Background / History
Partnership with Grindelwald
Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald were close childhood friends who shared adventures, debated magical theory, and planned changes to the Wizarding World. Trusting Grindelwald, Dumbledore supported overturning the International Statute of Secrecy and establishing wizard rule over Muggles. He also accepted Grindelwald’s later proposal that exceptional individuals should rule regardless of whether they were wizards or Muggles 111 113.
The slogan “For the Greater Good,” later adopted by the Acolytes, originated with Dumbledore 111.
Ariana’s Death
Dumbledore’s pursuit of magic with Grindelwald led him to neglect Ariana. After she became an Obscurus and nearly died, he regretted his behavior and searched for a treatment. Grindelwald suspended his own work to help; during their search, they found the Elder Wand and nearly lost spells 113.
Tensions with Aberforth eventually escalated into a genuine battle. Ariana intervened and was accidentally struck by a spell. Combined with her existing condition, the injury proved fatal; she could not be saved at St. Mungo’s 113.
Her death separated the three men and shaped their conflicting philosophies. Dumbledore discovered the magic of love and blamed his failure to provide sufficient affection and support. Grindelwald instead concluded that he had lacked the strength to save her 113.
Appearance
- Appears as a relatively young-looking, middle-aged man when he visits Mo Orphanage; Mo Fei notes that he does not yet possess the kindly benevolence associated with his original-story counterpart 128.
- Wears glasses, which sometimes conceal his reactions 186 273.
- Frequently smiles and carries sweets in his pockets for students 218.
Personality
Dumbledore is approachable and attentive as a teacher. His sweets and friendly manner make him popular across house boundaries, while his targeted instruction helps Kyle develop an unusual talent for Transfiguration. He is genuinely pleased to discover that Mo Fei continues to care deeply about Kyle after the boy leaves the orphanage 129 130 218.
His concern for children is accompanied by caution about their independence. He repeatedly warns against premature spellcasting, restricts Tom to first-year textbooks, and worries that exceptional talent could develop into another threat like Grindelwald. Tom consequently finds his attention intrusive rather than reassuring 175 183 186 189.
Ariana’s death and his separation from Grindelwald remain unresolved burdens. Dippet warns that taking responsibility for everything will make both his life and his magic increasingly heavy. Herbert likewise urges him not to sacrifice his future by continually dwelling on the past 200 242.
Dumbledore publicly rejects wizard domination of Muggles and defends the International Statute of Secrecy. Nevertheless, Mo Fei challenges the paternalism behind his ideals, arguing that his apparent equality rests on pity for supposedly weaker people. The criticism unsettles him, and he listens rather than retaliating 159 273 274.
Abilities & Skills
Transfiguration
Dumbledore is a master of Transfiguration whose magical philosophy centers on absolute control 175 268.
- Material transformation: Demonstrates both superficial and internal changes by turning a lectern into iron and exposing its interior 218.
- Living transformations: Changes the lectern into a lion and repeatedly shifts it between living creatures and inanimate objects 218.
- Consecutive transformations: Demonstrates rapid changes between different forms during class 218.
- Spatial transformation: Expands a small reception room until its interior is comparable to a playing field 275.
- Barrier creation: Silently adds a Transfiguration barrier inside Aberforth’s Dueling Domain, making it difficult for even Aberforth to break through without permission 250.
- Safety instruction: Warns against eating transfigured food and using Transfiguration on people or magical objects without permission. He also cautions against transforming magical beings unless the caster’s strength completely surpasses theirs 218 219.
Magic Master: Control
His breakthrough through Transfiguration grants him control, contrasting with Grindelwald’s resonance 268.
- According to Grindelwald, an opponent unable to escape Dumbledore’s control risks having both their magic and thoughts brought under his influence 268.
- His superior control lets him appropriate much of Aberforth’s attacking fire during their confrontation 250.
- He withholds Magic Master-level attacks against Mo Fei because they would cause changes in celestial phenomena and attract other wizards’ attention 177.
- Grindelwald’s strength is described as being on the same level as his; a serious battle between them would depend on narrow advantages and careful attention to detail 213.
