Background / History

Xiao Jiu binds to Gu Zhiyue while he is recovering in the hospital from superficial injuries sustained in a fall. Its first announcement identifies it as System No. 9, although Gu Zhiyue cannot see anyone speaking. After confirming its assignment with the Main System, it announces that its mission is to save the Gu family 3.

It asks Gu Zhiyue to call it “Xiao Jiu” and explains that the family’s downfall will result from coordinated attacks by rivals aided by traitors within the household and company. Rather than treating that future as unavoidable, Xiao Jiu emphasizes that the family is still at its strongest and can survive by identifying threats and cutting its losses early 4.

Xiao Jiu is chatty, theatrical, and enthusiastic about gossip. It initially draws out its explanation of the Gu family’s future until Gu Zhiyue threatens to make it find another host. It later admits that it can barely contain its desire to share fresh gossip and eagerly directs him toward scandals as they unfold 4 17 29.

Its rapport with Gu Zhiyue includes sarcasm and frequent teasing, particularly about his attraction to handsome men. Beneath the banter, it takes its protective assignment seriously: it reminds him of approaching dangers, gathers evidence, and suggests defending innocent fans caught in Gu Shen Ci’s controversy 9 11 19 28 36.

Xiao Jiu is curious about human experiences but does not understand all of them. It defers to romance systems on romantic behavior and cites the Main System when explaining human small talk.
