the Straits
An exposed iron vein gives the holding a valuable resource, which Darean initially orders kept secret. Meanwhile, his family offers aid for reasons extending beyond his personal success: Baelor explains that the proposed castle and harbor are intended to challenge Redwyne tolls and strengthen Hightower influence over the straits 21 23 24.
Darean worries that accepting large numbers of family personnel will leave him lord in name only. Nevertheless, he secures substantial support, including a commitment of five hundred guards, construction materials, craftsmen, surveyors, and grain. Leyton’s steward assumes oversight of construction, while Darean orders granaries prepared before the workforce arrives 22 26 27.
New soldiers, ironworking, and a newly discovered quarry accelerate development. Darean envisages a defensive garrison whose walls can eventually encompass a harbor. At the foundation ceremony, he leads the settlers in an oath to defend the new castle as faint ripples form in the surrounding magic 30 32 35.
Margaery’s Visit
Margaery’s visit combines a family connection with Tyrell scrutiny of the new settlement. Baelor instructs Darean to entertain her while limiting what she sees. Darean shows her the walls and introduces her to Marwyn, but remains conscious that their surnames represent different political interests 37 38 40.
Their political discussion becomes contentious when Darean proposes that Mace become Hand and Margaery marry Joffrey. She angrily demands that he retract the suggestion 43.
The Oldtown Crisis
Baelor warns Darean not to obey Leyton’s summons after disturbing events at the Hightower. Darean chooses to trust Baelor pending a direct order from his father and consults Marwyn and the steward about construction, troop deployment, and contact with neighboring lords 45.
As the crisis worsens, Darean sends Clyson and twenty men to investigate. Baelor reports uncontrolled troops, Garth’s grave injuries, and attackers identifiable by black, bloodshot pupils. The Book of Strange Script assigns Darean a task connected to cleansing Oldtown’s corruption 48.
Although he now commands roughly a thousand elite troops, Darean seeks additional support. He leaves Gerold to defend New Land Town, places the protesting Margaery under guard, and rides to Three Towers with two hundred men. There, he requests a private, urgent meeting with Earl Tommen Costayne 50.
Relationships
- Leyton Hightower — Father and head of the house. Darean has little personal affection for him, but receives the mysterious book and later extensive development aid through his authority. The subsequent summons to the Hightower becomes a source of alarm 1 27 37 45.
- Baelor Hightower — Eldest brother and principal family ally. Provides Darean’s original guards, coordinates assistance, and warns him about the Hightower crisis 4 24 37 45.
- Clyson Hightower — Guard captain, cadet-branch relative, and de facto protector. Loyal and capable in combat, though Darean finds his political judgment limited 1 7.
- Archmaester Marwyn — Long-standing friend, rescued by Dareon at fourteen; later his maester and adviser. Darean’s magical demonstration persuades him to leave the Citadel 11 13 14 19.
- Garth Hightower — Second brother and factional rival. Tries to compromise Darean’s relationship with Baelor, but ultimately supplies materials under supervision 15 17 27.
- Guncer Hightower — Third brother. Despite mutual suspicion and barbed exchanges, he unexpectedly advocates a substantial military commitment to Darean’s holding 25 26.
- Humfrey Hightower — Fourth brother and Garth’s ally. Attempts to block Darean’s departure from Oldtown but lets Aemon fight in his place 15 16.
- Gerold Hightower / “Uncle Jeylo” — Senior military relative who favors Darean’s martial interests. Leads reinforcements to the holding and later remains responsible for its defense 30 31 50.
- Margaery Tyrell — Niece through Darean’s sister Alerie, despite being his own age. Their family connection does not remove his distrust of Tyrell political intentions 37 38 40.
- Brandon Cuy — Hostile lord of Sunflower Hall, from whose territory Darean’s holding is carved. Darean obtains initial supplies from him but expects no dependable support 1 8 19.
- Aemon Cuy — Duel opponent whom Darean suspects of trying to cripple him. Darean defeats him but spares his life for political reasons 16 17.
- Edmont — One of Darean’s swordsmanship pupils and the most dedicated member of the initial ten-man village training group 21.
