| Name | Vesemir (维瑟米尔) |
| Alias(es) | “The School of the Wolf’s living fossil,” a nickname used by some apprentices 17 |
| Species/Race | Witcher 1 17 |
| Gender | Male 1 |
| Affiliation | School of the Wolf; Kaer Morhen 1 17 |
| Occupation/Role | Witcher swordmaster, apprentice instructor, and current head of Kaer Morhen’s household 1 17 |
| Status | Alive; remains active as a monster hunter and participates in Kaer Morhen’s restoration 162 191 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1, “Witcher Apprentice Arwen” 1 |
Appearance
Vesemir is tall and broad, with an aged face and a powerful build 1.
- Hair: Gray-white, combed back 1.
- Eyes: Amber with slit pupils; his stare intimidates the apprentices 1 4.
- Equipment: Carries two swords on his back and wears a wolf-head medallion 1 17.
- Hands: Rough, broad palms and thick but nimble fingers; wears silver-studded gloves during the medallion ceremony 43.
- Voice and movement: Speaks in a deep, resonant voice and walks almost silently despite his size 1 7.
Personality
Vesemir is a demanding instructor who uses danger, discipline, and pointed criticism to expose his apprentices’ weaknesses. He considers knowledge and judgment more important than eagerness to fight, and he punishes Aiken for blaming an injured companion rather than accepting responsibility 2 4.
Cooperation is central to his teaching. He rejects the idea that witchers must be solitary hunters and teaches that swordsmanship exists to save lives, including those of one’s companions. Arwen’s willingness to share knowledge and unite the other apprentices earns his particular approval 3 4 32.
His sternness conceals deep concern for the children in his care. He worries throughout the Trial of Dreams and hopes rigorous preparation will prevent further deaths. When Arwen disappears underwater, Vesemir sets the trial’s rules aside and enters the river to help find him 20 22.
He is not wholly bound by established methods. Watching Arwen repeatedly shield himself with Quen and evade Geralt’s attacks makes Vesemir reassess the Sign’s tactical importance 28. Outside training, he tells stories over meals, jokes with Eskel, and takes pride in the apprentices’ graduation 6 32 43.
His attachment to neutrality is tested by the unresolved massacre of his companions. Although he once advises Arwen to leave old pain in the past, he has spent decades preparing dimeritium for both Kaer Morhen’s defense and eventual revenge. During the confrontation with Atamont, he openly rejects neutrality; afterward, he acknowledges that killing the mage violated the code he had taught his pupils 46 100 101 116.
Despite his bitterness, protecting humanity remains a genuine principle rather than a bargaining tool. When Luitpold requests help against rampaging golems, Vesemir accepts without exploiting the emergency to demand concessions 103. He is also capable of admitting fault: in reconciling with Holt, he accepts most of the blame for their old quarrel and welcomes him back to Kaer Morhen 118.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and Combat Instruction
Vesemir is Kaer Morhen’s witcher swordmaster and oversees the apprentices’ progression from basic swordsmanship to the School of the Wolf Sword Dance 1 13.
- Evaluates technique, footwork, composure, and teamwork during live-monster exercises 2 3 5.
- Operates the Comb’s windmill and pendulum mechanisms, increasing the difficulty to challenge Arwen’s developing skills 11 12.
- Teaches that witchers must combine sight, hearing, and the sensation of moving air to detect attacks 12.
- Defines the Wolf Sword Dance as a precise-footwork technique designed for monsters and multiple opponents 13.
- His approach strongly influences both Geralt and Arwen, particularly a diagonal slash following a pivoting step. Holt recognizes its destructive power but criticizes their reliance on familiar patterns and their comparative lack of finesse 94.
- Defeats Grayson’s reanimated witcher body after a clash of Signs, closing in and killing his former companion with his sword 100.
- Coordinates the witchers against the rampaging golems at Crow Ridge, using Aard to drive one back before precisely beheading it 106.
Monster Knowledge
Vesemir teaches practical monster lore alongside combat, including weaknesses, behavior, and the conditions that make an encounter survivable 2 5 6.
- Explains why a dehydrated drowner can be killed with a pitchfork while a healthy one remains dangerous to armed apprentices 2.
- Uses a tragic werewolf story to teach the apprentices about the werewolf curse 6.
- Prepares the apprentices for the drowners, cyclops, and trolls along the Trial of the Mountains route 26.
- Suggests that a second mutation affecting Arwen’s lungs could explain his survival underwater for nearly ten minutes; this is Vesemir’s hypothesis, not knowledge of Arwen’s mutagens 23.
