Appearance
Xiao Ling'er is a petite young woman with fair skin, an exquisitely featured face, and clear, almond-shaped eyes 10.
- Hair: Long and black; worn loose in her chambers and tied in a high ponytail with her riding outfit 39 40.
- Usual attire: Fiery-red martial or riding clothes, tall riding boots, and a red-gold waist ribbon 22 40 42.
- Other clothing: A moon-white ruqun trimmed with fox fur for the main-hall audience, and pale gauze dresses in her private quarters 29 36 39.
- Signature accessory: A red-tailed snakebone whip, often coiled around her waist 22 40.
Personality
Xiao Ling'er is notorious within the residence for being willful, overbearing, and quick to threaten servants with her whip. Her pride also makes her vulnerable to provocation: the Black Tiger Gang's insults repeatedly push her toward attacking without adequately judging the danger 11 43 48.
Her harsh language frequently conceals concern. She deliberately misses an injured Chen Xuan with her whip, orders him to bandage his hands after rescuing her, and later gives him precious wound medicine. When challenged about this kindness, she frames it as protecting her reputation or avoiding inconvenience 11 28 32 38.
She values loyalty particularly strongly after the attack on Treading Snow exposes the possibility of a traitor within the household. She chooses Chen Xuan because she believes his rescue proves his devotion and that he lacks ties to competing branches. His apparent self-sacrifice gradually earns her trust and affection, although she does not recognize how carefully he manipulates that impression 31 32 38 46.
Abilities & Skills
Whip Techniques
Her whip style emphasizes lightness, precision, and difficult angles rather than direct contests of strength 43.
- Strikes a wooden post ten paces away accurately enough to blast splinters from it 22.
- Deliberately places a warning lash beside Chen Xuan rather than hitting him 11.
- Attempts to catch Liu Heng's ankle with her whip to interrupt his attack on Chen Xuan, but cannot reach him in time 45.
- Limitation: Her practice-ground experience leaves her disadvantaged against hardened opponents. Liu Heng, despite sharing her Middle Stage of Ming Jin realm, overpowers her through strength and body-conditioning training, splitting the web of her hand 43.
Qi Control and Cultivation Assessment
She can direct her Qi through her fingertips to examine another martial artist's meridians 37.
- Confirms that Chen Xuan displays Early-stage Bright Force cultivation and an unusually solid Boulder Art foundation 37.
- Limitation: Her examination does not penetrate his concealment; he successfully hides his Middle Stage of Ming Jin cultivation and Yang Gang power 37.
- Cannot overcome the wind pressure of Lei Hu's full-force attack quickly enough to intervene with her whip 50.
Horsemanship
She mounts Treading Snow with practiced agility and has ridden him for almost two years 23.
- Rides both on the household training grounds and through Qingzhou City 23 42.
- Limitation: Her familiarity with the horse leads her to dismiss Instructor Zhang's warning about his agitation before the poisoned-hoof incident 23.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red-tailed snakebone whip — Her primary weapon, described on introduction as blackish-red 10 22.
- Treading Snow — Her black riding horse, distinguished by snow-white forehooves; survives the poisoning and later accompanies her to the western market 23 41 43.
- Jade Skin Wound Salve — Precious, palace-bestowed medicine that she gives Chen Xuan for his injured hands 38.
- Property accounts and seals — Entrusted to her by the First Madam when she assumes management of the estate's western-market properties 41.
History
First Encounter with Chen Xuan
Xiao Ling'er first confronts Chen Xuan near the training grounds' weapon rack after noticing him watching her eldest brother practice. She suspects him of secretly learning the household's martial arts, but accepts his self-deprecating explanation that he was merely awed by the heir's display. Rather than strike the already injured servant, she lashes a nearby stone table and sends him to replace the tea 10 11.
