Background and History

Earth and Three Purities Temple

Zhang Qingyuan retains memories of life on modern Earth, where he lived paycheck to paycheck and enjoyed martial-arts fiction. His familiarity with wuxia stories supplies ideas and comparisons, but he recognizes that remembering martial theories is not the same as being able to apply them 2 8.

In his new life, he studies under Sun Daoqian at Three Purities Temple in Qinghe County. His master devotes himself to researching martial arts rather than building a reputation, while the temple survives on worshippers’ offerings. After his master dies, Zhang Qingyuan leaves to wander the jianghu 1 16 37.

His long-term ambition is to establish a Daoist sect, preserve his martial arts in written manuals, and take disciples. He also hopes to find Dao companions and enjoy the scenery rather than devote his entire life to training 8 30 45.

Chen Ling’er and the Black Lotus Sect

Ten days after leaving the temple, Zhang Qingyuan has nearly exhausted his savings. While sheltering from a storm in a ruined temple, he meets the wounded Chen Ling’er, defuses her attacks, and supplies wound medicine. Learning that her attacker carries a hundred-tael bounty immediately interests him 2 3.

His pursuit of money becomes a rescue mission when he discovers seven women imprisoned as human cauldrons by the Black Lotus Sect. Enraged by their abuse and the deaths of two earlier captives, he destroys the branch with Chen Ling’er. He brutally punishes its Sacred Envoy, though he later finds his own methods disturbing 5 6 7.

He gives Chen Ling’er three hundred taels from the government reward while retaining the branch’s much larger treasure hoard. After befriending Hidden Sword Manor’s young master, Li Xiaodong, he encourages the pair to travel together to Nanyang Commandery and leaves for Taiyin Dao Palace 7.

Li Qiuran and the Sincere Daoist Reputation

Zhang Qingyuan’s first attempts to approach Li Qiuran provoke a fight, during which he experiences a martial enlightenment. Their confrontation gives way to cooperation when Cloud Dust Manor surrounds them and demands her Heavenly Yin Mysterious Maiden Art. He kills the attacking disciples and blocks the manor lord’s escape, allowing Li Qiuran to behead him 9 10 11.

After learning about the destruction of Li Qiuran’s sect, he acknowledges that staying beside her means facing both treasure-seekers and the perpetrators of the massacre. She nevertheless leaves quietly the following morning 12 13.

Ling Yanqiu later confronts him to avenge the manor lord, his brother-in-law. Zhang Qingyuan admits his involvement, kills Ling Yanqiu and his five companions after they attack, and asks witnesses to report the circumstances accurately. His unusually courteous explanations earn him the unwanted nickname Sincere Daoist 14 15.

Taiyin Dao Palace

At Taiyin Dao Palace, Zhang Qingyuan exchanges more than a hundred sword moves with Wu Guanghui before the elders stop their evenly matched duel. Welcomed as a guest, he spends half a month studying scriptures and seeking explanations from the palace’s Daoists, then enters three months of seclusion 18 19 20.

He emerges with an expanded internal art and the newly created Mystic Yin Manual. Sharing the manual secures the palace’s friendship without requiring him to abandon his independent lineage. Daoist Master Bright Moon also gives him the treasured sword Scorching Night, which he renames Questioning Heart 20 21 22 24.

Meanwhile, someone falsely accuses him of exterminating Cloud Dust Manor and the Seven Luminaries Sword Sect. A two-thousand-tael bounty brings repeated attacks, prompting him to head toward Taihang Mountain to investigate and clear his name 22 24 25.

Kaifeng Famine and the Prince of Yu

Passing through famine-stricken Kaifeng Prefecture, Zhang Qingyuan sells the Black Lotus Sect’s valuables for 4,800 taels and purchases grain for relief. His inability to save a starving child leads him to resolve to pursue criminal bounties to fund further aid 27.

