Background / History

Childhood and separation

Shao Chongsi met Gu Chengyuan when the latter became lost in the Shao household while waiting for his mother. Calling each other Little Persimmon and Little Orange, the boys became inseparable outside school. Shao Chongsi told his father that he wanted to marry Little Orange, and the two celebrated their birthdays together 395 527.

Three years into their friendship, Shao Chongsi fell into a pool. Gu Chengyuan rescued him from the freezing water, but Shao Chongsi lost consciousness before adults arrived. Gu Chengyuan’s mother, Lan Qing, subsequently cut off contact between the children and concealed her son’s involvement in the rescue 527.

Shao Chongsi initially insisted that Little Orange had saved him. When the family’s elderly butler claimed that his grandson Yunxi was the rescuer, Shao Chongsi struck him with a glass lampshade. His parents repeatedly approached the Gu Family without securing permission for the boys to meet, but would not explain the situation to him. He eventually became withdrawn, believing Little Orange had died that night 527.

Yunxi and the umbrella encounter

Yunxi benefited from the belief that he had saved Shao Chongsi’s life. During Shao Chongsi’s freshman year of college, they briefly dated after Yunxi invoked the supposed rescue and his dying grandfather’s wish to see him settled. Shao Chongsi later stated that he had never loved Yunxi and that they had not even held hands 291 527.

Shao Chongsi ended the relationship after becoming dissatisfied with Yunxi’s behavior, including repeatedly using his name to obtain favors. During their rainy breakup meeting, a masked young man sheltered him with an umbrella and then left. His reddish-brown eyelashes and bitter-orange scent reminded Shao Chongsi of Little Orange. Shao photographed the departing figure and searched unsuccessfully for him afterward 264 527.

Reunion on the dating show

Shao Chongsi initially did not want to join the dating show, but changed his mind after seeing Gu Chengyuan among its participants. Gu’s eyes resembled Little Orange’s, although his apparent height and markedly different personality made Shao uncertain. He also considered Gu Chengyuan’s public persona fake 445 527.

Their early interactions were antagonistic: Shao Chongsi enjoyed provoking Gu Chengyuan and watching his composed image collapse. Nevertheless, he repeatedly sought his company. After helping a drunken Gu remove his shoes, Shao realized that his height matched the young man from the umbrella encounter 210 527.

A truth-or-dare challenge exposed Shao Chongsi’s phone wallpaper—a photograph of Gu Chengyuan from behind. The childhood connection and rescue were later established through a file and childhood photographs. By the time Shao confronted the deception, he understood that Gu Chengyuan was both Little Orange and his actual rescuer 241 290 527.

Pursuit and marriage

After learning the truth, Shao Chongsi apologized for failing to recognize Gu Chengyuan and for deliberately provoking him on the show. He openly admitted his fear of losing him again and persistently pursued him despite Gu’s resistance 290 291.

His protectiveness became especially pronounced when Yunxi approached Gu Chengyuan about an upcoming production. Shao, who had moved next door, rushed over, offered to pay the withdrawal penalty, and blocked Yunxi’s friend request on Gu’s phone. He subsequently told Gu that he had disbanded the production crew and compensated its members 264 265 295.

Shao Chongsi also followed Gu Chengyuan to a commercial shoot disguised as a mute bodyguard. Gu recognized him but played along, pretending to prefer the quiet bodyguard to his sharp-tongued friend. The act culminated in a hotel encounter where Shao revealed himself and kissed him 444 445 446 447.

Their relationship became explicit after an assassin threatened Gu Chengyuan. Shao shot the attacker and was deeply shaken by Gu’s willingness to gamble with his own life. Gu apologized and promised him a genuine relationship, which Shao eagerly accepted 485 486.

In their side story, Shao repeatedly proposed marriage until Gu agreed. They registered their marriage the following day and announced it online. Shao purchased headline placements on several platforms and posted their wedding photographs 527.

Appearance

• Tall, muscular build: Despite sometimes appearing refined or frail to others, he has pronounced arm muscles and can lift Gu Chengyuan with one arm 203 352.

Personality

Shao Chongsi is sharp-tongued, provocative, and highly competitive. Early in the dating show, he is more interested in finding fault than finding a partner. He enjoys gossip and deliberately needles Gu Chengyuan, but later regrets how much trouble his remarks caused 107 183 210 366.

His intimidating presentation contrasts with a pronounced fear of darkness and ghosts. In a haunted house, he screams and clings to Gu Chengyuan while denying that he is frightened. Nighttime scenes near water also trigger trembling and distress. He links these fears to the childhood night when he believed Little Orange had died 77 290 302.

With Gu Chengyuan, Shao becomes openly affectionate, clingy, and vulnerable. He seeks reassurance, apologizes readily after discovering their shared past, and is distressed by even small increases in physical distance. His fear of another separation can also make him overbearing, as shown when he takes control of Gu’s phone to block Yunxi 265 279 291.

Despite his flirtation and persistence, Shao is cautious about physical intimacy because he does not want to make Gu uncomfortable. He also wants Gu to value him emotionally rather than merely desire his body 488 489 493.

He can be ruthless toward enemies. After discovering Yunxi’s deception, he pays to publicize damaging information and later arranges for Yunxi’s whereabouts to reach hostile parties. When Gu Chengyuan is endangered, his usual teasing gives way to cold, forceful action 290 427 462 485.