- Knows of a basilisk prowling around Kaer Morhen and proposes it as practical hunting experience for the young witchers returning with him 119.
Alchemy and Medical Treatment
Vesemir teaches alchemy and can treat serious injuries, although Viris considers his herbal instruction considerably weaker than his swordsmanship teaching 5 7 8.
- Treats Blyde’s claw wounds with a potion administered both orally and directly to the injury 4.
- Diagnoses Aiken’s blood loss and fractures, then uses Black Gull, Golden Oriole, bone-setting, and ointment to treat him 42.
- Generally forbids Black Gull except for wounds painful enough to require its effects 42.
- Recognizes residual healing magic through examination and his medallion’s reaction 42.
- Uses the School of the Wolf’s last bottle of a Sign-strengthening potion preserved from the days of the Order of Witchers during his battle with Grayson 100.
Signs, Meditation, and Magical Awareness
Vesemir teaches the meditation method needed to cast Signs and supervises the magical preparation of newly qualified witchers 26 43.
- Casts Igni to ignite the four ceremonial bonfires at the Circle of Elements 43.
- Prepares wolf-head medallions to charge at the Circle 43.
- Explains that magical convergence points can replenish depleted magic when meditation is unavailable 43.
- Notices his medallion’s faint reaction to Viris despite the apparent suppression of its movement 17.
- Casts a potion-enhanced Aard against Grayson’s blue-green whirlwind. The colliding shock waves leave the ground covered in cracks 100.
- Uses Quen when the knights threaten to arrest the witchers and prepares to resist alongside his companions 101.
- Leads a coordinated defense at Crow Ridge in which the seven witchers overlap Aard, Yrden, Igni, Quen, and Axii, repeatedly replacing shattered protective shields 106.
Witcher Senses and Limitations
Vesemir moves silently and uses potions to enhance his perception, but his senses do not eliminate environmental disadvantages 7 22.
- A potion allows him to see exceptionally clearly in darkness, producing black veins around his eyes 22.
- Even enhanced vision cannot penetrate the river’s murky water when he searches for Arwen 22.
- Like other witchers, he is not adept at underwater combat 22.
Anti-Mage Preparation
Vesemir spends decades accumulating dimeritium to prevent another attack on Kaer Morhen and prepare for revenge against those responsible for its destruction 100.
- Uses an alchemical dimeritium mist against Atamont. The mage states that his limited exposure slows his spellcasting rather than completely disabling it 99.
- Throws a dimeritium bomb that disrupts a witcher golem, allowing Geralt to behead it 100.
- Coordinates with the other witchers as their bombs fill the battlefield with dimeritium smoke, suppressing Atamont’s magic and disrupting the golems’ external magical signals 100.
Power Progression
| Stage | Demonstrated Capability or Development | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Established witcher swordmaster | Veteran combatant and instructor | Already serves as Kaer Morhen’s swordmaster when Arwen’s story begins; no numerical skill levels are given for Vesemir 1 13. |
| Trial of Dreams intervention | Potion-enhanced night vision | Uses enhanced sight while searching for Arwen, though the river’s murk still prevents him from seeing underwater 22. |
| Observation of Arwen’s tactics | Reassessment of Quen | Recognizes the effectiveness of combining repeated shielding with evasive movement and raises his estimation of Quen’s tactical value 28. |
| Medallion ceremony | Demonstrated ceremonial Sign use | Casts Igni to light the Circle of Elements’ bonfires and supervises the charging of the graduates’ medallions 43. |
| Confrontation with Atamont | Dimeritium warfare and temporary Sign enhancement | Deploys preparations accumulated over decades and consumes a preserved Sign-strengthening potion before defeating Grayson 99 100. |
| Battle at Crow Ridge | Coordinated combat against golems | Leads the seven witchers in an overlapping Sign defense and combines Aard with a precise decapitating strike 106. |
Equipment
- Two swords: Carried on his back; his personal silver sword was made by a gnome he encountered by chance 1 45.
- Wolf-head medallion: Reacts to nearby magic and vibrates at the active Circle of Elements 17 43.
- Potions and medical supplies: Uses healing preparations and obtains Black Gull, Golden Oriole, bandages, and comfrey ointment for emergency treatment 4 42.
- Kaer Morhen keys: Holds the library key and distributes room keys to the newly qualified witchers 26 44.