He helps the merchant Tang Jie recover stolen grain, joining forces with the imperial relative initially introduced as Zhu Zizhao and his guards. With Old Seven’s assistance, he defeats Listening Wind Stronghold’s forces and the Dragon Lord, then extracts the confession that Prefect Liu Xiangquan backs Dragon Gate 28 29 30 32 33.

At Dingfeng County’s relief station, he helps care for fifty thousand victims and prevent disease. Tang Zhong’s exaggerated account of his victory spreads the belief that he is Great Emperor Zhenwu reincarnated—a rumor Zhang Qingyuan fears will attract powerful enemies 36.

Li Qiuran returns to warn him that Liu Xiangquan ultimately serves the Prince of Yu, who is preparing rebellion with the Heavenly Principle Sect. Zhang Qingyuan and Li Qiuran defeat the fighters sent against them through a combination of traps, footwork, Taiji, and swordsmanship 38 39 41 42.

Once his imperial friend is identified as the ninth prince, Zhu Qizhao, Zhang Qingyuan helps him oppose the rebellion for the disaster victims’ sake, not out of loyalty to the imperial family. He proposes gathering refugees with grain, acquiring weapons from bandit strongholds, and holding out for General Huang’s support. He rejects an offer to become Imperial Preceptor, preferring to found his own sect 43 44 45.

Following Zhu Qizhao’s enthronement, Zhang Qingyuan receives the imperial title Dao Lord of True Martiality, with a twenty-thousand-tael allocation. He then uses the Listening Tide Pavilion’s intelligence to pursue the truth behind the massacre attributed to him 47 49.

Return Toward Taihang Mountain

Xiahou Jue’s confession reveals that another participant in the destruction of Li Qiuran’s pavilion is cultivating at Shaolin. Zhang Qingyuan persuades her not to rush into revenge and promises to help once he reaches the Supreme Peak. They resume their journey toward Taihang Mountain to confront the Star River Sect 48.

Yang Chen, the Starlight Sword Master, intercepts them to challenge Zhang Qingyuan for ranking and reputation. Although initially outmatched by Starlight Swordsmanship, Zhang Qingyuan studies its repetitions, deliberately exposes an opening, and uses his full movement speed to strike from behind. After Yang Chen dies, he buries him and gives the Starlight Sword to Li Qiuran 49 50.

Appearance

  • Build and face: Young, tall, and straight-backed, with a handsome face and phoenix eyes 8 13 24.
  • Clothing: Commonly wears blue-and-white Daoist robes 6 11 16.
  • Bearing: Combines Daoist grace with a languid, rakish manner likened to an unrestrained young nobleman 8.
  • After seclusion: Emerges with matted hair, a greasy face, and a beard about five centimeters long; promptly cleans himself before meeting the elders 20.

Personality

Zhang Qingyuan is playful, talkative, flirtatious, and frequently irreverent. His leisurely manners and teasing often conceal serious intentions, especially when approaching Li Qiuran. He admits that this disposition predates his transmigration rather than resulting from Daoist cultivation 9 12 30 48.

His concern with money does not prevent generosity. The suffering in Kaifeng moves him to spend his accumulated valuables on food, undertake dangerous grain-recovery work, and involve himself in political conflict to protect civilians. He explicitly distinguishes helping the people from serving the imperial family 27 29 44.

He prefers to leave others alone if they leave him alone, but retaliates decisively when attacked. He can spare would-be killers and offer them opportunities to withdraw, yet also employs torture and humiliating attacks against abusers or exploiters. His reaction to the Sacred Envoy’s punishment shows that he is not entirely comfortable with his own cruelty 6 7 15 24 25 33.

Despite his confidence, he values survival over martial-world notions of honor. He openly prioritizes escape techniques, prepares traps against dangerous opponents, and recognizes the limits of his political expertise. He also understands that exceptional talent cannot replace cultivation of one’s state of mind 16 41 45 50.

Abilities & Skills

Zhang Sanfeng Talent Template

  • Grants exceptional comprehension, martial creativity, control of internal power, and reactions in combat 1 3.
  • Allows him to integrate and improve inherited techniques rather than merely reproduce them 6 8.
  • Does not eliminate the need for practical application, enlightenment, or mental discipline 8 16.

