Background / History
Early life and sect position
Luo Ling taught Chen Xi from childhood. He became her second disciple, senior to Nangong Yao and Qin Tiexin and junior to Xu Yi. His maternal uncle, Master Chen of Green Cliff Town, gave Qin Tiexin a wooden token and recommended seeking Chen Xi’s help at the Flowing Cloud Sect—before Qin knew they would become fellow disciples 147 346.
Three years before his visit to Bai Shao’s clinic, Chen Xi suffered near-fatal injuries. Su Qing spent three months nursing him back to health, but he disappeared without saying goodbye once he recovered. Bai Shao later confronted him over the distress his departure had caused her master 356.
Meeting Qin Tiexin and the Black Cloud Ridge mission
Chen Xi’s first meeting with Qin Tiexin began with Luo Ling exposing his Substitute Puppet and ordering him to remove his disguise. He welcomed his junior brother with teleportation talismans, a death-substitution puppet, protective jade, and pills for feigning death 163.
Luo Ling subsequently assigned him to lead Qin Tiexin’s first inner-sect mission. At Black Cloud Ridge, he discovered that the Ironback Wolf king was stronger than the mission intelligence indicated and abandoned the original plan. He instead used puppets, wind-guiding formations, and Immortal-Intoxicating Powder to incapacitate the pack 165 167.
When a wounded wolf escaped, Chen Xi allowed Qin Tiexin to fight while keeping a throwing knife ready and monitoring the battlefield, valley, and surrounding woods simultaneously. Afterward, he treated Qin’s wounds, collected the corpses, retrieved his formations, and erased the bloodstains before withdrawing 168.
Rescue at the Iron Spine Sect ruins
After reuniting with Luo Ling, Chen Xi helped locate Qin Tiexin when his distress talisman shattered and supplied a flying shuttle for the rescue. He later stabilized Qin’s uncontrolled cultivation and used a formation to channel spilled Essence Blood back into his wounds 311 326.
Chen Xi sorted the recovered supplies, returned Qin Tiexin’s belongings, and disclosed intelligence obtained from True Person Xueying’s soul: the Devil Race planned to attack Wind and Snow Pass at noon. Before leaving, he demolished the cave and concealed true spirit artifacts containing faint phantoms among the rubble, erasing his own traces 329.
At Wind and Snow Pass, Yang Qingxue recognized him as “Yang Chen” and accused him of falsely claiming that a curse had left him with little time to live. Unable to maintain his denial, he handed Qin the soul-search information and fled 331.
Heavenly South Domain and Su Qing’s treatment
Chen Xi circled back to escort Qin Tiexin to the Heavenly South Domain, where Luo Ling entrusted him with finding a third-realm medical cultivator to treat Qin’s severed arm. He prepared the merchant identity “Li Shan” for himself and helped Qin assume the identity of the warrior monk Mingjue 346 353 354.
After finding that Physician Qian had vanished, Chen Xi returned to Su Qing’s former clinic. Bai Shao told him that her master had gone to the capital on a commission. Chen Xi suspected danger and headed for Ten Thousand Stars City with Qin 355 356.
His investigation located Su Qing inside the imperial palace. To gain access, he arranged for Qin Tiexin to enter the Star Selection carrying a jade puppet containing a sliver of his soul. He also supplied exam information, disguise talismans, and Demon Beast corpses for Qin’s cultivation 385 386 397.
Once Su Qing agreed to treat Qin, Chen Xi instructed him to reach the final four to secure sufficient time in the palace’s secret realm. He prepared the preserved arm with medicinal ingredients and Demon Beast Essence Blood, then appeared through the jade puppet to assist with the treatment 598 603 637.
Bloodline curse investigation
After Qin Tiexin reported evidence of a curse affecting the imperial Chen Household, Chen Xi infiltrated Jialan City by successively assuming the identities of a monk, steward, hall master, and high-ranking Buddhist cultivator. He uncovered the Holy Buddha Son’s plan to use Devil Venerable Xuanli’s bracelet and imperial blood to attack the household’s inherited star power 663 667.
He returned injured after fighting a Golden Core Peak monk. Despite the danger, he urged Qin to concentrate on reaching Meridian Opening while he handled the investigation. Later, he brought Bai Shao and Su Qing’s medicinal garden to Zhaoming Temple and organized their return journey to the Azure Xuan Region 666 667 683.
Ambush and clone destruction
On the road to Falling Star City, Chen Xi detected a Golden Core pursuer. Route changes, warning formations, insect puppets, Demon Beast disguises, and decoy puppets all failed to shake the tail. Buddhist cultivators led by Xiao Wan, Benchi, and Juesong eventually trapped the pair within multiple formations 686 687.
Chen Xi revealed Golden Core Peak cultivation and attacked with puppets, formations, talismans, and flying swords. He killed four Golden Core Early Stage opponents in the opening ambush and another with poison, but the two opposing Golden Core Peak cultivators gradually overwhelmed him. Many of his escape methods could save only himself, so he refused to abandon Qin 689 690 691.
Using a counterfeit bracelet to create an opening, Chen Xi threw Qin Tiexin clear and self-destructed among the attackers. The resulting chain of Golden Core explosions opened an escape route 692.
The destroyed Chen Xi was a clone. His true body, secluded in the Azure Xuan Region, received its memories and suffered backlash that postponed his Nascent Soul formation. Concerned that Qin might act rashly before reading the jade pendant he had given him, he decided to wait for his junior brother’s return 692.
Appearance
- True body: Appears twenty-five or twenty-six, with a lean build, delicate features, a high nose bridge, thin lips, and a scholarly air. This appearance is confirmed when his true body is shown in seclusion 692.
- Habitual presentation: Often adopts deliberately ordinary features, drab clothing, and concealed cultivation to avoid being remembered 353 356.