- Dimeritium preparations: Accumulates dimeritium over decades and uses alchemical mist and bombs during the confrontation with Atamont 99 100.
- Order-era Sign-strengthening potion: Consumes the School of the Wolf’s last surviving bottle during his fight with Grayson; it is a temporary enhancement rather than a confirmed permanent advancement 100.
History
The Kaer Morhen Massacre
Vesemir was away on a contract in the south when a mob massacred Kaer Morhen’s witchers and apprentices. He later explains that the pamphlet Monstrum, or a Description of the Witcher helped incite hostility, but that a mob alone could not have overcome the fortress: a mysterious mage led the attackers. Vesemir identifies the massacre as the reason mages are unwelcome at Kaer Morhen 46.
His old friend Bernjof died in the attack. Bernjof’s large, self-forged greatsword remained in the armory until Arwen selected it before leaving the fortress 45 46.
Holt later dates the massacre to 1194. After returning from the south, Vesemir learns what happened from the Temple of Melitele’s high priestess and confronts Holt, who escaped the attack. He condemns Holt for abandoning their tenets and failing to defend Kaer Morhen, fights him, and threatens to expel him from the School of the Wolf. Holt throws down his medallion and leaves 85.
Although Vesemir subsequently speaks of leaving the past behind, he spends decades preparing dimeritium to defend Kaer Morhen and avenge its destruction. The mage responsible is eventually identified as Atamont 85 100.
Claiming Arwen through the Law of Surprise
While seeking work amid the aftermath of war in Kovir, Vesemir encounters the soldier Balin being attacked by ghouls and saves him. He invokes the Law of Surprise as payment, making Arwen Thyssen his Child of Surprise 185.
Arwen subsequently leaves Balin’s household and Kovir with Vesemir to become a witcher apprentice. Vesemir later tells him about events in Kovir and the death of his mother in the royal capital 185.
Training Arwen’s Cohort
Vesemir trained Geralt’s generation before taking responsibility for Arwen and his companions. Geralt remembers Vesemir’s harsh instruction and the loss of the other apprentices from his group, apart from Eskel 4 27.
A month after Arwen’s cohort survives the Trial of the Grasses, Vesemir arranges their first bloodletting exercise against drowners supplied by Geralt. He expects their fear and inadequate weapons to defeat them, but Arwen surprises him by killing a drowner with a training sword. Vesemir subsequently praises Arwen’s performance against four more drowners while still requiring him to complete a reduced running punishment 1 2 4 5.
During windmill training, he pushes Arwen to face three pendulums and advises him to use senses beyond sight. Arwen’s success confirms his readiness for Wolf School swordsmanship, and Vesemir establishes the same windmill qualification for the other apprentices 12 13.
Viris and the White Frost Prophecy
Vesemir permits Viris to assist with the Trial of the Grasses, which six of seven apprentices survive. Nevertheless, he remains wary of her identity and questions why a sorceress who dislikes witchers has stayed at Kaer Morhen for two months 17.
Viris reveals a vision of the White Frost destroying the world, followed by a faceless figure with a silver sword cutting through the frost and restoring life. Vesemir, initially skeptical of apocalyptic prophecies, asks whether the figure could be a witcher. Viris cannot confirm it 17.
Trial of Dreams and Final Preparations
Vesemir oversees the Trial of Dreams, in which hallucinogens force apprentices to confront their fears before fighting monsters until sunrise. He defends the ordeal as preparation for terrifying future opponents, though Viris recognizes his anxiety for the participants 20.
When Arwen is dragged underwater by a drowned dead, Vesemir enters the river to help Geralt search and asks Viris for assistance. Following the trial, he gives the apprentices five days without lessons or training to recover 22 24.
After Arwen resurfaces, Vesemir suggests that a second mutation of his lungs might explain his prolonged survival underwater. He subsequently joins Geralt and Viris in rushing to aid another apprentice cornered by three drowners 23.
In 1228, he teaches the cohort meditation and announces their final trial for shortly after the autumn equinox of 1230. Their schedule initially replaces sleep with meditation three nights a week, with further reductions planned before graduation 26.
Trial of the Mountains
Before the final trial, Vesemir equips the five remaining apprentices with silver swords, potions, necrophage oil, and provisions. Blyde has already died after recklessly confronting a monster; Vesemir tells Eskel that he found the boy too late 31 32.
Vesemir believes Arwen’s strength and leadership could allow all five to pass. During the trial, an Ancient Foglet assumes Vesemir’s appearance and reproduces Wolf School swordsmanship against Old Spearhead; this combatant is an imitation, not Vesemir himself 32 38.
