We all raised our phones above our heads, trying to see where the dripping blood was coming from.
Following the light from our phones, I looked up at the warehouse ceiling and was so frightened that my phone slipped out of my hand and fell to the floor.
Rows upon rows of bloody racks of ribs hung neatly overhead!!
At the sight, Bun Head swore:
"Fucking hell, that's disgusting. Those aren't human ribs, are they?"
Little Six gave him a shove and said:
"That security guard just looks a little strange. That doesn't mean he's a bad person. Besides..."
Before Little Six could finish, I hurriedly waved a hand to shut him up.
Deep inside the warehouse, I thought I caught a glimpse of a pair of glowing red eyes!!
Those eyes looked especially eerie in the pitch-black warehouse, but they only flashed briefly before quickly disappearing again.
Bun Head swallowed and nervously edged closer to me:
"Bro, did... did you see what looked like a pair of eyes over there?"
I nodded and said:
"I saw them. No idea what they were!"
Bun Head had spent years on the streets and been in plenty of bloody fights. He always carried a Swiss Army knife tucked into his clothes.
He immediately drew the knife and gripped it tightly, glanced at me, and asked in a low voice:
"Go take a look?"
I drew a breath and waved for him to back off.
"Look at what? Who knows what might jump out? Hurry up and call for help!"
Bun Head held the knife between his teeth and quickly called Shunzi.
After a long while, Shunzi answered listlessly.
"What's up, Brother Qiang? What do you need?"
When the call connected, Bun Head shouted excitedly:
"I'm in the warehouse! Some bastard locked me inside. Bring some guys over, hurry!"
Hearing that, Shunzi immediately perked up and raised his voice:
"What? Brother Qiang, you're in that warehouse at the dump?"
"Yeah, quit wasting time! This place is seriously creepy. Hurry over and open the door!"
Shunzi clearly hesitated on the other end before slowly saying:
"All right, wait for me, Brother Qiang. I'll bring a couple of guys!"
Bun Head hung up and hurriedly gripped his knife again.
"Shunzi will be here with some guys soon. Let's stay right here and wait!"
Little Six hadn't seen the eyes earlier. Now he asked quietly:
"Were you two seeing things? How come I didn't see anything?"
Bun Head lost his temper and swore:
"With your fucking IQ, just keep your mouth shut! First you pointed at a wall and told me it was a restaurant with really good noodles, and now you're saying you can't see anything!"
Little Six got angry too.
"Bun Head, cut the bullshit. There's no such thing as ghosts in this world. Eyes, my ass. Wait here, I'll go look!"
With that, Little Six walked deeper into the warehouse with his phone.
Frightened, I hurriedly called out:
"Little Six, don't be stubborn! Come back!"
But Little Six kept walking straight ahead as though he hadn't heard me.
Little Six's greatest strength and weakness were equally obvious: he was far too straightforward!!
Once he dug his heels in, not even a train could drag him away.
Seeing him walk ahead, I couldn't just stand there. I stamped my foot and followed.
When Bun Head saw me going too, he swore and followed with his knife in hand.
The three of us carefully moved forward, one behind another.
"Drip... drip..."
The rows of bloody ribs hanging from the warehouse ceiling kept dripping blood.
A lot of it was impossible to dodge and dripped onto us.
After walking for a while, we finally reached the back of the warehouse, where we had spotted the eyes.
This area wasn't as filthy and cluttered as the entrance. Apart from a thick layer of dust, there was no other rubbish on the floor.
But a large crate sat on that open stretch of floor.
The crate was wide and long, with plenty of wooden slats nailed across it. It looked just like the smuggling crates used for drugs and weapons on TV.
Little Six swept his phone around and said with a guileless grin:
"See, you two? Nothing here, right?"
Bun Head ignored him, studying the large crate in front of him instead.
"That old security guard's dirt-poor, but this crate's still nailed shut with two nails. What treasure's he got in there?"
I had no interest in examining the wooden crate and hurriedly called them back to the entrance to wait for help.
But each was more curious than the other, staring at the crate and trying to see inside.
Bun Head simply took his army knife and started prying out the nails.
I hurriedly tried to stop him:
"Don't mess with it. It belongs to that security guard, after all. I still have things to ask him. Don't upset him!"