Fire Magic
Dumbledore combines powerful fire spells with unusually precise manipulation 177 178 250.
- Incendio: Projects a giant, serpent-like surge of flame that scorches the ground and radiates heat far enough for Tom to feel it from the sidelines 177.
- Flaming phoenixes: Controls phoenix-shaped flames during his duel with Mo Fei 178.
- Protego Diabolica: Redirects Aberforth’s incoming flames into a circular defensive barrier. The accumulated fire becomes bluish-white and protects him from explosions and repeated lightning attacks 250.
- Wand compatibility: His phoenix-feather wand possesses rebirth-through-fire properties and exceptional control over flames 176.
Dueling and Spell Adaptation
Dumbledore adapts ordinary spells to circumstances rather than relying solely on greater magical output 112 177 214.
- Turns hanging medicinal herbs into numerous binding ropes, restraining Joshua Gilbert and separating him from his wand 112.
- Dodges Joshua’s instinctive Disarming Charm with a sidestep 112.
- Converts Impedimenta into a sustained torrent of impacts to counter Mo Fei’s continuous deflection technique 177.
- Uses the recoil from that barrage to create distance and improve his casting position 177.
- Can make a Disarming Charm launch the target along with their weapon, exceeding the effect achieved by a less capable witch 214.
Memory Magic and Investigation
Dumbledore uses memory examination to identify infiltrators and reconstruct their activities 112 113.
- Views a Muggle’s memories through a Pensieve before accepting the Ministry’s investigation 112.
- Uses Legilimency on Joshua Gilbert to uncover his identity and the approximate locations of other infiltrating wizards 112 113.
- Is only proficient, not a master, in Legilimency; he must follow memories carefully to avoid missing important details 113.
- Selectively removes the Black Snake Gang leader’s memories of wizards before handing him to the police 113.
- Opens a passage through a house’s protective barrier and lets it close behind him without triggering resistance 251.
Time-Related Magic
Dumbledore uses a Time-Turner-assisted examination of the past to investigate the Hill family’s activities 251 252.
- Observes a past meeting in the house rather than undertaking conventional travel into the past 251 252.
- Experiences dizziness, spends considerable time on the examination, and damages the Time-Turner 252.
- Has poor affinity for time magic compared with Grindelwald. At his current level, he cannot independently rewind time 252.
Other Magical Knowledge
- Potions: Identifies the genuine snake-repelling properties of Mo Fei’s nonmagical powder and suggests that Slughorn might improve it 130.
- Magical transport: Uses Floo Powder and later returns Mo Fei and Tom to the orphanage by Apparition 112 189.
- Animagus: Refuses to reveal whether he has an animal form. Mo Fei suspects that unresolved remorse might prevent him from becoming an Animagus, but this remains speculation 276.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Oak wand with a family phoenix-feather core — His original wand, carried since he was eleven. It has grown alongside him and is particularly suited to expressing his strength 176.
- Time-Turner — Used to examine the Hill family’s past meeting; develops a visible crack afterward 251 252.
- Sweets — Carries treats for students and feeds a Cockroach Cluster to the owl delivering the Minister for Magic’s letter 111 218.
- Elder Wand association — Helped discover it while searching for Ariana’s treatment, but does not wield it during his duel with Mo Fei. Grindelwald’s visions foresee it eventually passing to him 113 127 176.
Relationships
- Gellert Grindelwald — Former intimate companion and ideological collaborator, now an opponent whose methods he believes Britain must resist. Dumbledore remains reluctant to become his enemy 111 113.
- Aberforth Dumbledore — Younger brother. Their shared guilt over Ariana leaves their relationship bitter and strained; even a conversation about school security escalates into combat 250 251.
- Ariana — Younger sister whose death anchors his remorse and belief in love’s importance 113.
- Armando Dippet — Headmaster and senior adviser. Dippet views him as a successor, challenges his treatment of Tom, and refuses to force him into a confrontation with Grindelwald 111 200 252.
- Mo Fei — Orphanage director, investigative subject, and dueling opponent. Dumbledore admires his care for children but distrusts his independence enough to place surveillance magic outside the orphanage 129 177 273.