When Horton reports that Arwen and Aiken remain below, Vesemir initially refuses to intervene on the grounds of the trial’s rules. After hearing Old Spearhead roar, however, he sends Eskel down with ogroid blade oil 40.
Arwen returns carrying the injured Aiken and the cyclops’s head. While treating Aiken, Vesemir discovers that Arwen has cast a Healing Spell and recalls Alzur’s ideal of a “perfect witcher”—one combining true magic with chivalry 42.
Graduation and Arwen’s Departure
Vesemir awards all five survivors their wolf-head medallions at the Circle of Elements. His ceremony emphasizes neutrality, protection of humanity, adherence to the witcher code, and self-defense against human attackers. He then allows the graduates to meditate at the active Circle until dawn 43.
Back at Kaer Morhen, he prioritizes their recovery before arranging a celebratory banquet. He helps Arwen choose his swords and offers to rebind the guard of the selected silver sword 44 45.
Before Arwen leaves, Vesemir returns his Thyssen family ring and warns that King Laird of Poviss and King Idi of Kovir are hunting his family. He recommends visiting the Temple of Melitele in Frankenthal. Together with Eskel, he prepares Arwen’s horse, supplies, and one hundred crowns, then sends him away before the other graduates wake 46.
Revenge against Atamont
Vesemir joins the witchers confronting Atamont and his witcher golems. He wounds the mage, dedicating the strike to Bernjof, and demands repayment of the blood debt owed to the School of the Wolf. Atamont recognizes him as a survivor of Kaer Morhen’s destruction 99.
When Atamont recalls his golems and prepares a fiery attack, Vesemir throws a dimeritium bomb. Geralt and the others follow his example, filling the battlefield with smoke that suppresses the mage’s spellcasting and disrupts his constructs 100.
Atamont sends his last golem against Vesemir and flees. The construct is Grayson, Kaer Morhen’s former Signs instructor and Vesemir’s old companion. Using the School’s last Order-era Sign-strengthening potion, Vesemir meets Grayson’s attack with Aard and then kills him with his sword 100.
Vesemir ultimately kills Atamont and openly repudiates neutrality. When Luitpold’s knights arrive and attempt to arrest the witchers, Geralt, Eskel, Aiken, Paul, Horton, and Winston stand beside him, preparing to fight rather than surrender him 101 116.
Luitpold and the Battle at Crow Ridge
Marquis Luitpold offers to seek a fair verdict, ban Monstrum, and restore the witchers’ reputation while implying that he wants their service and one person to answer for Atamont’s death. Vesemir understands the proposal and begins to step forward, but Geralt and Eskel insist that responsibility belongs to all of them. Encouraged by their solidarity, Vesemir challenges the marquis to draw his sword 102.
A report of rampaging golems interrupts the confrontation. Vesemir immediately accepts Luitpold’s monster-hunting contract, affirming that keeping monsters from harming humans is a School of the Wolf principle. He also recognizes the opportunity to advance Arwen’s plan to restore their standing in Kaedwen 102 103.
At Crow Ridge, Vesemir leads the witchers into battle and calls them to regroup when the golems concentrate on them. The seven maintain an overlapping defense of Signs until Luitpold’s knights charge to support them. Together, the witchers and knights destroy the remaining golems. Afterward, Luitpold apologizes for his contempt and offers the witchers his friendship, while the knights salute their courage 106.
Restoration of the School and Reconciliation with Holt
Arwen brings news that King Miodrag has found Atamont guilty of a capital crime, banned Monstrum, and restored the School of the Wolf’s reputation. Vesemir reacts with visible delight and calls to the injured Holt to make sure he has heard 115.
Learning that Arwen has accepted a barony encompassing Kaer Morhen, Vesemir privately challenges him for binding the witchers to Kaedwen despite their commitment to neutrality. Arwen argues that royal protection is necessary to secure their future. Vesemir eventually acknowledges his own breach of the code in killing Atamont and concedes that he has little standing to condemn Arwen 116.
The favorable contract arrangements further reassure him. A ten-year term and a minimum payment of fifty crowns per contract seem acceptable for long-lived witchers and offer the prospect of financing Kaer Morhen’s renovation. Nevertheless, both he and Arwen find Miodrag’s exceptional generosity suspicious 116.
