Background / History
Recruitment and early training
Before joining SSC, Peter fought alongside Tony Stark in Berlin and caught thieves in Queens. He wanted to become a full-fledged Avenger, but Tony initially restricted him to neighborhood work, including stopping thefts and helping residents 157.
Tony introduced Peter to Natasha, Banner, Ivan, and JARVIS at SSC headquarters. Peter then partnered with Tony in a training match against Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes at an abandoned factory. He occupied Bucky with webs and aerial attacks while Tony fought Steve; the match eventually ended with Tony defeating Steve and declaring his old debt settled 138 139.
Peter’s enthusiasm also caused problems during training. After damaging the training area again, he submitted a three-thousand-word self-criticism 147.
Falling-out with Tony
Peter regularly sent Happy detailed logs of his good deeds, hoping to earn Tony’s approval. Frustrated by the lack of meaningful replies, he tried to prove himself by investigating arms dealers near the Queens docks. Their stock included modified Chitauri energy cores and leaked weapons components. His unfamiliarity with his new suit contributed to extensive damage, and Tony confiscated it 157 158.
Lynn persuaded Tony to explain his concerns rather than leave Peter feeling rejected. Tony subsequently apologized for failing to train him properly, taught him the suit’s functions, and returned it. The lesson emphasized assessing dangerous weapons, anticipating collateral damage, and requesting backup instead of rushing in alone 158 159.
E.D.I.T.H. and the European trip
Tony offered Peter nearly all authority over E.D.I.T.H., a global warning and defense system, as a backup arrangement. Peter agreed to look after it provisionally while considering the responsibility during his school trip to Europe 181.
Public expectations soon overwhelmed him. At Aunt May’s charity gala, reporters questioned him about succeeding Tony, prompting him to retreat backstage. He nevertheless accepted Tony and Lynn’s assignment to investigate anomalous energy pulses during the European trip 183.
Peter encountered Quentin Beck, who presented himself as Mysterio, a survivor of a destroyed world. Initially wary of Beck’s unverified identity, Peter gradually accepted his help against the apparent Elementals. Their battles took them from a stone creature in a valley to a Water Elemental in Venice and a Fire Elemental in Prague 184 185 187.
Throughout the crisis, Peter struggled with slowing reactions, reduced strength, and the pressure of holding SSC’s highest temporary clearance. He continued rescuing civilians, including MJ, Ned, and Betty when they became trapped in a Ferris wheel cabin 184 185 187.
After the apparent final Elemental was defeated, Peter gave MJ a black dahlia pendant and confessed his feelings. She reciprocated, and the two began a relationship 188 190.
Quentin Beck’s betrayal
Back in New York, Beck exploited Peter’s difficulty balancing school, superhero duties, and his new relationship. By acting as an understanding older brother, he persuaded Peter to expedite his level-two SSC clearance. JARVIS secretly restricted the accessible information, protecting SSC’s sensitive technology and contingency plans 190 191.
Peter began noticing inconsistencies after examining a mechanical fragment associated with the Prague battle. Its construction reminded him of abandoned holographic experiments, while the inexplicable interference with his webs raised further doubts 191.
Beck then staged an alien invasion of New York with holographic drones. Peter fought on the front line, unaware that his trusted partner controlled the attack and was manipulating it to appear as the city’s savior 193 194.
The exposure of Beck’s deception devastated Peter. He blamed himself for granting access and questioned whether he deserved to remain a superhero. Lynn explained that Tony had permitted the monitored deception to continue so Peter could learn to distinguish trust from blind faith. Tony and Wanda subsequently reinforced the lesson without rejecting him 197 198.
Peter testified at Beck’s United Nations trial, acknowledging both his misplaced trust and what he had learned. Beck received a sentence of 120 years without parole 198.
Multiversal crisis
Although Peter outwardly recovered, he remained afraid that his kindness would make him vulnerable to another manipulator. He secretly asked Strange to create realistic illusions that would train his judgment through repeated experiences of betrayal and deception 199.
Peter’s conflicting desires—to grow into responsibility while escaping its pressure—interfered with Strange’s spell. The resulting crisis brought visitors from other universes into his world and created an expanding rift 200 202.
Two alternate Peter Parkers, identified as Tobey’s Peter and Andrew’s Peter, joined him. The three shared Peter’s laboratory, tracked the arrivals, and worked to contain them. After helping stabilize Sandman, Peter confessed his role in the crisis to Tony rather than continuing to hide it 200 202.
Tony responded by granting him unrestricted access to Stark Industries, SSC laboratories, equipment, and combat resources. With that support, Peter continued working with his counterparts, favoring treatment and restraint where possible. Against Doctor Octopus, he began converting part of his nanosuit into an intrusion probe so JARVIS could suppress the mechanical arms’ controlling AI 202 204.
Peter also advocated addressing each visitor’s circumstances before sending them home. His proposals included stabilizers, a replacement inhibitor chip, and a communication interface to help Eddie Brock cooperate with the symbiote without losing himself 207 209.
Strange ultimately returned the six visitors and the two alternate Spider-Men to their universes. Peter resumed ordinary life with MJ, accepting that heroism did not require sacrificing every peaceful afternoon. MJ also helped him complete his nearly forgotten MIT application 210.
Ground protection with Harley
During a lakeside vacation, Tony praised Peter’s growth and reminded him that he could rely on his family. Afterward, Peter investigated a micro-wormhole in Queens and recovered a metal fragment for Strange to examine 212.
Peter later acknowledged that Harley was better suited to succeeding Tony as a leader. Rather than change his own priorities, he chose to remain Spider-Man and focus on ordinary people. Their first joint hostage-rescue mission succeeded, with Harley directing the operation and Peter handling field action 229.
As the team prepared for Reed Richards and Kang, Peter and Harley received ground-protection duties. They installed priority signal relays in cities as Tony tightened response requirements, then remained behind to defend Earth while the Vanguard Group attacked Kang 231 233 238.
Appearance
- Civilian clothing: At his SSC recruitment, Peter wears a plaid shirt and carries an old school backpack with fraying straps 138.
- Spider-Man suit: His nanosuit forms red-and-blue armor over his body, with a closing mask that can retract to expose his face 184 187.
Personality
Peter is enthusiastic, talkative, and visibly nervous around the heroes he admires. During his first SSC visit, he struggles to keep his speaking speed under control; after sparring with Bucky, he excitedly analyzes the opponents’ teamwork even while catching his breath 138 139.
His instinct is to help before considering the consequences. Tony identifies this as both his greatest strength and a serious weakness: Peter reacts immediately to people in danger but can overlook unstable weapons, collateral damage, and his own need for support 159.
Peter also ties his self-worth closely to others’ trust. His desire for Tony’s approval helps drive his early recklessness, while Beck’s betrayal leaves him intensely self-critical. Even after learning caution, he worries more about becoming a liability to others than about facing enemies himself 157 197 199.
His later growth centers on accepting responsibility without abandoning compassion. He admits his role in the multiversal crisis, seeks solutions tailored to individual opponents, and eventually recognizes that he can remain useful without becoming Tony’s successor 202 207 229.
