Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Witcher mutations | 2 4 | Before the opening contract, survived the Trial of the Grasses—the only recent apprentice at Kaer Morhen to do so. Trained for eight years under Vesemir. |
| First solo monster kill | 3 | Killed a water hag using Quen, swordsmanship, and Igni while Geralt fought the surrounding drowners. The fight exhausted his stored magic and ruined his apprentice silver sword. |
| Exceptional Axii and magical perception | 9 10 | While using Petri’s Philter, perceived ambient chaos magic and mentally overwhelmed Old Speartip. Geralt confirmed that Witt’s Axii took effect before his own and far exceeded a normal witcher’s response to the potion. |
| Fire-rune enhancement | 11 | Absorbed a fire-element Place of Power beneath the Circle of Elements. Replenished his magic, slightly increased his storage capacity, and gained a forearm rune that slowly absorbed ambient magic. |
| Fully qualified witcher | 10 11 | Completed the Trial of the Mountains and collected his fully charged Wolf medallion after its activation at the Circle of Elements. |
| Fire-infused Aard | 17 | Used his fire rune to add scorching elemental force to Aard, igniting stalks and Stammelford’s dust. The casting caused severe mental pain and disorientation. |
| Controlled fire storage | 26 | Learned to charge and partially drain rune-inscribed crystals, turning them into portable bombs. The practice also sharpened his sensitivity to fire elemental power. |
| Ring-assisted elemental casting | 30 | The Ring of Favor filtered incompatible elements out of his casting. His Quen expanded into a tough circular shield without causing him to lose consciousness. |
| Air-rune enhancement | 48 | Absorbed an air-element Place of Power beneath elven ruins. With the Ring of Favor’s help, calmed its gale and gained an air rune beneath the fire rune on his left forearm. |
Witt requests the advanced Trial of the Grasses to become stronger, but the supplied chapters do not establish that he undergoes it 39.
Background / History
Rebirth and Brokilon
Witt remembers a previous life in which he read the Witcher books and played the games. He initially understands his arrival as rebirth, but has no memories of his current life before age ten 4 5 7.
Vesemir reveals that Witt came from Brokilon. A subsequent dream shows Eithné lifting him from an emerald lake and addressing a mysterious lady, who calls him “the miracle of Brokilon” and directs that he be entrusted to Vesemir. Eithné’s statement that he is “not a creation of this nature” makes Witt question whether he crossed worlds in his original body rather than being reborn 6 7.
His recurring dreams include a frost-covered nightmare that he associates with the White Frost. These dreams became especially frequent during the Trial of the Grasses, but their connection to his ancestry remains unresolved 6.
Life at Kaer Morhen
For eight years, Witt depends on Vesemir for training and survival, coming to regard him as both teacher and father. Geralt, Eskel, and Lambert become his brothers despite sharing no blood with him. His determination to survive the world’s dangers sustains him through training and the painful witcher mutations 2 4 5.
After his first contract, Witt gives his earnings to Vesemir and Eskel. Before leaving Kaer Morhen, he also entrusts his water-hag trophies and Old Speartip’s heart to Vesemir for sale, intending the proceeds to support the old witcher 5 12.
Appearance
- Hair and complexion: Silver-gray hair, pale skin, and a face that still looks youthful 1.
- Eyes: Amber eyes with conspicuous, catlike slit pupils 1.
- Ears: Rounded rather than pointed; Miley explains that this does not rule out elven ancestry 21.
- Clothing: Initially wears a black cloak and close-fitting dark leather armor. Later receives dark-gray School of the Wolf light armor 1 5.
- Distinguishing marks: A glowing fire rune on his left forearm, later joined by an air rune beneath it 11 48.
- Witcher equipment: Carries two swords on his back and wears a wolf-head medallion 1 11.
Personality
Witt’s apparently cold exterior conceals strong affection for his adopted family. Protecting them matters more to him than fame or a different career: he declines Old Graz’s offer of mage training because he will not leave Vesemir and the others during the approaching turmoil 4 29.