Poisoned Horse Incident
When Chen Xuan brings Treading Snow to the training grounds, Xiao Ling'er notices that his scalded hand appears to have healed overnight. He dismisses her suspicion with a story about soot and herbal dregs. She then mounts despite Instructor Zhang's warning that the horse seems unsettled 22 23.
Poisoned bamboo barbs hidden in the horse's hooves drive him into a frenzy. Chen Xuan stops him three paces before a narrow stone bridge, badly injuring his hands, then catches Xiao Ling'er when she loses consciousness and falls from the saddle. Her initial relief turns to humiliation when the guards find her disheveled in his arms 23 24 25.
Su Wanqing identifies Itching Ant Grass on a thorn removed from the horse's hoof. She subsequently clarifies that the measured dose could have caused broken limbs or disfigurement on the training grounds; the unexpected charge toward the bridge made the danger potentially fatal. Xiao Ling'er releases Chen Xuan without punishment and orders him to bind his wounds 26 27 28.
Appointment of a Personal Guard
Xiao Ling'er argues that returning Chen Xuan to the stables would leave him exposed to Xiao Yuxuan's hostility. With a suspected mole in the household, she demands a personal guard loyal only to her and selects Chen Xuan on the strength of his rescue. The First Madam approves his transfer to the Listening to Rain Pavilion despite Xiao Yuxuan's objections 31 32.
After apparently verifying his pill-assisted breakthrough, she gives him wound salve and quarters in the pavilion. She also tests his obedience and blood-Qi control by ordering him to massage her sore legs. His treatment and increasingly bold compliments leave her flustered 37 38 39 40.
When Chun Tao deliberately tips boiling tea toward Chen Xuan, Xiao Ling'er recognizes the attack. Following his plea for leniency, she spares the maid a whipping but orders ten bamboo strokes, three months without wages, and reassignment to menial work 40 41.
Western Market Confrontation
The First Madam had placed two streets of western Qingzhou properties under Xiao Ling'er's management at the end of the previous month. Within ten days, employees were being beaten and thugs were disrupting the shops. Xiao Ling'er suspects a connection between these incidents and the poisoning that occurred as she prepared to inspect the accounts 41.
At the silk shop, she confronts Black Tiger Gang members demanding three thousand taels. Liu Heng overpowers her whip, but Chen Xuan steps between them and defeats him. Believing her guard has suffered serious injuries, she rushes to inspect his hand, slips, and is caught by him again 42 43 44 45 46.
The gang then seals the street with fifty or sixty armed men. Its Second Boss, Lei Hu, threatens her and reveals that his superiors ordered him to teach her a lesson. Chen Xuan prevents her from charging forward and takes a position in front of her. When Lei Hu attacks, she desperately attempts to intervene, but his weapon's wind pressure forces her backward 47 48 49 50.
Relationships
- Chen Xuan — Her rescuer and personal guard. She develops trust, concern, and growing attraction toward him; he conceals his strength and deliberately cultivates her favor to secure resources and protection 24 31 37 38 46 47.
- Xiao Yuxuan — Her eldest brother. She resists his efforts to control her choice of guard and fears he may secretly kill Chen Xuan 11 31.
- First Madam — Senior household authority whom she addresses as “Mother.” Approves Chen Xuan's appointment and entrusts Xiao Ling'er with the western-market properties 31 32 41.
- Marquis of Zhenbei — Her father. She invokes the residence's authority against the Black Tiger Gang 48.
- Lin Wan'er — Close friend and the prefect's daughter. Teases her about sparing Chen Xuan and later blushing over him; shields her and helps straighten her clothes after the horse incident 10 11 25 28.
- Su Wanqing — Investigates Treading Snow's poisoning and explains the attack's intended consequences 26 27.
- Qiu Yue — Attendant who manages access to her chambers and arranges Chen Xuan's accommodation and reporting schedule 36 38 39.
- Lei Hu — Black Tiger Gang Second Boss who surrounds her party, threatens her, and dismisses her reliance on her family's authority 47 48.