Yin-Yang Limitless Art

  • Created by improving Sun Daoqian’s Three Pure Ones Divine Instruction; remains his principal cultivation method 8 21.
  • Produces two interlinked streams of Yin and Yang True Qi, supporting rapid replenishment during sustained fighting 20 32.
  • Its cultivation efficiency is described as one year equaling five years for another practitioner 32.
  • His deeper understanding of Yin than Yang creates an imbalance; by the Kaifeng confrontation, the art is described as badly out of balance 20 40.

Mystic Yin Manual

  • An independent internal cultivation method developed from Taiyin principles during his three-month seclusion 19 20.
  • Li Guangye judges it as profound as Taiyin Dao Palace’s Taiyin Radiant Light Cultivation Method 20.
  • Contains an internal cultivation method rather than a complete set of accompanying combat techniques 20.
  • Shared with Taiyin Dao Palace; inferior to the Yin-Yang Limitless Art for Zhang Qingyuan’s own needs 21.

Swordsmanship

Sword Art Applications
Jade Purity Golden Immortal Sword Used defensively against Li Qiuran while withholding killing moves, and later against groups of bandits 10 32.
Thirteen Swords of Pure Light Employs flowing attacks from difficult angles; used against Wu Guanghui 18.
Twelve Immortal-Slaying Forms Sun Daoqian’s killing-oriented sword art, emphasizing speed, decisive strikes, and lethal Sword Qi rather than flourishes 11 31.
  • Masters and integrates all three inherited sword arts 8.
  • Wins against Yang Chen through observation, deception, and footwork despite acknowledging Starlight Swordsmanship’s superior quality 49 50.
  • Proposes five philosophical realms of swordsmanship, culminating in “having no sword surpasses having a sword”; this is his explanation to companions, not a documented cultivation rank 7.

Jade Purity Lotus Step and Ascending the Clouds

  • Jade Purity Lotus Step: Unpredictable close-range movement that creates afterimages, evades encirclement, and enables attacks from behind 6 11 32.
  • Ascending the Clouds: A lightness art developed from Treading on Geese and Chasing Snow, particularly effective for high leaps 8 41.
  • Considers these his best-trained martial arts because they preserve his ability to escape stronger enemies 50.
  • Ascending the Clouds is not supernatural flight; he must eventually descend 41.

Taiji Fist and Yin-Yang Unrivaled Palm

  • Taiji Fist: Emphasizes striking after an opponent yet gaining the advantage, overcoming hardness with softness, and borrowing force to counter force 26.
  • Can fight using air movement and externally released True Qi to sense opponents while keeping his eyes almost closed 26.
  • Redirects Daoist Qian’s Blazing Sun Palm into Daoist Yang 42.
  • Yin-Yang Unrivaled Palm: Forms a True Qi Taiji diagram that can smash, shake, stamp, or serve as a shield; blocks throwing knives and a horsetail whisk’s strands 24 25 42.

Practical Knowledge and Tactics

  • Relief and sanitation: Applies modern knowledge of microorganisms and disease prevention while distributing food and treating patients 36 39.
  • Traps: Uses wooden spikes, heavy logs, and poisonous smoke that temporarily deprives enemies of internal power to counter body-hardening practitioners 39 41.
  • Observation: Exposes disguised bounty hunters by noticing that a supposedly ordinary pregnant woman has kept pace with his day-long horseback journey 25.
  • Daoist practice: Reads scriptures and recites the Calming Incantation to settle himself after killing 12 15.
  • Divination: Has read the Eight Trigrams and Book of Changes, but has not formally trained as a fortune-teller 13.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Questioning Heart Sword — Originally Scorching Night, a sharp black-iron sword won by Daoist Master Bright Moon from the Demon Venerable twenty years earlier. Zhang Qingyuan renames it after receiving it 22 24.

Relationships