He combines preparation with dangerous boldness. He carefully plans potion use and maintains disciplined training habits, yet sometimes commits to attacks beyond his experience. Geralt repeatedly checks his recklessness, while Vesemir compares his fighting style to Ivar Evil-Eye’s and warns him against exposing his talent before he can defend himself 8 9 12 31.
His opposition to destiny is complicated by fear of changing the future he knows. He wants to save Vesemir from the Wild Hunt, but avoids pursuing Miley because another attachment might draw him into unforeseen events. Geralt recognizes this as fear of the unknown rather than simple indifference 23.
Witt is compassionate without seeing himself as a judge. He tries to return a dead farmer’s body to his family and refuses Old Graz’s proposal to dissect it. When Lowell attacks him with a dagger, he merely trips him rather than drawing his sword against an opponent who poses no real threat 4 16.
Abilities & Skills
Witcher Physiology and Swordsmanship
Witt possesses the enhanced senses, recovery, and combat training produced by witcher mutations 1 2 5.
- Can see in darkness and distinguish familiar people by their footsteps 1 27 31.
- Recovers rapidly from injuries; his bruised waist is almost healed after returning to Kaer Morhen 5.
- Uses the School of the Wolf’s steady, agile swordsmanship, combining blade attacks with one-handed Signs 2 5 22.
- Can overpower ordinary men quickly, though stronger monsters can overwhelm his guard 1 3 43.
- Deflects a crossbow bolt with his steel sword while exhausted, but the impact tears the skin between his thumb and forefinger 50.
Innate Magic and Elemental Runes
Unlike ordinary witchers, Witt can perceive and draw on ambient chaos magic through an innate talent that Old Graz regards as characteristic of a Source 10 29 30.
- Magical perception: Sees elemental flows that Geralt cannot perceive and detects an abnormal concentration beneath the Circle of Elements 10.
- Fire rune: Slowly absorbs ambient magic and allows him to sense fire elemental energy without Petri’s Philter 11.
- Air rune: Obtained after he calms an air-element Place of Power’s gale. He subsequently senses the wind’s path toward a hidden portal mechanism 48 49.
- Mental resilience: Old Graz credits his unusually resilient mind with surviving repeated casting-related losses of consciousness. Witt associates this resilience with souls from two worlds 30.
- Limits: Drawing the wrong elemental force can cause unconsciousness and dangerous backlash. He initially lacks formal magical theory and cannot freely command chaos magic like a trained mage 11 26 29 30.
- Growth restriction: Repeatedly absorbing the same Place of Power does not increase his strength again 48.
Aard
Witt uses Aard for telekinetic force and battlefield control 17 25.
- Knocks a swooping griffin down into an explosive trap 17.
- Infuses a blast with fire, igniting the field and suspended Stammelford’s dust 17.
- Releases an emotionally driven wave that knocks down surrounding villagers; Geralt’s Quen protects both Geralt and Old Graz 25.
- Uncontrolled or fire-infused use can disorient him and endanger nearby allies 17 25.
Igni
Igni serves both as a direct weapon and a practical source of fire 3 4.
- Burns through a water hag’s chest while his sword holds it in place 3.
- Ignites Dancing Star Bombs and destroys monster nests and carcasses 3 4.
- Provides a rune through which he channels fire energy into crystal bombs 45.
- Near the first Place of Power, erupts uncontrollably into a massive torrent of flame, exhausting his magic and painfully burning his casting hand 11.
Axii
Witt’s Axii can influence minds and directly attack consciousness 9 10 33.
- Mentally overwhelms Old Speartip before Geralt’s simultaneous Axii takes effect 9 10.
- Compels a tavern keeper to reveal information about Filarey 33.
Quen
Quen is Witt’s most deeply ingrained defensive response 5 30.
- Initially manifests as faint golden patterns close to his body rather than Geralt’s larger shield 3.
- Protects him against a water hag’s claws, a griffin’s sudden strike, and Hector’s fiery attack 3 17 36.
