Background / History
Zhang Junbao’s Expulsion
Juekong was responsible for the mistake that drove Zhang Junbao out of Shaolin. He had witnessed Junbao display internal power during a temple match and suspected him of secretly learning restricted martial arts. He initially refused to believe that a furnace boy raised by the menial monk Jueyuan could have developed such strength without instruction 21.
While staying at Shaolin’s Grand Vision Inn in Xia County, Juekong and Yankong reconsidered Junbao’s talent. Juekong acknowledged that he might be a supreme genius and bitterly regretted losing him—especially because Junbao had subsequently adopted Daoist robes. His agitation nearly caused Qi deviation, prompting Yankong to steady him with True Qi 21.
Yankong proposed reclaiming Junbao by insisting that his unexplained martial arts belonged to Shaolin and demanding their return to the Scripture Pavilion. Juekong enthusiastically accepted the plan, confident that Shaolin’s prestige would outweigh Junbao’s denials 21.
Public Confrontation
Juekong attended Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao’s battle against the Wang Family. Before the fighting began, he worried whether the two could win; Yankong assured him that they could 23.
After the Wang Family’s defeat, Juekong initially left negotiations to Yankong because he knew he was poor with words. Junbao’s argument that Buddhism ultimately led to the Dao provoked him into interrupting with accusations of stolen martial arts. This disrupted Yankong’s response and gave Junbao the opening to explain the origins of his techniques—exactly the reaction Junbao had intended to provoke 25.
Junbao explained how he and Qingyuan created martial arts together, then submitted the Purple Firmament Thunder Ultimate Sword Technique and Nine Yang Palm manuals for public inspection. The assembled experts examined them, and Chu Tianxing explicitly declared that they had nothing to do with Shaolin. Juekong nevertheless continued claiming that the techniques were stolen 26.
Qi Deviation and Defeat
Realizing that Junbao truly could create martial arts intensified Juekong’s self-reproach. Convinced that he had cost Shaolin an irreplaceable opportunity, he succumbed to his inner demon and resolved to destroy the genius he could not reclaim. Yankong attempted to suppress his condition, but Juekong broke free and attacked Qingyuan and Junbao 26.
The two evaded his finger attacks and countered his projected palm strikes before Chen Xugu intervened. Juekong immediately attacked the Pure Yang Daoist Chief as well, unleashing several Shaolin techniques. Chen neutralized his assault with a single sword stroke and remained on the defensive while Juekong exhausted his True Qi. Chen’s subsequent dismissal of his strength made him cough blood 26 27.
Yankong supported Juekong and led the Shaolin contingent away without challenging Chen further. Later, Shaolin reportedly closed its gates for three months. Junbao guessed that the closure concerned Juekong’s descent into demonic cultivation, but this explanation was not confirmed 27 31.
Appearance
- Bald head: Described as gleaming; he rubs it in frustration while regretting Junbao’s expulsion 21.
- Agitated expression: His eyes become bloodshot as his internal power falls into disorder, then completely red during the public confrontation 21 26.
Personality
Juekong is impatient, rigid, and easily angered. Although aware of his limitations in debate, he repeatedly speaks impulsively once provoked. Junbao understands this weakness well enough to deliberately exploit it, turning Juekong’s attempted assistance into a hindrance to Yankong 21 25.
His loyalty to Shaolin is bound up with its prestige and rivalry with Daoism. He regards Junbao’s departure as a personal failure and finds his adoption of Daoist robes especially intolerable. That remorse does not lead him to respect Junbao’s independence: he embraces Yankong’s plan to claim the new martial arts and eventually turns to violence when reclamation becomes impossible 21 26.
