"My name is Robert Neville. I am a survivor living in New York City... Every day at midday, when the sun is high in the sky, I appear at South Street Seaport..."
A sound came from the loudspeaker.
On the rusty dock, under the midday sun, Robert drove his car with his beloved dog Sam, arriving at the place where he had witnessed the deaths of his wife and daughter for what seemed like the umpteenth time.
When the KV Virus broke out in New York, there was a large-scale evacuation before the city was locked down. His wife and daughters were supposed to leave New York safely by helicopter arranged by the authorities.
However, misfortune began from that time.
At the time, a helicopter nearby was being lifted off when a large group of desperate citizens grabbed its landing gear, causing it to lose control.
The helicopter was flying erratically in the sky when it collided with the helicopter carrying his wife and daughter, turning them both into fireballs... w.
His most cherished family member left him, leaving him only a little dog, who is now Sam.
He should have saved those New York residents.
Ironically, it was precisely those desperate New York City residents who killed his two most important loved ones.
However, the misfortune did not end there; his personal misfortune quickly developed into a misfortune for all mankind.
Because from that day on, the New York City meltdown began, and then quickly escalated into a nationwide and even global meltdown...
At some point, Robert suddenly realized that he was all alone.
The soldiers responsible for locking down New York, along with their colleagues, all died from the Mutavore.
New York, the epicenter of the Mutavore outbreak, has become a ghost town.
Since then, Robert has found a house in the suburbs of New York City and started living alone.
But he still longed to connect with others, so he slowly built a radio station, broadcasting to the surrounding area, and every sunny midday he would return to this place that had once been a source of sorrow.
Perhaps he hoped to see his wife and daughter again here.
Perhaps he hoped that a survivor would receive his broadcast, wait for him in the sunlight, and give him a hug and a smile.
Perhaps both are true.
Unfortunately, this place that robbed him of his family offered him no compensation.
What he gained here was a deeper level of despair.
He had been living alone in New York City for a year and a half and had never encountered a single survivor.
As the dock gradually rusted, his heart grew increasingly desolate.
Today is just like any other day.
He can only talk to his beloved dog.
"Let's go, Sam, no one's coming."
Let's go get some exercise!
Robert had been sitting quietly, suddenly stood up, tidied his belongings, and waved to his beloved dog Sam.
The other person very intuitively walked towards the car, climbed in after Robert opened the driver's side door, and jumped into the passenger seat.
" Sam, what do you want to eat today? Tomatoes? Corn?" Robert drove the car out of the dock and headed into the city.
Sam always appeared exceptionally obedient when asked questions by his owner.
So it shook its head violently, and all its fur flew up.
Robert ruffled its head with one hand while driving, saying, "You can't be picky about food. We can't hunt every day."
Now is the time for hunting and relaxation.
After the collapse of New York City, the city's inhabitants became the Darkseekers and animals.
The animal may have escaped from the zoo.
Robert didn't care about that; all he knew was that if he hunted down an animal, he could have meat for several days.
Let's go!
With a stomp of the accelerator, the car roared to life and sped onto the clear main road.
call!
As the cool breeze blew in through the car window, Robert let out a strange cry and vigorously rubbed Sam's head to warn it of any prey that might dart out from either side of the road.
Just then...
Bang!
A sudden, loud bang.
Robert instinctively ducked his head; experience told him that his tire had blown out.
However, the next moment he realized that his car was not out of control.
"It's not a tire problem!" Robert slammed on the brakes, still shaken, and grabbed the rifle beside him.
He looked around in alarm.
Bang!
Another loud bang, and it wasn't far from him.
"That's the sound of an explosion! Someone's there!"
Robert's stagnant heart suddenly stirred. He dropped his rifle, told Sam to sit properly, and stepped on the gas, driving off in the direction the sound came from.
On the road.
Robert's eyes were vacant, his gaze fixed on the ground ahead, his mind elsewhere, while he continued talking to Sam.
"Listen, they're carrying a lot of explosives. They might be gangsters or thugs. I'll try to keep my distance from them..."
Suddenly, there was another loud "bang" ahead.
It's not far off.
It's right on these two streets.
Robert slammed on the brakes, his upper body slumped over the steering wheel, staring blankly at Sam, whom he had raised for over a year. His eyes were filled with inexplicable emotions, and he parted his lips slightly to compose himself.
"The last time,
I'm leaving my watch with you. If the hands of this watch point here, which is four o'clock in the afternoon, and I haven't returned by then, go home, stay there for the night, and then leave the city tomorrow..."
He entrusted Sam to him as if he were a real person.
Sam whimpered, sensing his master's sadness, and instinctively pressed his paws onto his master's thigh, sticking out his tongue and making a "ha ha" sound of comfort.
Don't be so sad, I'll be back!
Robert forced a smile and swatted away his dog's paw.
He then got out of the car with his rifle, leaving Sam with an open window, and searched alone in the direction from which the explosion had come.
The explosions seemed never to stop; these sounds became his best guideposts.
However, the more Robert walked down the street, the more familiar it seemed to him...
"This is the New York Research Institute where I used to work!"
This is a place he will never forget for the rest of his life.
This is where the nightmare begins.
That day, he first heard the report about the KV Virus in the laboratory.
"What's going on? Who caused this explosion?" Robert couldn't help but quicken his pace, jogging as he concealed himself.
The closer he got, the more certain he became that someone was attacking his former workplace.
After passing through the last building, the New York Virus Research Institute finally came into Robert's view in the distance; it was a sturdy fortress with only six floors.
However, what unfolded before him was a scene he had never imagined—
Groups of armored vehicles were parked on both sides of the road, and soldiers wearing full biohazard protective suits guarded key points. They were well-equipped and looked around with extreme vigilance.
Up to this point, the art style has been normal.
And this was also within Robert's expectations; he had long guessed that this group possessed so many explosives because they were either part of the military or a gang.
but!
What's with the national flags printed on those armored vehicles and the clothes of those people?
Why are the stars red?
Shouldn't these people be on the other side of the ocean?
How did they end up in New York?
New York is on their East Coast!
Did these people cross the Pacific Ocean and then traverse North America from west to east?
Or perhaps they came from across Europe, landing in the East?
This scene is truly surreal!
Robert, as a lieutenant colonel, had never imagined in his life --
In my lifetime, I actually witnessed the Red Star landing in New York...
