Huang Liang had no idea what Kenai Mountain Wolf was until he entered Old Wolf's dream.
It was his third day in Vancouver when Mei Yiqiu and Dickinson took him to the Wolf Manor and introduced him to Quay Wolf, who was already the de facto head of the Wolf Family.
Although the Wolf Family is not of pure Chinese descent, but rather of mixed Inuit and Chinese descent, with the majority being Inuit, Huang Liang still felt the warmth of meeting old friends in a foreign land when he was with them.
At that time, Old Wolf was terminally ill and looked like he would soon pass away.
He lay stiffly on the bed, his face so thin that only bones and a thin layer of skin remained. His eye sockets were sunken, but his eyes bulged out, wide open, the cloudy and dry whites of his eyes like the shell of a boiled duck egg, with two dull gray pupils on top, like two flies stuck to a duck egg.
William Wolf stared intently at the ceiling, looking as if he had died with his eyes wide open, his withered fingers twitching occasionally to indicate that he was still alive.
Huang Liang did some preliminary research into the Wolf Family's medical history and made a preliminary judgment that it was a very rare mental illness, possibly related to a defect in the nervous system or genes. This was not originally his area of expertise; he was a surgeon. However, in the new resume the organization had fabricated for him, he was portrayed as an all-rounder proficient in neurosurgery, neurology, and neurosurgery, skilled in surgery, and possessing mysterious Eastern medical techniques.
He had no choice but to bite the bullet and try anything, even if it seemed hopeless, to treat Old Wolf's illness.
In addition to his family history of the disease, Wolf was also diagnosed with Gray Brain Virus. Not many people knew about this except for doctors at UBC Hospital, a few close relatives, Mei Yiqiu and Dickinson.
Huang Liang was shocked when he learned of this. The Gray Brain Virus was no secret; even ordinary people knew that contracting the disease meant being invaded by Parasites. But the invasion of Old Wolf had clearly failed, otherwise things wouldn't be like this now.
However, it was truly strange that Old Wolf hadn't died. Gray Brain Virus is incurable, and there's currently no particularly effective treatment. Of course, the Wolf Family was wealthy enough to enjoy the best medical care and most advanced medications in the world. Although progress on vaccines and specific drugs for Gray Brain Virus has been slow due to the scarcity of samples, some inhibitors have been developed, and Old Wolf survived thanks to these medications.
Huang Liang knew very well that, given Old Wolf's status and the organization's level of attention, the Parasites must be a powerful consciousness. But how did Old Wolf resist the invasion? Even Evans Lester could only perish together with the invading Parasitic Consciousness!
He longed to enter Wolf's dream, but he dared not reveal too much of his strength at the beginning, as he didn't understand Hong Kui at that time. Moreover, given Old Wolf's condition, it was clear that he was no longer able to dream easily. His consciousness was extremely weak and couldn't withstand any more disturbances.
He began trying to give Wolf regular physical therapy and acupuncture, hoping to stimulate his brain and nervous system, but with little effect. He concluded that Old Wolf's illness was not simply caused by the Gray Brain Virus. The Gray Brain Virus only affects the cerebral cortex and does not damage other bodily functions. His current symptoms were not hereditary; in their family's medical history, no one had ever been as weak as him before death. Usually, they would have one or two sudden attacks of " Werewolf Syndrome " before dying suddenly.
Huang Liang roughly concluded that this was the result of Old Wolf's struggle against the Parasitic Consciousness. He didn't know what went wrong during the consciousness invasion process, as it neither succeeded in parasitizing Wolf nor killed him.
Later, Hong Kui told him that Old Wolf had received treatment from Qingmu in Wuzhong, which put Huang Liang at ease. It must have been Qingmu who used some method to control Old Wolf's Shadow Consciousness. He knew that it was difficult to kill the Shadow Consciousness without harming the main consciousness.
Mei Yiqiu only stayed for one day before leaving and never came back. Dickinson, on the other hand, would visit him from time to time. Every time Huang Liang saw him, he would think of the chip on the back of his neck and wonder if it had been removed.
A week later, Old Wolf's Werewolf Syndrome finally kicked in.
At that moment, his cloudy, pale eyes, as white as boiled salted duck eggs, suddenly flashed blue light like a supernova explosion, long fangs grew from his mouth, and the hair on his face grew at a visible speed, quickly covering his entire face.
The living dead who had been lying on the bed suddenly gained immense strength and sat up like a zombie, stretching his stiff arms forward and wildly clawing at the air with his withered claws.
Although Huang Liang already knew about the Wolf Family's medical history, he was still taken aback.
Martha, who was standing nearby, seemed to be used to this scene. She quickly came over with several servants, held Old Wolf down, and whispered something in his ear.
Huang Liang didn't hear what she said because he had already entered Wolf's dream.
In his dream, William Wolf appeared much younger than his actual, sickly self. He stood straight amidst snow-covered hills, his feet sinking deep into the snow, leaving two clear lines of footprints behind him that stretched far into the distance.
A pack of gray wolves was running through the forest ahead, pursued by sleds covering the mountains. The people on the sleds, bundled up in thick clothing, urged the sled dogs on their race towards the wolves, firing shots into the air. The gunfire drove the wolves in one direction, eventually trapping them in a ravine.
Huang Liang saw that Old Wolf's hands were clenched into fists and his body was trembling.
From a dream perspective, this space is far too vast. Huang Liang judged that Old Wolf's Mental Power could not possibly create such a large dream. When Huang Liang channeled his Mental Power over it, he discovered that there was clearly a mental barrier in front of Wolf, like an invisible, soft piece of glass. Perceiving the world on that side with his consciousness was like watching a giant screen movie.
He knew that was the boundary of Wolf's dream, but why was there another space beyond that boundary? However, he judged that it must be related to the Wolf Family's medical history. Could it be that human genes can carry spiritual power? He couldn't quite figure it out.
Then, on the summit of a tall mountain opposite, a huge white wolf appeared. Its white fur looked like it was covered in a layer of snow that had just fallen in Alaska. Its slightly open mouth revealed sharp fangs, but its eyes were not fierce, and it did not howl. It just stood quietly, exuding the aura of a king.
Based on the comparison with the surrounding scenery and the people who fired the shots, it can be determined that this wolf's shoulder height reached more than two meters and its body length exceeded four meters, making it comparable to a small Asia elephant.
Huang Liang initially thought it was just an exaggeration from a dream; how could there be such a huge wolf in the world? But later, Hong Kui told him that there really were such huge wolves in Alaska a long time ago. The ancestors of the Wolf Family lived there.
Of course, Huang Liang wasn't concerned with wolves or the history of the Wolf Family. So he turned his gaze back to the feet of William Wolf in his dream—on the white snow, a faint shadow trembled with Wolf's trembling body.
The shadow twisted, as if struggling to stand up.
Suddenly, a scalpel appeared in Huang Liang's hand, its blade gleaming with a light colder than ice and snow.
