Inside the conservatory, Liu Muyan stood with her arms crossed, staring coldly at Chu Yannan.
Even now, thinking about what Chu Yannan had said made her angry. What did he mean, he would never like Liu Muyan? Who cared?
She had no interest in that immature brat either. He was already twenty, yet he still acted like a three-year-old, completely unable to control his temper.
If she really let their engagement go through, her whole life would be ruined.
Before Liu Muyan could speak, Chu Yannan lost his patience. Being scolded earlier had filled him with anger.
"Liu Muyan, I meant everything I said earlier. I won't get engaged to you. Don't even think about it."
Liu Muyan sneered at his words and gestured for him to continue. Chu Yannan spoke again.
"I already have someone I like. I don't want our families tying us together anymore.
"That was all childhood stuff. None of it counts. Muyan, if you have any heart at all, tell my parents and the others.
"I only see you as a little sister. Can't we just be brother and sister for the rest of our lives? Why do we have to be together? We won't be happy like this.
"Besides, you don't really like me either, do you? You've just mistaken companionship for love. Once you meet someone you like, you'll realize none of this was real."
Liu Muyan could only laugh at how childish and naive he was.
How could she not know what it meant to like someone? It just wasn't Chu Yannan she liked. She had only attended tonight's dinner because she had another purpose.
Now she hadn't seen the person she wanted to see, and she'd had to listen to all this rotten nonsense.
And he wanted her to bring it up herself? If Chu Yannan hadn't insisted on making her his wife when they were little, would she have ended up in an arranged childhood engagement? She hadn't even liked him back then.
There was no reason she would like him now that she was older. If she hadn't been too young to speak properly back then, she would have torn him a new one.
What kind of toad are you, thinking you can marry me? If it weren't for, if it weren't for... She looked at Chu Yannan. His brow and eyes bore some resemblance to that person's.
Otherwise, she would have pinned him down and buried him in the dirt in a heartbeat.
"Finished?" Liu Muyan asked.
Chu Yannan said hesitantly, "I don't want to put it so harshly, but I don't want my life controlled either."
Liu Muyan smiled, an exceptionally radiant smile, then slapped Chu Yannan right across the face. Caught completely off guard, his head snapped to the side.
He covered his cheek, still somewhat unable to believe it.
He looked up at Liu Muyan with wide eyes, his voice rising. "You hit me?"
Liu Muyan nodded. "Yes. So what if I hit you? Do I need to check the time and weather first? Isn't hitting you perfectly normal?"
Chu Yannan pointed at her. "What gives you the right to hit me? Is this because you can't have the man you love? Liu Muyan, I never thought you were this kind of person. I won't submit to you!"
Fuck. Liu Muyan was so angry she laughed. Irritated, she said,
"How many dads do you have feeding you at every meal to make you this cocky? Your cards have been frozen, and you're still yapping away here. Just thinking about your brother working his ass off to earn money for someone like you to spend pisses me the fuck off.
"Chu Yannan, have I been too fucking nice to you?"
Yet after his initial shock at her transformation, Chu Yannan's expression became hard to describe. Once Liu Muyan finished, he spoke in a low voice.
"Mu Mu, even though we have no chance together, you can't go to such extremes. Even if you try a different way of attracting me, I still won't fall in love with you, no matter what. Give up. I really do have someone I like!"
"Fuck!" Liu Muyan was genuinely furious. What the hell went on in this idiot's head? How could he dream up something this ridiculous?
Couldn't he see she was practically stabbing him to death with her eyes? Did he think she was making eyes at him?
She took several deep breaths. When she looked up again, she caught sight of a figure drawing closer. She seemed somewhat incredulous, then her eyes shifted, and she stopped scolding Chu Yannan.
"I'm sorry I got you scolded earlier. I understand what you mean. I'll explain everything to my parents and the others. I won't drag you into anything again."
She bit her lip, her eyes already misting over as she spoke pitifully.
Anyone who saw her would think the person opposite her had gone too far.
Chu Yannan was startled. She had just slapped him, so why was she acting helpless now? Wait, no. He hadn't done anything. Had what he said earlier been too harsh?
"Chu Yannan, what are you doing?" A clear, mellow, low voice rang out, carrying a trace of anger and displeasure at Chu Yannan for upsetting someone.
Chu Yannan turned around and saw his older brother standing outside the conservatory. Somewhat shocked, he said,
"Brother, why are you back?"
Liu Muyan turned to look. Outside the conservatory stood Chu Yanqing in a suit, his frame very tall.
He wore gold-rimmed glasses on his handsome, refined face, and his brow and eyes bore some resemblance to Chu Yannan's. This was Chu Yannan's older brother, Chu Yanqing.
He frowned slightly at Chu Yannan in displeasure, seemingly waiting for an explanation.
Chu Yannan pushed the door open and replied,
"Brother, I was talking to Muyan. But why are you back?"
Liu Muyan took the opportunity to step outside and greet Chu Yanqing.
"Hello, Yannan's big brother."
Chu Yanqing nodded, then looked at Chu Yannan again and said,
"If you were just talking, why is Mu Mu crying? What have you done this time? Can't you act more sensibly?"
Chu Yannan couldn't defend himself. Besides, Liu Muyan's eyes really were misty now. Who would believe him if he said he hadn't bullied her?
Chu Yannan said, "I didn't. We were just talking about a few things. Brother, have you eaten, coming back so late? Should we ask the housekeeper to make something else? Mom and Dad will be thrilled when they find out you're back. Let's talk inside."
Liu Muyan stood to one side, watching Chu Yanqing and Chu Yannan talk. She was very quiet, silently staring at the paving stones as she waited for them to finish.
When she heard Chu Yannan suggest going inside, she raised her head, glanced at Chu Yanqing, and said,
"Yan Qing, you should go inside and eat first. Yannan and I were just fooling around earlier. I have something to do, so I'll head home. You two go inside."
She didn't linger. Turning around, she left the Chu Family's villa and returned to the Liu Family home.
As soon as she entered, she saw Lan Fei and Father Liu still watching television. After scolding Chu Yannan earlier, they hadn't stayed long and had come home first.
Liu Muyan, meanwhile, had found an excuse to stay so she could give Chu Yannan a piece of her mind.
As she entered, the two turned toward her from the sofa, heartache they couldn't conceal in their eyes. Yet they hid it well, then sighed again.
Chu Yannan had really gone too far tonight. Even if he didn't like her, he shouldn't have said those things to a girl's face. If he hadn't been a member of the Chu Family,
Father Liu would already have found someone to beat him up.
"Dad, Mom, I'm home." Her voice had lost some of its liveliness. The change in her mood naturally didn't escape either of them, and their sighs grew even louder.
Liu Muyan looked up and asked in bewilderment,
"Do you two have heart trouble?"
