Background
Li Jin grew up as an orphan under the care of Uncle Paopao, chief of Red Carp Village. Shortly before his enrollment, the village discovered a small gold mine in a river channel. The chief reported it to Nuoding City’s lord, securing protection and profit-sharing for the villagers. Li Jin’s potential as a Soul Master helped persuade the lord to protect the village rather than seize the mine 1.
Despite his expensive clothing and substantial share of the mining profits, Li Jin entered Nuoding Academy as a village-recommended work-study student. His thoughts reveal knowledge of Douluo’s original storyline: he recognizes Xiao Wu’s true nature, anticipates Tang Hao’s presence, and identifies the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm as an opportunity originally associated with Huo Yuhao ten thousand years later 1 6 14.
Appearance
- Usual appearance: A fair-skinned, handsome boy with black hair, red lips, and white teeth. He initially wears luxurious red clothing and later changes into Nuoding Academy’s uniform 1 18 21.
- After the sacrifice: Becomes taller and stronger, with more striking features and an otherworldly bearing 15.
- Martial Soul Possession: His hair turns nine colors, and nine-colored fish scales appear at the corners of his eyes 21.
- Martial Soul manifestation: An exquisitely colored carp emerges from his forehead and circles him, its nine colors shifting in the light 17.
Personality
Li Jin is generally composed, playful, and generous toward his friends. He repeatedly treats the work-study students to meals, provides Xiao Wu with living expenses, and entertains her with shared memories of Tom and Jerry. Their teasing and arguments over bedding become a regular part of dormitory life 2 5 6 7 21.
He rejects the idea that becoming a Soul Master makes someone inherently superior to ordinary people. When Yu Xiaogang disparages a disabled beggar, Li Jin insists that he will remember his own origins and refuses to share Yu Xiaogang’s outlook 16.
His kindness does not extend to those who deliberately threaten him. He regards hostile people’s fortune backlash as deserved, keeps valuables they lose, and coerces the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm by threatening to reveal its embarrassing memories. His confidence in his fortune initially encourages a relaxed approach to cultivation, but Tang San’s technical skill eventually motivates him to train seriously 7 15 20 24 30.
Abilities & Skills
Nine-Colored Koi and Koi Physique
The Nine-Colored Koi is a fortune Martial Soul, despite Su Yuntao’s initial assessment that it was flashy but useless in combat 1 17.
- Fortune consumption: Devours fortune carrying malice toward Li Jin. It does not consume others’ fortune without cause, and feeding accelerates its growth 17.
- Hostility detection: Malicious intent forms a connection to Li Jin, accompanied by a brief nine-colored gleam in his eyes 2 5.
- Fortune backlash: Enemies suffer misfortune after directing malice at him. Tang Hao’s repeated intent to kill him triggers catastrophic flare-ups of old injuries 2 16.
- Lucky discoveries: Li Jin frequently finds money and obtains Yu Xiaogang’s lost Storage Soul Tool Ring shortly before leaving Nuoding City 7.
- Spiritual protection: Within his Sea of Consciousness, the koi strips the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm of its fortune and spiritual origin, preventing the beast from controlling the encounter 14 15.
Spiritual Detection
One of the four Soul Skills selected from the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm’s million-year ring 14.
- Scans a target’s internal condition and Soul Power circulation 27 29.
- Breaches Tang San’s mental defenses and begins deciphering Purple Demon Eye 27.
- Allows Li Jin to check the silkworm’s simulated Mysterious Heaven Skill route for errors 29.
Spiritual Sharing
Shares both perceived images and images formed in Li Jin’s imagination 21.
- Plays remembered Tom and Jerry episodes for Xiao Wu 21.
- Combines with Spiritual Detection to give allies access to his observations 27 28.
- Can consume substantial Soul Power: repeated entertainment sessions leave him nearly depleted 21.
- Li Jin considers using shared imagery to interfere with enemies, though this remains an idea at that point 21.
Spiritual Detection Sharing
A combined application of Spiritual Detection and Spiritual Sharing used to support Xiao Wu in battle 27 28.
- Enables Xiao Wu to anticipate Tang San’s movements, including Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track 28.
- Overwhelms Tang San’s Minute Detail–realm Purple Demon Eye during the initial scan 27.
- Lets Li Jin observe and deduce Tang Sect techniques while Xiao Wu fights 27 28.
Spiritual Telekinesis
Materializes spiritual power to move and handle objects 18.
- Retrieves Tang San’s lost Gold Soul Coin from between Spirit Hall’s floorboards 18.
- Transfers softened whale glue into a pot and prevents it from cooling prematurely 25.
Spiritual Bestowal
Temporarily bestows Li Jin’s spirit upon natural elements, creating spirits under his control. Its stated applications include Earth Spirits, Flame Spirits, Water Flow Spirits, and Raging Sylphs 25.
- Creates a Flame Spirit despite Li Jin lacking a fire attribute 25.
- Compresses the flame until its central temperature rivals that of a fire-attribute Soul King 25.
- Softens ten-thousand-year whale glue in less than half an hour 25.
- The created Flame Spirit returns to ordinary fire when he withdraws the skill 25.
Embryonic Ice Martial Soul
The Sky Dream Ice Silkworm’s origin grants Li Jin an ice element without a soul, rather than an immediately complete second Martial Soul 15.
- Cools his body during the painful absorption of whale glue 25 26.
- Emits enough cold to help Xiao Wu endure the same treatment 26.
- Li Jin seeks to complete it using either the Ice Jade Emperor Scorpion or the Heavenly Snow Woman; neither choice has been realized in the supplied chapters 15.