- Tom Riddle — Prospective student and later pupil. Tom’s talent, ambition, and ancient wand remind him of Grindelwald, creating a mixture of suspicion, nostalgia, and hope that guiding Tom might symbolically repair his earlier failure 189 200 218.
- Kyle — Student who receives extensive, individualized Transfiguration instruction. Dumbledore identifies imagination and a desire to depict invented creatures as the source of Kyle’s unusual strengths 129.
- Herbert — Senior colleague who advises him to stop allowing the past to dictate his future 242.
- Nicolas Flamel — Old friend. Learning that Flamel has taught Mo Fei forces Dumbledore to reconsider his assumptions about the director’s achievements 273 274.
- Fawkes — His phoenix. Dumbledore turns to him while troubled, then lets him visit Aberforth at the Hog’s Head 252.
Story Role / Major Arcs
London Infiltration Investigation
- Responds to the Minister for Magic’s request concerning Grindelwald’s activities in London, despite Dippet’s warning about imposing his own magical path on others 111 112.
- Captures Joshua Gilbert, identifies additional infiltrators through his memories, and hands the detained wizards to the Ministry 112 113.
- Delivers the Black Snake Gang leader to the police after removing his knowledge of wizards. The investigation also draws his attention to Mo Orphanage 113.
First Visit to Mo Orphanage
- Visits to investigate the earlier attack and initially presents his arrival as a concern for the orphanage’s safety 128 130.
- Revises his assumptions about orphanage guardians after seeing Mo Fei’s continuing concern for Kyle 129.
- Does not initially give Tom excessive attention: the boy is well cared for, his magic is only beginning to emerge, and his Parseltongue remains undiscovered 130.
Duel with Mo Fei
- Reluctantly accepts Mo Fei’s challenge and initially plans to go easy on him 175.
- Takes the fight seriously after discovering that Mo Fei can counter his attacks and potentially kill him if he becomes careless. He still withholds Magic Master-level power 177.
- Gains a greater appreciation of Mo Fei’s abilities; watching the battle also intensifies Tom’s desire to master magic 179 180.
Tom’s Enrollment and Growing Suspicion
- Personally guides Tom and Mo Fei through their school shopping, warns against finger-based spellcasting, and becomes uneasy about Tom’s unusual wand 183 185 186.
- Returns them home and leaves Tom’s train tickets, but increasingly associates the boy with Grindelwald 189.
- Proposes greater vigilance to prevent Tom becoming another Dark Lord. Dippet instead urges him to teach the child without treating suspicion as proof of danger 200.
- His lingering wariness makes Tom reluctant to approach him with questions after class 218.
Hill Family Investigation
- Investigates suspicious activity around Hogsmeade, reluctantly approaching Aberforth for information 249 250.
- Learns that the Hill family may be attempting to provoke conflict between him and Grindelwald 250.
- Examines their former meeting place and discovers that a dangerous Dark Magic object—not an infiltrating dark wizard—was brought into Hogwarts 251 252.
- Reports to Dippet, who takes responsibility for the political response 252.
The Transformed Orphanage
- Observes extraordinary changes at Mo Orphanage through surveillance and suspects Grindelwald’s involvement 273.
- Questions Mo Fei, only to face criticism of his condescending assumptions about Muggles and his reluctance to change the existing order 273 274.
- Initially dismisses Mo Fei’s proposal to create a parallel world as naïve, but listens when challenged to explain how his own approach will resolve the growing conflict 274.
- Subsequently answers Tom’s questions about advanced Transfiguration, demonstrates spatial transformation, and keeps his possible Animagus form private 274 275 276.
Foreseen Confrontations
- Grindelwald’s defeat: During his own advancement ritual, Grindelwald foresees losing to Dumbledore and surrendering the Elder Wand. These passages present a vision, not a completed duel 127.
- Tom opposing Dumbledore: A later vision shows Tom confronting him, suggesting to Grindelwald that the boy could eventually reach their realm of power 127.
- An uncertain future: Grindelwald recognizes that his connection with Tom has altered the relationships linking all three of them, creating possibilities beyond the ending he previously expected 143.
