Background / History

Saize Village Expedition

Cahir accompanied the academy’s expedition to Saize Village under senior sorcerer Alfred Raven, known as Red. During the nighttime monster attack, he worked alongside Yennefer and Red to restrain the smaller Giant Ghouls while Yavi fought their leader. Afterward, Red ordered him to maintain the binding vines while the camp treated its wounded and reinforced its defenses 104 106 118.

The following morning, Cahir joined the return to the village church. Like the other mages, he showed newfound respect for Yavi after witnessing the witcher’s fighting ability. Red assigned him to guard the rear and keep the entrance clear; during the search, he examined the side-aisle walls with another young mage 108 109.

Collapse and Takeover

After the priest’s corpse attacked Ailiya, Cahir suddenly began choking and convulsing. He clawed bloody marks into his neck before becoming rigid and collapsing. Red’s examination found normal bodily functions and no toxin, magical corrosion, or curse. Yavi’s Witcher Senses and medallion likewise detected nothing abnormal 109.

Red ended the mission, and two mages carried Cahir away on a makeshift stretcher. While the party prepared to teleport back to the academy, he abruptly rose. A sorceress approached to help him, but his right hand transformed into a black bone blade and pierced her throat. The substance occupying him then consumed her body 109 110.

Yavi identified the attacker as something other than Cahir. Speaking through Cahir’s voice, the creature explained that it had previously been trapped in the priest’s body. According to its account, the Ghouls and Bruxae surrounding the village had been containing it; killing those monsters had opened its prison 110.

Battle in the Ruins

The parasite attacked the expedition using Cahir’s body and the memories of its victims. Although Yavi outmatched it in swordsmanship, its autonomous black armor compensated for its poor technique. It absorbed two more sorceresses during the battle, becoming strong enough to withstand a joint assault by Yavi and Red 111 112 113.

When the teleportation circle neared completion, the creature concentrated its armor into a massive whip. The attack injured Yavi, broke Red’s arm, and shattered his broadsword. Yavi nevertheless delayed it long enough for Red, Yennefer, Ailiya, and the surviving apprentices to escape 114.

Destruction of the Host Body

Left alone with the creature, Yavi drew Demon Breaker. Unlike the expedition’s spells and ordinary weapons, the sword burned and disintegrated the black substance. Yavi overwhelmed the parasite and cut Cahir’s body in half at the waist 115 116.

The substance survived the bisection, dividing into two independently moving portions before reuniting around Yavi as a cocoon. It began invading his body, prompting the Tiger Talisman’s power of balance to activate as he lost consciousness 116.

At the subsequent academy hearing, Tissaia reported that the black substance had disappeared without a trace. Sicco Jett proposed that Yavi’s Chaos Magic had rejected or devoured it, but this remained an explanation offered by the tribunal rather than a confirmed account of its destruction 118.

Appearance

  • Before the takeover: Wears mage’s robes and carries equipment for the church expedition; no hair color, eye color, or other distinguishing natural features are specified 108 109.
  • Occupied body: Covered in flowing black sludge that follows Cahir’s facial contours, leaving hollow eyes without visible pupils or irises exposed 110.
  • Beneath the substance: His skin becomes pale and shriveled, with dense black veins across his torso and limbs 114 115.

Personality

Cahir shows respect toward Yavi after the witcher’s battle against the Giant Ghoul leader. His actions otherwise establish him primarily as a cooperative member of Red’s expedition, carrying out restraint, guard, and search duties 104 106 108 109.

The cruelty displayed after his collapse belongs to the parasite, not Cahir. It treats people as food, mocks the expedition for freeing it, and takes pleasure in its victims’ vulnerability. Its confidence turns to fear when it recognizes the academy’s potential response and later encounters Demon Breaker 110 111 114 115.

Abilities & Skills

Nature Magic

Cahir specializes in nature magic and uses an ancient druidic incantation to animate vegetation 104.

  • Summons two thorn-covered vines, each as thick as a grown man’s waist.
  • Directs them around a Giant Ghoul’s hind-leg joints to drag it backward and bind it to a tree.
  • Maintains the restraints after the main battle 104 106.

Parasitic Absorption

The creature occupying Cahir consumes bodies, magic, life force, and memories through its black substance 110 111 112.

  • Dissolves and absorbs a slain sorceress through direct contact.
  • Uses droplets that penetrate clothing and skin to seize additional victims.
  • Learns victims’ preferred spells, casting habits, and mana limits.
  • Grows stronger after feeding and considers replacing Cahir with Yavi as a more suitable host 110 111 112 114.

Living Armor and Weapon Formation

The black substance acts independently, defending the host and counterattacking without skilled swordplay 111 113.

  • Forms bone blades, round shields, spikes, tentacles, whip blades, and a massive sweeping whip.
  • Fires droplets that can change direction and return to the main body.
  • Automatically thickens at threatened points and rapidly closes shallow damage.
  • Resists the expedition’s fire, ice, lightning, and arcane attacks.
  • Continues moving in separate portions after Cahir’s body is bisected 111 113 114 116.

Physical Enhancement

The parasite gives Cahir’s body strength and speed far beyond his original abilities 111 112.

  • Attacks faster than the Giant Ghoul leader and trades blows with Yavi while the Rabbit and Ox Talismans are active.
  • Remains inferior to Yavi in swordsmanship, relying heavily on automatic defenses.
  • Exhausts its host through prolonged combat and large-scale attacks 111 112 113 114.

Weaknesses

  • Moonlight Cursed Blade: Can penetrate the black armor and reach Cahir’s underlying flesh 111 113.
  • Simultaneous attacks: Force the substance to redistribute itself between threatened areas, creating openings 113 114.
  • Demon Breaker: Burns and disintegrates the substance on contact, leaving wounds it cannot repair. Yavi suspects the sword’s dimeritium construction explains this effect 115 116.
  • Host limitations: Cahir’s limited close-combat experience and declining bodily stamina remain vulnerabilities despite the parasite’s enhancements 112 113 114.

Relationships

  • Alfred Raven / Red — Expedition commander. Assigns Cahir combat and guard duties, examines him after his collapse, and later fights the parasite occupying his body 106 108 109 112.
  • Yavi — Expedition companion whom Cahir comes to respect. Yavi recognizes the takeover, protects the survivors, and ultimately destroys Cahir’s occupied body 108 110 114 116.
  • Yennefer — Fellow expedition mage. Helps restrain the Giant Ghouls alongside Cahir and calls for assistance when he begins choking 104 109.
