  • Eastern district — A major contested area during the prolonged fighting between the National Liberation Alliance and the four local brigades 25 33.

History

Surprise Attack

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on December 6, the Alliance for National Liberation and Progress, usually called the National Liberation Alliance, began shelling Nijia and advancing into its streets. The city government alerted Sankara's administration, while repeated attempts to contact the Vidal Brigade failed 17.

The brigade's disappearance left just over 2,000 armed police as the principal defenders against more than 6,000 militants equipped with artillery, mortars, and armored vehicles. The police possessed mainly light weapons and only a small number of heavy weapons 17 18 22.

Many city officials fled, but Mayor Jieke'er remained. Despite outside telephone lines being cut, he contacted Police Chief Old William and passed on news that eight brigades had been ordered to reinforce Nijia 21.

Police Resistance and the Hospital Stand

The attackers had expected to capture Nijia in three hours, but the police held out through the night. The Ministry of National Defense attributed their resistance to their familiarity with the streets, urban-combat experience, and determination to protect families living in the city 22.

Krov returned with more than 300 soldiers and assumed unified command. Their intervention prevented the defense from collapsing at police headquarters and prolonged resistance until relief arrived 23.

As casualties mounted, the defenders retreated to Nijia Public Hospital. Its generator eventually exhausted its fuel, leaving the hospital without electricity. Wounded police officers, soldiers, doctors, and a nurse took up weapons as militants approached the building 22 23.

At approximately 11:50 a.m., the attackers breached the hospital's last defensive line. Fighters and bombers then appeared overhead, striking rebel positions and forcing the militants to retreat. Old William recognized Burkina's flag on the aircraft and told the survivors that they had lived 23 24. The initial defense had lasted approximately 28 hours 25 26.

Relief Forces and Renewed Fighting

Sankara committed the following formations to the relief operation 18:

Force Units
Local brigades Aksang Brigade, Drago Brigade, Ailidun Brigade, Duojialong Brigade
Dugagu Division 1st Light Armored Brigade, 2nd Infantry Brigade
Vagar Division 4th Light Armored Brigade, 5th Infantry Brigade

The local brigades moved after receiving substantial government funding and promises of a further reward for lifting the siege. The Aksang Brigade reached Nijia's outskirts during the air intervention and attacked immediately, hoping to secure the bonus before the others arrived 19 24.

Its initial advance nearly drove the rebels from the urban area, but the National Liberation Alliance recovered and retook much of eastern Nijia. The other three local brigades also suffered setbacks. Katelai subsequently reported that large numbers of French mercenaries had helped reverse the rebels' fortunes 25 26.

On December 10 at 4:21 p.m., the four Central Army brigades arrived by rail with more than 27,000 troops, armor, and modern equipment 25.

Prolonged Frontline Fighting

The local brigades became bogged down in the eastern district. Their commanders concluded that Central Army deployments behind them were intended to prevent withdrawal and enforce battle discipline 33.

Once the local commanders had fallen into line, the Ministry of National Defense began rotating Central Army battalions and companies into combat every two days. These troops generally occupied less important positions where fighting was comparatively limited, using battlefield service as practical training 44.

By December 21, Aaron was serving with the 213th Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade, Dugagu Division on the Nijia front. Trenches, shell craters, and uncollected bodies covered the battlefield 44.

Recapture and Aftermath

On December 21, the National Liberation Alliance withdrew across the entire Nijia front. Government troops advanced into its abandoned positions and recovered all occupied territory 45 46.

French intelligence later learned that its mercenaries had killed Alliance leaders who opposed retreat and then led the withdrawal. The reported losses included roughly 150–200 Alliance deaths and 400 wounded per day, alongside more than 40 mercenary deaths and 150 wounded per day 48.

After Nijia's recapture, Sankara ordered a one-billion-franc bonus divided among the four local brigades according to their contributions. He then directed them to attack Alliance-held territory rather than remain idle and expand their forces 47 48 49.

Strategic Importance

  • Defensive position — Sankara considered holding Nijia essential to containing a wider civil war. Together with Bugani in the south, it formed a key part of his defensive planning 26.
  • Military consolidation — The relief operation allowed Sankara to compel otherwise uncooperative local brigades to fight under Ministry of National Defense orders 18 33.
  • Combat training — The front provided controlled battlefield experience for newly expanded Central Army formations 44.

Wartime Damage

  • Urban destruction — Within less than a day and a half, fighting had reduced much of the city to shattered walls and rubble; intact buildings continued to collapse under shellfire 25.
  • Civilian casualties — Numerous civilians were killed in occupied districts, where militants also committed abuse and violence against residents 20.
  • Medical disruption — Nijia's only large hospital faced an influx of critically wounded patients, fuel exhaustion, and a direct assault 20 23.
  • Communications losses — Rebels cut outside telephone lines, while the disappearance of the Vidal Brigade severed contact with the city's regular military defenders 17 21.