Bun Head kept prying as he said:
"That bastard locked all three of us in here. Did he care whether we were upset? Once I get out, I'm going to catch him and stab him a couple of times!"
With a bang, he pried one nail loose.
There was no need to pry out the remaining nail. Bun Head grabbed the slat blocking the lid and snapped it with a hard pull.
Without a second thought, he flung the crate open.
"Holy shit!"
Whatever he saw frightened him so badly that he toppled to the floor.
Little Six looked inside, suddenly frowned, and backed away in a panic.
Seeing the two of them scared shitless, I took a deep breath, fully braced myself, and shone my phone inside.
"Holy shit!"
I simply couldn't take it. My mental defenses crumbled instantly, and I fell onto my backside in fright too.
Inside the crate lay a badly decomposed, misshapen corpse!
Its face was so rotten that it was covered in maggots, and bones were exposed in several places on its body. It was horrifying!
Bun Head frowned and swore:
"That old security guard's a murdering maniac! What the hell has he stashed here?"
That wasn't what worried me. I raised my head and looked at the ceiling overhead.
Those rows of ribs hanging neatly above us, dripping blood, could very well have been human bones!!
Without another thought, the three of us hurried back to the warehouse doors to wait for Shunzi to let us out.
We waited for over half an hour.
Bun Head impatiently called several more times, but the line was always busy.
Amid my panic, I glanced into the depths of the warehouse again.
In the darkness, those glowing red eyes appeared again, seemingly staring straight at me.
I tightened my grip on my phone nervously and signaled to Bun Head to be careful, but the eyes suddenly vanished again.
A moment later, they appeared out of nowhere, only this time they were getting closer and closer to us.
Sweat kept seeping from my palms as I tried to figure out what this thing was.
Bun Head pressed himself against the warehouse doors. The red eyes had frightened him badly too, and he kept pounding on the doors.
As for Little Six, that went without saying. He had never believed in ghosts, and the sight of those red eyes immediately put him on guard to fight a wild beast.
The red eyes floated in the air, closer and closer, closer and closer...
I thought I could faintly hear a miserable sobbing accompanying them.
Just as we stood on high alert, those blood-red eyes drawing ever closer to us.
Suddenly, a furious pounding came from outside.
"Brother Qiang, are you in there?"
Bun Head shouted, "Yeah! Hurry up and open the door, quick!"
Shunzi had arrived. He might have brought tools along.
"Clang... clang..."
He was hammering at the lock outside with something.
But the blood-red eyes didn't stop approaching. They kept coming closer, and the accompanying sobs grew clearer.
When they were less than a meter away, I thought I could faintly make out a human face!
Bun Head's fighting spirit flared. With a roar, he raised his knife and was about to charge.
"Creak..."
Shunzi had smashed the warehouse doors open!
I hurriedly grabbed Bun Head and Little Six and lunged outside with all my strength. We leaped out of the warehouse and all three landed flat on our faces.
I hastily looked back to see whether the eyes had followed us out. They floated in the darkness for a moment, then vanished.
I let out a long, heavy breath. My legs had already gone weak, and I couldn't stand, so I simply lay spread-eagled on the ground.
Seeing us, Shunzi asked in a panic:
"Brother Qiang, are you guys all right?"
Bun Head sat on the ground, still clutching his knife, and reached out to yank Shunzi over.
"What the fuck took you so long? We've been waiting an hour, huh?"
Frightened, Shunzi apologized over and over, then said with an aggrieved look:
"Brother Qiang, there are lots of taboos around here, especially at night. Nobody wants to come out. I made a bunch of calls, but couldn't get a single person to come. So I grabbed some tools and forced myself to run over here alone!"
Bun Head looked around. Shunzi really was alone, still holding an iron hammer.
Bun Head let go, patted his shoulder, and said:
"All right, good man, brother. I was wrong about you!"
Shunzi straightened his clothes and asked quietly:
"Brother Qiang, you came here looking for that old security guard, right? Did he lock you inside?"
Before Bun Head could answer, Little Six pointed at a distant rubbish heap and shouted:
"Look over there!"
We looked in the direction Little Six was pointing.
On a large rubbish heap not far from us stood a hunched figure, holding a long crowbar.