Tang Sect Techniques and Mysterious Heaven Skill
Li Jin copies more than half of the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record by observing Tang San during his fight with Xiao Wu. The copied material excludes the hidden-weapon techniques and the medicine and poison records in the Hundred Solutions of Hidden Weapon 28.
- Uses the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm as a simulated test subject rather than risking an unverified circulation route in his own body 29.
- Successfully practices Mysterious Heaven Skill and teaches it to Xiao Wu 30.
- Benefits from already-open Ren and Du meridians, allowing unusually rapid progress in the method 30.
- Copying the other techniques is documented, but practical mastery of each is not established 28 30.
Sky Dream Ice Silkworm Reserves
The silkworm’s shed husk rests in Li Jin’s dantian and steadily releases stored primordial energy, allowing his Soul Power to grow even while he sleeps 15 29.
- A stronger physique permits greater energy release and absorption, as demonstrated after consuming whale glue 26.
- Li Jin expects full absorption of the spiritual origin to give his soul form and substance comparable to a divine soul 15.
- He also identifies the origin as a resource capable of raising his future koi Soul Rings to the hundred-thousand-year level. These are prospective benefits, not completed advancements 15.
Equipment & Items
- Storage Soul Tool Ring — Originally Yu Xiaogang’s; found outside a carriage rental shop. Contains thirty cubic meters of storage, 5,000 Gold Soul Coins, books, clothing, and personal belongings when recovered 7.
- Soul Beast reference book — A Spirit Hall text from the recovered ring, covering Soul Beast names, ages, and abilities. Li Jin reads it while traveling to the Star Dou Great Forest 13.
- Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — A belt-shaped Storage Soul Tool purchased for 3,000 Gold Soul Coins after Tang San surrendered it as compensation for destroying a smithy 24.
- Ten-thousand-year whale glue — Bought as an unpromising black piece of whale rubber for 300 Gold Soul Coins. Li Jin prepares it with Spiritual Bestowal and consumes half, giving the other half to Xiao Wu 25.
- Gold mine dividends — His continuing share of Red Carp Village’s mining profits supplements the wealth obtained from Yu Xiaogang’s lost ring 1 24.
Relationships
- Xiao Wu — Closest companion and promised future wife. Their relationship begins with shared bedding and a playful marriage agreement. She protects him publicly; he supports her financially, assists her in combat, and shares cultivation resources and Mysterious Heaven Skill with her 1 2 7 18 26 28 30.
- Uncle Paopao — Guardian and chief of Red Carp Village, who raised Li Jin as an orphan 1.
- Wang Sheng — Dormmate and friend. Warns him about Yu Xiaogang and teaches him the Meditation Method in exchange for dinner 4 5.
- Sky Dream Ice Silkworm — Unwilling resident of his Sea of Consciousness and source of his first Soul Ring. Its attempt to exploit him ends in subjugation; Li Jin later uses its Simulation to verify cultivation methods 14 15 29.
- Tang San — Dormmate and rival. Jealousy, Li Jin’s refusal to become Yu Xiaogang’s disciple, and ownership of Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges deepen their conflict 2 4 17 27.
- Yu Xiaogang — Rejected prospective teacher. Repeatedly belittles Li Jin’s Martial Soul and mistakes his million-year ring for a ten-year ring 4 5 17 18.
- Tang Hao — Hidden enemy whose attempts to direct killing intent at Li Jin repeatedly worsen his injuries 2 16.
- Ma Xiunuo — Spirit Hall official who registers him as a Soul Master and warns him about Yu Xiaogang’s background 18.
- Phelps — Merchant who gives him passage toward the Star Dou Great Forest and advises him about dangers outside the academy 7 13.
Major Story Arcs
Arrival at Nuoding Academy
Li Jin concedes Dorm Seven’s customary challenge rather than fight Wang Sheng. After Xiao Wu becomes dorm boss, he agrees to share his bedding with her. Tang San’s objection prompts Xiao Wu to propose a future marriage, which Li Jin accepts. He soon becomes an important supporter of the work-study students through his generosity 1 2 3.
Rejecting Yu Xiaogang
Yu Xiaogang wrongly concludes that Li Jin’s innate full Soul Power proves he already possesses twin Martial Souls. Li Jin rejects both discipleship and help choosing his first Soul Ring, choosing instead to learn meditation from Wang Sheng and seek a ring independently 4 5 7.
The Million-Year Sacrifice
In the Star Dou Great Forest, the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm attempts a false sacrifice to hide from Di Tian’s pursuit. The Nine-Colored Koi seizes its spiritual origin, turning the scheme into a genuine benefit for Li Jin. He leaves with a million-year ring, stored cultivation energy, and the beginnings of an ice Martial Soul 13 14 15.
At Spirit Hall, Yu Xiaogang and Tang San mistake the platinum ring for an ordinary white ring. Li Jin’s rank 13 test contradicts their assumption that he has ruined his potential, and Ma Xiunuo formally registers him as a Soul Master 17 18.
Resources and Technical Growth
Li Jin purchases Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges and obtains whale glue that raises him to rank 15. When Tang San tries to recover the belt through a wager, Li Jin refuses an unequal stake, then supports Xiao Wu in the ensuing fight while copying Tang San’s techniques 24 25 26 27 28.
He subsequently verifies Mysterious Heaven Skill, practices it, and teaches Xiao Wu. Acknowledging that Tang San’s techniques made him dangerous despite his lower Soul Power, Li Jin resolves to stop relying solely on passive growth and aims to defeat him unaided 29 30.