- Expands into a tough circular shield when the Ring of Favor supplies properly filtered earth elemental force 30.
- Does not prevent every consequence of impact: the water hag’s blow still leaves bruising 3.
Yrden
Witt casts Yrden as a surface-bound magical trap during the Idr Giant Centipede hunt 47.
- Lays the trap while he and Geralt guard each other against attacks from any direction.
- Must keep his hand pressed firmly against the surface while casting 47.
Alchemy and Investigation
Witt applies Vesemir’s lessons to potion selection, monster identification, and field preparation 3 8 15 44.
- Identifies a male griffin’s approximate age from a feather and recognizes the danger of a nearby mate 15.
- Recognizes beggartick flowers as a clue to damp caves and succubus charm magic 33.
- Brews Cat Potion and the antidote Pops Potion, leaving more complicated preparations to Geralt 44.
- Accounts for potion toxicity and memorizes vial positions because Cat Potion removes normal color perception 8 9.
- Uses knowledge from his previous life to recognize Places of Power, important figures, and future threats, while concealing the source of that knowledge 7 11 27 38.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Steel sword — Used against human opponents and for deflecting the crossbow bolt beneath Ard Carraigh 1 36 50.
- Silver-plated longsword — Supplied at Kaer Morhen after the water hag renders his apprentice silver sword unusable 3 5.
- School of the Wolf light armor — Dark-gray armor commissioned by Vesemir, fitted to allow the school’s agile fighting style 5 12.
- Wolf medallion — Given to him by Lambert and activated at the Circle of Elements during his final trial 6 10 11.
- Ring of Favor — An ancient, elven-rune-inscribed ring formerly given to Old Graz by White Raffard. Witt receives it as advance payment for Sabrina’s commission; it stabilizes and separates elemental magic. Geralt gains no comparable benefit when testing it 30 31.
- Magic crystal bombs — Five flame-rune crystals acquired from Miley. Witt leaves them partly drained for safer transport, then charges them before throwing. His first sewer test proves much more destructive than he had estimated 23 26 45.
- Witcher potions and bombs — Uses Swallow, Cat, Petri’s Philter, Tawny Owl, and Dancing Star Bombs during contracts and trials 3 8 9 48.
- Grape — A black mare given to him by Anseis. After Witt releases her, she returns to him, and he names her Grape 35 40.
Relationships
- Vesemir — Adoptive father and principal teacher, whom Witt calls “Papa.” Witt intends to become strong enough to prevent his future death at the hands of the Wild Hunt 4 5 23.
- Geralt of Rivia — Brother figure, mentor, and traveling partner. Guides Witt through his first contract and final trial, increasingly treating him as a fellow witcher while remaining protective 2 3 9 49.
- Lambert — Brother figure whose encouragement leads Witt to take his first contract prematurely. Gives him his Wolf medallion and frequently teases him 2 5 6.
- Eskel — Supportive brother figure. Witt shares his first earnings with him, and Eskel offers to accompany him on his final trial 5 7.
- Old Graz — Mage friend and magical adviser. Explains Witt’s casting difficulties, gives him the Ring of Favor, and warns him to keep his possible Elder Blood secret 29 30 38.
- Miley — Half-dryad, half-elf employer and potential romantic interest. Senses familiar elven blood in Witt; he consciously avoids developing their attraction because of his fears about destiny 18 21 23.
- Eithné — Connected to his unexplained Brokilon origins; appears holding him in his dream of the emerald lake 7.
- Sabrina Glevissig — Buys the female griffin’s head and seeks assistance from Witt and Geralt 27 30.
- Anseis — Prince of Lyria and Rivia, initially encountered under the name Selkirk of Gulet. Commissions the search for Filarey and gives Witt the horse later named Grape 32 35 40.
- Vilgefortz — A threat Witt anticipates through his prior knowledge. Witt plans to expose him and fears that Rience’s blood sample may reveal his own possible Elder Blood 38.
