Huikong and the other monks had all come from the Buddhist sects of the Western Realm.
Every one of them was an outstanding monk in his own temple.
Besides their profound understanding of Buddhist teachings, every one of them possessed formidable martial cultivation.
To cultivate Buddhism, one must also cultivate martial arts.
This was common knowledge among Buddhists.
After all, when Buddhists traveled the world, without cultivation to protect themselves, they could neither save others nor save themselves if trouble arose.
Thus, Buddhists placed great importance on cultivation.
Huikong was a Core Formation Realm expert, comparable to an elder of the three great sects.
The other monks were all at much the same level.
The power that a dozen or so Core Formation Realm Buddhist experts could unleash together was naturally extraordinary.
But against an army of a million, even a dozen or so Core Formation Realm experts were merely a lone skiff upon the ocean, incapable of stirring up any waves.
Yet Huikong and the others were fearless.
They would rather give their lives to protect the Holy Son on the mountain.
They even considered it an honor.
To die for the Buddhist Holy Son would be enough to let them enter fully into the Buddha's embrace.
"You have a death wish. Loose!"
Zhao Jingming snorted coldly and immediately gave the order.
In an instant.
Ten thousand arrows flew at once!
A boundless rain of arrows blotted out the sky as it swept toward the monks.
Huikong pressed his palms together, and the Immovable Wisdom King behind him suddenly rose into the air.
Clang, clang, clang, clang!!!
The arrows struck the Immovable Wisdom King, but could not shake him in the slightest, falling away one after another.
The other monks each employed their own methods as well, blocking this dense rain of arrows.
But after they blocked the first volley.
There was still a second.
"It seems these monks all have considerable cultivation. Use the spell-breaking arrows!"
Wu Sanjing spoke coldly.
Soon, the soldiers switched to a special kind of arrow.
These arrows had pitch-black heads, seemingly engraved with strange patterns.
Each entire arrow carried an extraordinary presence.
Spell-breaking arrows!
They were arrows specifically designed to deal with cultivators, made of special materials and engraved with formations that disrupted Spiritual Qi.
"Loose!"
At Wu Sanjing's command, the spell-breaking arrows shot out together.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!
The spell-breaking arrows came whistling toward them.
Huikong and the other monks did not recognize the spell-breaking arrows at all.
They had been born among the peaceful Buddhist sects of the Western Realm, had never experienced war, and had no idea that such things as spell-breaking arrows even existed.
Only when the spell-breaking arrows descended.
Did they realize something was wrong.
Boom, boom, boom, boom!!!
The spell-breaking arrows were astonishingly powerful, breaking through the monks' techniques one after another.
"What?"
"How is this possible?"
"These are no ordinary arrows!"
The monks were all horrified and hurriedly retreated.
"Kill!!!"
Seizing the opportunity, Zhao Jingming immediately ordered an attack.
In an instant, the cavalry began charging, brandishing their long sabers as they rushed toward the monks.
Huikong and the others fought hard to hold them off.
For a time.
Blood flowed in rivers at the foot of Floating Cloud Mountain.
Huikong and the others were fearless. Although they could not counter the spell-breaking arrows, they still held an absolute advantage against ordinary soldiers.
Although Buddhism forbade killing.
That did not mean killing was forbidden under every circumstance.
Especially at a time like this, Huikong and the others would show not the slightest mercy.
"These monks are quite formidable. Every one of them is in the Core Formation Realm!"
Zhao Jingming was somewhat surprised.
"They certainly are. Unfortunately, there are too few of them. If there were over a hundred, we really might not be able to take this mountain."
Wu Sanjing said.
"The Buddhist Holy Son is on the mountain. Is this really wise? If that Buddhist Holy Son turns out to be someone formidable, I'm afraid we'll be drawing fire onto ourselves."
Sun Zhao was still somewhat worried.
From the very beginning, he had not particularly wanted to provoke the Buddhists.
He was different from Zhao Jingming and Wu Sanjing.
Sun Zhao had once witnessed how formidable Buddhists could be.
It had been an old Buddhist monk who wandered the world and had once visited the Phoenix Dance Dynasty.
Sun Zhao, still a young general at the time, had personally witnessed that old Buddhist monk casually knock over a dozen experts of the Phoenix Dance Dynasty to the ground.
No means whatsoever had been able to inflict even the slightest injury on that old Buddhist monk.
That sight had deeply shaken the young Sun Zhao.
So much so that even now.
Sun Zhao still harbored a deep wariness of Buddhists.
Now, hearing that the Buddhist Holy Son was on the mountain, Sun Zhao felt somewhat apprehensive.
Although he had an army of a million behind him.
The title of Buddhist Holy Son was truly rather frightening.
"What's there to fear? That so-called Buddhist Holy Son doesn't even dare show his face, yet he leaves these monks at the foot of the mountain to die. Do you think he could be any kind of master?"
Zhao Jingming's face was full of disdain.
Sun Zhao's brows furrowed tightly.
He did not argue.
But a sense of foreboding lingered in his heart.
He kept feeling that something bad was going to happen.
At this moment.
The monks before Shaolin Temple had begun to fall into a disadvantage.
They were certainly powerful, and ordinary soldiers were utterly beneath their notice.
But they could not withstand such numbers.
The dense, surging crowds could never be killed off, no matter how many they slew.
Soon.
Huikong and the others began struggling to replenish their Spiritual Qi.
Squelch!!!
One monk was caught off guard and wounded by a spear, immediately losing much of his fighting strength.
Roar!!!
Seeing this, Huikong could not afford to hesitate.
He abruptly unleashed the Buddhist Lion's Roar.
The lion's roar shook the heavens.
The surrounding soldiers immediately fell to the ground in agony.
The pressure on the monks eased.
But Huikong's face had gone pale, and he swayed on his feet.
The Buddhist Lion's Roar was certainly astonishingly powerful.
But it also took an enormous toll on the monk who used it.
Huikong could originally have held on for a while longer.
But to rescue his fellow cultivators, he had been forced to unleash the Lion's Roar.
Now, he had little Spiritual Qi remaining.
His fellow cultivators were deeply grateful, but they also knew that, having unleashed the Lion's Roar, Huikong probably could not hold on much longer.
"Protect Huikong!"
One monk shouted, and the others immediately surged over, sheltering Huikong in their midst.
"Kill!!!"
The army attacked again.
The monks were plunged into a bitter struggle.
Almost every one of them was already wounded.
They were on the verge of losing their lives.
Just then.
The sky suddenly darkened.
Dark clouds appeared with extreme suddenness.
In the blink of an eye.
Fierce winds howled, lightning flashed, and thunder boomed.
It seemed a torrential downpour was about to arrive.
Everyone on the ground looked astonished.
They all raised their heads to the sky.
Roar!!!
A deep dragon's cry rang out.
A winding dragon silhouette also flickered in and out of sight among the dark clouds.
At that moment.
Everyone on the ground was dumbfounded.
Whether it was the three vanguard generals, Huikong and the other monks, or the army of a million.
They all froze in place.
"I... am I seeing things?"
"Is that a dragon?"
"Yes! It's a dragon! A true dragon!"
A true dragon had emerged.
Just as the million-strong army stood stunned.
The true dragon extended its head from the dark clouds.
Boom!!!
An indescribably powerful presence surged from the dragon's mouth.
It plunged straight toward the ground.
Boom!!!
There was a tremendous crash.
A vast stretch of ground vanished outright, leaving an enormous crater.
Along with the ground, over ten thousand soldiers had also vanished.
In just an instant, over ten thousand soldiers had perished!
Not even their bones remained.
They had simply evaporated.
