| Eighth-Rank Realm | 42 45 | Gathered internal force into his dantian on the first morning of internal cultivation. The initial account describes sensing warm currents within three to five breaths; Yun Qingqiu’s later report records his breakthrough at three breaths. |
Background
Liu Sidao is the son of Liu Sandao, a fifth-rank martial artist and Phoenix Cry City’s chief constable. His father taught him some martial arts before he entered the academy. He also visited the government office and watched his father catch thieves, giving him more experience of people and their motives than many of his classmates 19 21 42.
At his previous school, Liu Sidao had been a “little tyrant,” and teachers regularly summoned his parents. After seeing Tianyang Sect’s recruitment advertisements, he asked to try martial arts instead of academic study. He hoped to become an Upper Three Ranks expert and bring honor to his ancestors; his father agreed, attracted by the academy’s benefits 19 47.
Appearance
- A handsome young boy with a small build 30 37.
- Frequently maintains a straight posture and a steady, unflustered expression when confronting other students 30.
- Wears the academy uniform, whose jacket pockets he casually puts his hands into before his match with Feng Xin 35.
Personality
Liu Sidao is outgoing, self-assured, and unusually composed for his age. On entering the academy, he introduces himself to the other children and offers to help anyone with problems. He answers Yin Tianqi’s boasting without losing his temper, attracting Lu Guying’s attention as a possible future class monitor 21.
His loyalty extends beyond his immediate friends. Although he repeatedly fights Yin Tianqi, he defends him against another class and distinguishes their personal quarrels from outside interference. He also openly pledges to defend the academy against those who repay its kindness with ingratitude 24 26.
He combines practical judgment with a mischievous streak. He recognizes Liu Che’s desire to dominate rather than cooperate, questions romantic choices that unnecessarily endanger others, and cheekily credits Lu Guying’s teaching when reprimanded for fighting dirty 25 42 50.
Abilities & Skills
Combat Adaptation and Grappling
Liu Sidao excels at exploiting openings rather than relying on brute strength. Zhang Qingyuan recognizes his fighting talent after he holds his own against four students before Xiao Yan joins the fight 25.
- Throws and counters: Catches opponents’ kicks and converts them into throws, defeating Feng Xin and Zhang Xiaohua this way 35 36.
- Footwork and anticipation: Avoids Sun Xiaohu’s stronger attacks while targeting his lower body and joints 36.
- Restraints: Forces Sun Xiaohu to surrender with a chokehold after a leg sweep 36.
- Feints: Deliberately exposes an opening against Ma Shou, then redirects his attack into a trip and ground pin 36.
- Knife-hand strikes: Attacks the transitions in Lin Pingzhi’s sword forms and disarms him with a strike to the wrist 36.
Martial Comprehension
His early familiarity with martial arts helps him learn faster than students without prior training. By the end of the foundational stage, his comprehension clearly distinguishes him from ordinary learners 25 38.
- Can remember instruction after one explanation and apply it after one practice 38.
- Draws further applications from a single example 38.
- Gives Feng Xin practical advice about avoiding large attacking movements against a faster opponent 35.
Internal Cultivation
Liu Sidao demonstrates exceptional aptitude and concentration when internal cultivation begins 42 45.
- Senses Qi and gathers internal force into his dantian almost immediately 42 45.
- Keeps his thoughts calm throughout the process and resumes meditation after his initial success 42.
- Is confirmed at the Eighth-Rank Realm; no later individual breakthrough is documented in the supplied chapters 45.
Leadership and Judgment
His friendships, confidence, and ability to read situations make him a leading figure among the students 26 30 52.
- Builds a following through personal connections rather than Yin Tianqi’s financial resources 26.
- Helps unite Class One after reconciling with Yin Tianqi 30.
- Assigns roles and calls for Ma Shou’s assistance when Liu Che brings a larger force against his class 30.
- Leads the study-tour students around the Bright Moon Sect as their temporary class monitor 52.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Enrollment and Class Rivalries
Liu Sidao enters the academy with some martial grounding and quickly becomes one of Class One’s central figures. His rivalry with Yin Tianqi produces a first-day brawl after Yin insults Murong Xue. Liu Sidao intervenes by throwing a stone, and Lu Guying punishes the boys with additional drills 21 25.
The rivalry softens when Liu Sidao helps defend Yin Tianqi against Liu Che and the Eight Vajras. With Class One increasingly united, Liu Sidao allies with Ma Shou to resist Liu Che’s attempt to absorb them into the Heavenly Dragon Association. Their confrontation escalates into a brawl involving hundreds of students 26 30.
Three-Month Assessment
Before the assessment, Zhang Qingyuan identifies Liu Sidao as the academy’s top-performing student. He then wins the tournament through precise counters, mobility, and grappling 35 36.
| Opponent | Result | Decisive Action |
|---|---|---|
| Feng Xin | Victory | Catches a whipping kick and throws him; deliberately allows an exchange first to preserve Feng Xin’s dignity 35. |
| Zhang Xiaohua | Victory | Catches a kick and throws him off the platform within three moves 36. |
| Lin Pingzhi | Victory | Disarms him with a knife-hand strike after fifteen exchanges 36. |
| Sun Xiaohu | Semifinal victory | Evades his attacks, sweeps his leg, and secures a chokehold 36. |
| Ma Shou | Final victory | Baits an attack after fifty exchanges, trips him, and pins him with a knife-hand poised over his throat 36. |
Selection for the Tianyang Sect
Liu Sidao’s rapid internal-cultivation breakthrough confirms that his talent extends beyond fighting technique. Zhang Qingyuan tells Ma Shou that he intends to select Liu Sidao as well, then visits Liu Sandao to obtain parental consent. Liu Sidao also agrees to join the sect 42 45 46 47.
Study Tour and Xiao Yan’s Fall
Chosen among ten students for the study tour, Liu Sidao carries an academy-issued saber and helps lead his companions. During the encounter involving Han Yumo and the injured swordsman, he recognizes the danger of remaining near them and argues that temporary separation would protect both people better than reckless romantic devotion 48 50.
At the Bright Moon Sect, visiting disciples mistakenly challenge Xiao Yan as the academy’s second-year chief. Liu Sidao accepts on the group’s behalf after Xiao Yan agrees, but warns him to concede if necessary. When Xiao Yan is knocked over a cliff, Liu Sidao joins the others in seeking help 52.
Moved by Zhang Qingyuan’s repeated dives into the freezing pool, Liu Sidao vows to remain until Xiao Yan is found. After Xiao Yan’s rescue, he anxiously asks Di Yunjie about his condition 54 56.