At Holt’s manor, Vesemir resumes his familiar mockery of his former companion, but their hostility has substantially eased. During the banquet, he admits that both were angry during their original quarrel, accepts most of the blame, and tells Holt that he is welcome back at Kaer Morhen at any time. Holt embraces him and cries, completing their reconciliation 117 118.
Return to Kaer Morhen and Later Activity
After the seven fallen heroes’ remains are recovered and placed in coffins, Vesemir plans to return them to Kaer Morhen rather than leave them at Holt’s manor. He insists that the young witchers accompany him and Holt instead of taking the Grey Rock Mountain contract, leaving that job to Arwen. Geralt and Eskel also decide to return 119.
Six years into the School’s search for the missing Arwen, Aiken reports that Vesemir and the others have renovated Kaer Morhen, while Geralt and Eskel are working across Kaedwen 162.
Francesca Findabair later reveals that she secretly visited Kaer Morhen while investigating Arwen’s past. The large quantity of dimeritium around the fortress prevented her infiltration, so she instead followed Vesemir on a hunt. Her account confirms his continued activity and describes him as a ruthless monster hunter 191.
Relationships
- Arwen / Arwin Thyssen — Apprentice whose composure, generosity, and leadership earn Vesemir’s trust. Vesemir oversees his training, recognizes the significance of his true magic, and equips him for departure 5 32 42 46. Arwen is also his Child of Surprise, claimed after Vesemir saves Balin from ghouls in Kovir 185. They later disagree over Arwen’s acceptance of a barony, but Vesemir recognizes the practical value of the arrangements securing the School’s future 115 116.
- Geralt — Former pupil and fellow instructor. Vesemir delegates much of the apprentices’ daily supervision to him and packs his traveling equipment before he leaves Kaer Morhen 27 29. Geralt fights beside him against Atamont’s forces and refuses to let him bear sole responsibility for the mage’s death 100 102.
- Eskel — Former pupil whom Vesemir welcomes home with a bear hug. They oversee the final trial together and prepare Arwen’s departure 31 40 46. Eskel joins Geralt in shielding Vesemir from Luitpold’s demand for an individual culprit 102.
- Viris — Sorceress and temporary collaborator. Vesemir respects her power but questions her motives; she challenges the cruelty of witcher training and shares her White Frost vision with him 17 20.
- Aiken — Apprentice whom Vesemir disciplines for endangering and blaming a companion. He later treats Aiken’s severe injuries after the final trial 4 42. Aiken subsequently fights alongside him against Atamont’s forces and stands with him against the knights 100 101.
- Blyde — Apprentice whose wounds Vesemir treats early in training. Vesemir later finds him dead after a reckless monster encounter 4 32.
- Bernjof — Old friend killed in the Kaer Morhen massacre; the sight of Arwen carrying Bernjof’s greatsword recalls him to Vesemir 46. Vesemir dedicates his strike against Atamont to Bernjof’s memory 99.
- Holt / Preston Holt / Ghost Reendt — Former companion who abandoned Kaer Morhen during the massacre. Vesemir’s condemnation and threat of expulsion lead Holt to discard his medallion and leave the School 85. Their shared struggle against Atamont eases the estrangement, and Vesemir later apologizes and welcomes Holt home 117 118.
- Grayson — Former Kaer Morhen Signs instructor and an old companion who faced life-and-death struggles alongside Vesemir. After Atamont turns his remains into a witcher golem, Vesemir defeats and kills him 100.
- Atamont — Mage responsible for the massacre and the target of Vesemir’s long-prepared revenge. Vesemir confronts and ultimately kills him, knowingly violating his former commitment to neutrality 99 100 116.
- Marquis Luitpold Lindenbrock — Initially threatens the witchers with prosecution and seeks their service. Vesemir nevertheless accepts his emergency contract, and their forces fight together at Crow Ridge, after which Luitpold offers the witchers his friendship 102 103 106.
- Francesca Findabair — Secretly follows Vesemir on a hunt after Kaer Morhen’s dimeritium defenses thwart her attempt to infiltrate the fortress while investigating Arwen 191.
Trivia
- Geralt does not know Vesemir’s exact age. Rumors claim he is older than Kaer Morhen itself, but the claim is not confirmed 13.
- Arwen recognizes Vesemir as one of his favorite characters from The Witcher 3 when he first sees him 1.
- Vesemir’s apparent appearance during the Ancient Foglet’s battle with Old Spearhead is an impersonation and should not be counted among his personal combat feats 38.
- Despite his stern reputation, he allows the apprentices a glass of iced pale ale at the meal following Arwen’s duel with Geralt 29.