- Body language: Frequently scans his surroundings, stands partly sideways, and keeps a hand near his storage artifacts 163 168.
- Disguises and incarnations: Has appeared as merchants, a rotund teahouse proprietor, a muscular body cultivator, a monk, an alluring woman through a puppet incarnation, and a wildcat-like Demon Beast 353 384 597 663 666 686.
Personality
Chen Xi treats survival as the first requirement of cultivation and artifact refining. His preparations include redundant weapons, antidotes, warning talismans, defensive formations, and escape routes; he recommends keeping “a backup for your backup” and checking a departure checklist three times. Luo Ling finds his caution excessive, though she acknowledges the usefulness of his creations 163 165.
His easygoing smile and languid manner conceal sharp observation. When Qin Tiexin’s disguises and impulsive decisions create dangerous connections between his identities, Chen Xi becomes stern, identifies the mistakes individually, and devises practical countermeasures rather than merely reprimanding him 559 560.
His caution does not override his loyalty. He repeatedly supplies Qin with expensive resources, risks infiltration to locate Su Qing, and refuses to escape alone during the Buddhist ambush. His reluctance to enter the Central Heaven Great Region also reflects a deliberate preference for cultivating somewhere he considers survivable rather than exposing himself to far stronger cultivators 386 397 690 692.
Abilities & Skills
Puppet Crafting and Split-Soul Incarnations
- Substitute Puppets: Houses a separated wisp of his soul in a puppet capable of wielding seventy percent of his strength and self-destructing to delay enemies 163.
- Specialized puppets: Uses scouting, earth-burrowing, insect, and humanoid decoy puppets for reconnaissance, covert movement, and misleading pursuers 167 486 686.
- Jade manifestation: Can manifest through a jade figurine containing a sliver of his soul, allowing Qin to carry an incarnation into the palace 386 637.
- Independent clone operations: His traveling clone operated while his true body cultivated elsewhere and transmitted its memories upon destruction 692.
- Limits: Puppet control requires concentration. Injury and pressure from powerful opponents prevented him from continuing to direct his puppets during the ambush; destroying the clone also injured his true body 689 692.
Disguise and Infiltration
- Alters facial structure, height, physique, voice, clothing, and apparent cultivation to support assumed identities 163 353 663.
- Combines physical disguise methods, ointments, talismans, puppets, and rehearsed personal histories rather than relying on a single technique 353 354 356.
- Warns that disguise talismans can reveal spiritual fluctuations to high-level cultivators and that unchanged voices, builds, habits, or martial techniques can expose an identity 353 559 560.
- Uses successive identities to penetrate restricted organizations, as demonstrated by his infiltration of Jialan City 667.
Artifact and Talisman Refining
- Specializes in jade artifacts, Soul-Protection Jade, Substitute Puppets, and items designed for escape 163 165.
- Crafts Divine Travel Talismans that enable travel of two hundred li in a two-hour period 166.
- Produces improved Form-Changing Talismans and counterfeit artifacts, including a replica of Xuanli’s bracelet intended to divert attention from the original 386 560.
- Acknowledges that his artifact-refining ability does not match Luo Ling’s 163.
Formations, Reconnaissance, and Poisons
- Uses formation flags and monitoring mirrors to observe targets, guide wind, distribute sedatives, and detect approaching threats 167 168.
- Divides his Divine Sense into three strands to watch separate areas simultaneously 168.
- Employs Immortal-Intoxicating Powder, Spirit-Eroding Pills, antidotes, and poisons to disable enemies without direct confrontation 167 172 691.
- Places explosive talismans precisely enough to collapse a cave and uses powders to remove blood and other battlefield traces 168 329.
Combat and Defensive Techniques
- Combines puppets, formation disks, talismans, and flying swords in coordinated attacks rather than relying on a single main weapon 689.
- Uses the Thousand-Layer Force Dissipation Method to disperse Qin Tiexin’s powerful punch during a surprise test 666.
- Can resist two Golden Core Peak opponents temporarily, but their combined pressure overwhelms his enhanced clone 689 692.
- Possesses numerous personal escape methods, many of which cannot protect a companion 690.
Injury Assessment and Treatment Support
- Detects depleted foundations, minute meridian cracks, and Dantian exhaustion after Qin forcibly raises his cultivation, then helps clear the damage 558.
- Stabilizes uncontrolled energy circulation and directs Essence Blood into wounds through a formation 326.
- Preserves Qin’s severed arm and prepares it with herbs, Essence Blood, venom, and tendon from a Golden Core Middle Stage Golden-Tailed Flood Dragon; Su Qing performs the reattachment treatment 598 603 637.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Concealed storage artifacts: Carries multiple storage bags, a storage ring, and an inconspicuous storage anklet, keeping supplies distributed across his body 163 386.
- Flying artifacts: Uses a flying shuttle for long-distance travel and less conspicuous flying weapons or a repaired low-grade shuttle when maintaining a cover identity 346 354 686.
- Three-inch silver throwing knife: Kept ready while supervising Qin’s fight with an Ironback Wolf 167 168.
- Little Death-Substitution Puppet: His early version automatically blocks one fatal attack below Golden Core; he gives one to Qin Tiexin 163.
- Soul-Protection Jade: The version given to Qin blocks mental or soul attacks up to Foundation Establishment Late Stage, with a maximum of ten uses 163.
- Teleportation Talismans: His first gift includes five Greater talismans with a three-hundred-li range and five Lesser talismans with a thirty-li range 163.
- Turtle Breath Pills: Suppress the user’s presence to imitate death; one later helps Qin deceive Cao Mu 163 194.
- Defensive field supplies: Carries formation disks, antidotes, warning talismans, smoke bombs, demon-binding ropes, and healing medicines 165.
