Power Progression

The following milestones track Qin Tiexin’s mastery of Spirit Runes, rather than cultivation realms belonging to the runes themselves.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Structural study 75 76 The Illustrated Catalog records Basic Sharpness and provides its structural diagram and practice projection. Without spiritual power, Qin can memorize the structure but cannot perform actual engraving practice.
Spiritual Qi tracing 89 At Qi Refining First Layer, he traces a complete Sharpness Rune in the air with real Spiritual Qi.
Broken-rune repair 90 Reconnects a discarded saber’s broken Sharpness Rune, successfully restoring the Semi-Law Artifact.
Proficient basic inscription 93 Masters Thousand Jun after a month and a half of practice and completes Sharpness inscription on a newly forged saber despite his limited Qi Refining Second Layer reserves.
Dual-rune nesting 126 129 Learns Old Wu’s nesting technique and uses Divine Sense to complete a forearm shield with interconnected Sturdiness and Rebound Runes.
Three-rune arrangement 158 Inscribes Thousand Jun, Toughness, and Spirit Devouring on Edgeless using a Buffer Triangle, keeping the three runes from interfering without forming a true array.
Three-rune array practice 161 Studies the Thousand Jun–Toughness–Rebound combination, reaching a sixty-percent success rate by the end of the month.
Bone-rune inscription 171 Completes his first Spirit-Conducting Rune on bone; his success rate subsequently rises from one in ten to three in ten.
Reliable same-attribute arrays 203 Stronger Divine Sense and finer spiritual-power control raise his three-rune array success rate from seventy to eighty percent. He also becomes proficient with Spirit-Conducting Runes.
Middle-Grade Law Artifact array 205 Completes the Flame Spirit Sword’s continuous Blazing Sun–Sharpness–Fire-Gathering circuit.
Spirit Rune Weakness Insight 207 The Catalog records forty-two mastered runes. Completing its second-stage mission unlocks an ability that reveals defects in rune networks.
Five-rune offensive array 569 570 Forges a short blade bearing Sharpness, Armor Piercing, Paralysis, Vibration, and Bleeding after attempting barehanded artifact refining.
Flexible three-rune composition 585 Can combine three independent runes into an array with little practice, no longer requiring three of the same type. His wood-attribute scabbard reaches Upper-Grade Law Artifact standard.

Nature and Structure

  • Spirit Runes are energy circuits, not merely engraved pictures. Their paths and nodes must be adjusted to an artifact’s material and shape 79.
  • A rune’s performance depends on line direction, thickness, depth, node placement, and the flow of spiritual power through its structure 76.
  • Different patterns produce different effects; combinations can provide sharpness, sturdiness, lightness, wind control, fire creation, or water gathering 76.
  • Material compatibility matters even when the rune is unchanged. Inscribing Sturdiness on different metals requires adjustments to stroke depth, spiritual-power rhythm, and finishing force 108.

Basic Sharpness Structure

Property Details
Pattern Linear composite structure 76
Main Lines Six 76
Auxiliary Lines Twelve 76
Nodes Twenty-four 76
Effect Slightly improves sharpness and armor-piercing ability, with low spiritual-power consumption 76
Common Carriers Azure-Veined Iron and refined iron 76
Best-Matched Materials Mysterious Iron Sand and Sharp Metal Stone 76
Known Weaknesses Spiritual power can stagnate at nodes three, seven, and fifteen; regular nurturing is required 76

Inscription and Compatibility

Engraving Requirements

  • Continuous power: Conventional inscription requires uninterrupted spiritual-power input and precise strokes. Master Liu describes middle-stage Qi Refining as the usual minimum for sufficient reserves, although Qin completes basic inscriptions earlier 76 93.
  • Steady execution: Uneven depth, interrupted power, or an abrupt finishing stroke can produce breaks or congestion 102 108.
  • Material feedback: Refiners must sense how spiritual power interacts with the carrier rather than rely on sight alone 108.
  • Divine Sense: Allows close monitoring of incision depth, curvature, width, and existing rune activity. Qin divides his Divine Sense between an unfinished rune and a completed one when nesting them 129.
  • Suitable temperature: A half-molten artifact can allow runes to penetrate deeply and bond with its material 208.
  • Advanced methods: Luo Ling forms runes in the air, merges them, and embeds the resulting array into a saber with a palm strike. Qin later engraves a scabbard’s array with an ordinary knife and no assisting spiritual power during the carving 148 585.

Attribute and Spatial Compatibility

  • Generating attributes interfere less. The compatibility text gives the cycle metal → water → wood → fire → earth → metal. Opposing combinations require greater caution 104.
  • Compatible attributes can still clash physically. Sturdiness belongs to earth and Rebound to metal, but Qin’s early shield fails because their paths lie too close together 103 104.
  • Carrier quality limits complexity. Lower-grade materials struggle to support multiple circuits; stronger materials can sustain more elaborate spiritual-power structures 103.
  • Similar functions simplify array design. Force- and defense-oriented runes can share channels more readily, while conflicting elemental runes such as Flame, Frost, and Lightning are much harder to combine 161.

