- Bearing: Described as a graceful gentleman 60.
- Facial hair: Has a beard, which he strokes while thinking 62 77.
Personality
Huang Mengliang is warmhearted, patient, and willing to help others, making him well liked among the Lower Court disciples. He remains one of Chen Jin’s few friends despite Chen’s formerly reserved manner. Chen values him not only for his kindness but also for knowing his boundaries: Huang refrains from prying into private opportunities or demanding explanations for matters Chen chooses not to discuss 60 63 69 73.
Although uncontentious by temperament, Huang strongly resents disciples who flatter the powerful and mistreat those who have fallen from favor. His loyalty can make him openly angry, particularly when Chen Jin is slandered or provoked. He also worries that renewed failure might crush Chen’s confidence, sometimes underestimating his friend’s recovery out of concern for him 62 65 66 69.
Huang is affectionate toward Ye Tong and readily accepts her advice. The couple value a comfortable daily life, including good food and spirit tea, but are poor at managing money; their expenses leave them with limited savings despite years of cultivation 63 66 81.
Abilities & Skills
Fifth Realm Cultivation
Huang is an established Fifth Realm cultivator throughout his documented appearances 60 80.
- His internal Qi helps preserve his youthful appearance 60.
- His cultivation remains one full realm below Liu Chen’s Sixth Realm, a disadvantage that proves decisive in their competition match 80.
Swordsmanship
Huang relies on seasoned combat experience rather than a named sword technique in the supplied passages 80.
- Defeats novice disciples in three successive Sword Competition rounds without much difficulty 76.
- Forces Liu Chen into a troublesome fight and nearly wounds him, despite ultimately losing 80.
- Carries a sword at his waist and reaches for its hilt when rebuking Wu Jing for insulting Chen Jin 69.
Teaching
Huang occasionally receives invitations to lecture fellow disciples. His patience and approachable manner make him a popular instructor 74.
- Has previously helped instruct younger disciples entering the sect 69.
- Recognizes the quality of Chen Jin’s competition lecture and considers his own teaching inferior by comparison 74.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Welcoming Chen Jin Back
When Chen Jin returns after three years away, Huang welcomes him despite being startled by his aged appearance. He explains that the sect had believed Chen dead, reports Yan Hui’s advancement to the Sixth Realm, and invites him home for wine and a nourishing meal 60.
During dinner, Huang asks whether Chen has discovered the problem with his cultivation of the Five Elements Central Qi Scroll. The question unexpectedly triggers Chen’s distress and causes him to cough blood. Huang blames himself, while he and Ye Tong remain concerned throughout Chen’s subsequent seven-day sleep 62.
Financial Help and the Market Visit
Believing Chen Jin impoverished, Huang offers him a loan of one thousand talisman coins—an amount that already strains the couple’s finances. Chen instead produces ten thousand coins as a belated birthday gift for Ye Tong. Huang accepts the gift as a favor to be repaid and accompanies Chen to the mountain market 63.
At the Hundred Swords Studio, Huang bargains five hundred coins off the Azure Spirit Sword’s price and buys it for Ye Tong. He tells her that, strictly speaking, the sword is Chen Jin’s birthday gift. During their outing, he also updates Chen on changes within the Lower Court 63 64.
Defending Chen Jin
Huang becomes furious at rumors portraying Chen Jin as disgraced, abandoned by Elder Qin, and rejected by Yan Hui. After Ye Tong suggests a deliberate smear campaign, he agrees that Yan Hui is the likely source. He nevertheless follows his wife’s advice not to burden Chen with the gossip 65 66.
When Qin Jianyuan returns gravely injured, Huang immediately informs Chen and accompanies him to the elder’s residence. Though permitted only Chen to enter, Huang waits outside for his return 67 68 69.
Huang later intercepts Liu Chen’s group as they approach Chen’s courtyard. He tells them not to disturb Chen’s seclusion and sharply rebukes Wu Jing’s insults. After Chen retaliates against Wu Jing with sword intent, Huang praises him for refusing to tolerate further provocation 69 71.
Sword Competition
Encouraged by Ye Tong, Huang enters the competition with the modest goal of reaching the fourth round. He hopes to face Yan Hui and wear her down for Chen Jin, partly to repay the ten-thousand-coin gift 66 71 80.
| Round | Opponent | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | A new disciple | Victory | Wins quickly and goes to watch Chen Jin’s match 73 74. |
| Second | A novice disciple | Victory | His second consecutive favorable draw 76. |
| Third | A novice disciple | Victory | Reaches his fourth-round goal without much difficulty 71 76. |
| Fourth | Liu Chen | Defeat | Nearly wounds his Sixth Realm opponent but leaves the platform with minor injuries 80. |
After treatment, Huang takes Chen to observe Yan Hui’s scheduled match against Zhou Lang. He and Ye Tong later celebrate Chen’s advancement to the fifth round, with Huang hoping that his friend can regain confidence and rebuild his cultivation path 80 81.
Yan Hui’s Death and Chen Jin’s Departure
Huang watches Chen Jin’s match against Yan Hui and initially believes defeat inevitable when Chen’s sword shatters. Chen’s sudden killing of Yan Hui shocks both him and Ye Tong. They consider whether the death might have been accidental and whether that would lessen his punishment 85 86.
Unable to help once the elders take charge, Huang leaves with Ye Tong, reassured that Qin Jianyuan can speak for Chen. Following Chen’s ten-year exile sentence, he receives his friend’s farewell and agrees to harvest the peaches in Chen’s courtyard when they ripen 87 90.
Relationships
- Ye Tong — Wife and fellow Lower Court disciple. Their marriage is an uncommon same-sect union, and she is his trusted adviser on Chen Jin’s troubles and his own decision to compete 62 65 66.
- Chen Jin — Close friend and junior fellow disciple. Huang offers hospitality, financial assistance, information, and protection without pressing him to reveal private matters 60 63 69 73.
- Qin Jianyuan — An elder who previously showed Huang kindness. Huang is deeply anxious about his injuries and later astonished by his ability to stop Xue Hongmei’s attack with two fingers 68 87.
- Liu Chen — Younger fellow disciple and fourth-round opponent. Huang opposes his harassment of Chen Jin before losing to him in a hard-fought match 69 80.
- Yan Hui — Fellow disciple whom Huang comes to suspect of deliberately damaging Chen Jin’s reputation. He hopes to face her in the competition to help Chen, but never learns the full truth of their conflict 65 77 80 86.
