The abilities drawn from Ma Nan and Jiding were the Cutting Curse and Expelliarmus respectively, both at LV1. Sean had already made a beginning with Expelliarmus, so the one he drew directly stacked onto it, increasing his understanding and experience with the spell. As for the Cutting Curse, Sean had not learned it yet, so it was like gaining a new spell out of thin air.
So far, Troll Strength and Troll Hide, the two abilities that had been converted into talents, had helped Sean considerably. But he knew very well that these two talents would only be of much help until around third or fourth year. By fifth year, most people's dueling experience would have risen to a new level.