Failure and Repair

  • Overlapping paths can trigger interference, overload, and explosions. Qin’s first attempt to add Rebound to a Sturdiness shield severely wounds his back 103.
  • Disturbances during engraving can ruin a rune or cause it to explode 106.
  • Damaged remnants remain dangerous. An eighty-percent-destroyed Rebound Rune still contains an unstable circuit requiring controlled dismantling 89.
  • Repairs must fit the repaired material. Qin adjusts a replacement rune’s turning angle instead of copying its original path exactly, improving flow through the restored metal 228.
  • Misaligned repairs create exploitable weaknesses. A recently repaired rune in Meng Qingxin’s puppet leaves a gap in its cushioning layer, allowing Qin to crack the chest armor 491.

Spirit Rune Combinations

Arrangement Methods

Method Structure Advantages and Limits
Separate runes Runes occupy distinct locations and can activate in sequence. One rune can fail without necessarily destroying the others 205.
Buffer Triangle Three runes are spaced in a triangular arrangement. Maintains stable coexistence without the runes becoming a true array 158.
Spirit Rune Nesting Runes share space through controlled junctions that divide or exchange spiritual power. Enables dual-rune inscription and forms a foundation for Middle-Grade Law Artifact arrays 126 129.
Spirit Rune Array Three or more runes connect and resonate through a shared circuit. Reduces consumption, speeds switching, and increases power, but a failed continuous inscription can ruin the entire set 161 205.
Complete fusion Rune effects become parts of a unified formation rather than merely linked individual functions. Qin identifies this as distinct from ordinary rune arrays; fully fusing his scabbard’s three runes would bring it into Spirit Artifact territory 583 585.

Applications

Artifact Grades

Artifact Category Relationship to Spirit Runes
Mundane Artifact An ordinary weapon without Spirit Runes 76.
Semi-Law Artifact Mundane iron combined with Spirit Runes 76.
Lower-Grade Law Artifact Often bears one or two runes, although accommodating a second can strain its materials 84 103.
Middle-Grade Law Artifact Uses combined rune formations. Artifacts containing more than fifty percent spiritual material generally need an array of at least three runes to realize their material potential 84 161.
Supreme-Grade Law Artifact Requires an array of at least five Spirit Runes 569.
Spirit Artifact Described as possessing spirituality, awareness, and master recognition; Qin’s later work also connects this grade with complete rune fusion 76 585.

Bone Artifacts

  • Different source of abilities: Iron artifacts obtain their abilities from Spirit Runes, while bone artifacts primarily draw out the innate talents of Spirit Bones 633.
  • Preserving innate structures: Added runes must avoid damaging or conflicting with existing pathways. Qin uses Gathering Spirit Runes to nourish wolf fangs’ innate Wind Blade ability 211.
  • Linked power networks: Gathering Spirit Runes on auxiliary bones supply energy, while a continuous Spirit-Conducting Rune links the components to a central bone 633.
  • Direct skeletal inscription: Youlun engraves runes into his own palm and finger bones rather than depending on external tools 261 262.

Puppets and Other Devices

  • Battle puppets: Spirit Runes appear on joint plates, armor, weapons, and drive cores. Spirit Pivot Sect manuals document their pathways alongside attack configurations and emergency repairs 485.
  • Alchemy furnaces: An older Gathering Spirit design with two extra loops can significantly improve pill-flame stability 442.
  • Cauldrons: Heating, Heat Retention, Tempering, Frost, and Harmonization Runes form part of the great cauldron’s framework. Its Heavenly Cycle Spirit Gathering Formation contains 360 runes arranged in three layers 349 664.
  • Accessories: A Wood Spirit Essence-Gathering Pendant uses three wood-attribute runes to gather ambient Qi and extend a blade’s spiritual glow by about twenty percent 425.
  • Concealed influence: The unfamiliar rune on Han Tao’s primordial spirit jade turns pink as the jade subjects him to hidden control, after which he retains no memory of the event 334.
  • Spatial devices: Youlun crushes a densely inscribed rune stone to open a spatial rift and escape 340.

Study and Analysis

Illustrated Catalog of Ten Thousand Artifacts

  • Recording and practice: The All Laws Return to Artifacts quest initially requires ten basic rune structures. Each recorded structure unlocks basic analysis and a Void Realm for copying and inscription practice 75.
  • Detailed models: Catalog entries can identify structure, effects, suitable carriers, preferred materials, and weak nodes 76.
  • Spirit Rune Weakness Insight: Reveals energy congestion, unstable nodes, and incompatibility between rune paths and artifact materials 207.
  • Refining feedback: Qin uses the insight to detect an impurity obstruction, an unstable attribute junction, and an excessively sharp curve in his Flame Spirit Sword 207.
  • Combat use: The same ability can expose weak points in an opponent’s Law Artifact 207.

Recorded Teaching Materials

  • Foundational texts: An Elementary Explanation of Spirit Runes and One Hundred Common Spirit Rune Examples are available through the Scripture Pavilion 84.
