Background / History
The Books Arrive at Hogwarts
Ron was already Harry Potter’s friend when reports about Allen Vane’s books began circulating. He responded to Harry’s wish for a quiet school life with a warning that a published autobiography would make privacy almost impossible 16.
When Hermione obtained copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Part One, Ron was astonished by its accuracy. After Harry confirmed its account of his childhood, Ron questioned how Allen could know those private details. He also read aloud Draco Malfoy’s remarks from the book, prompting laughter at the Gryffindor table 21.
The complete edition described Ron defeating a troll with the Levitation Charm and seeing himself as Head Boy and Quidditch captain in the Mirror of Erised. These were events described by the book, not confirmed accomplishments at that point: Molly noted that Halloween had not yet arrived 30.
The Attack on Hogwarts
During the controversy over Dumbledore’s treatment of Harry and school safety, Ron received four Howlers from his mother in one evening. His family was considering withdrawing the children from Hogwarts 43.
When Death Eaters attacked the Great Hall, Ron lunged forward to shield the disarmed Harry. An attacker stunned him, sending him crashing to the floor. Hermione later helped him up while the fox-masked Allen fought the invaders 53 55. Ron’s forehead injury required bandages, which he was still wearing after school routines resumed 63.
Before the school year ended, Ron joined Harry and Hermione in an unsuccessful search for the Mirror of Erised 65.
Ginny’s Disappearance and Dobby’s Freedom
Ron was deeply shaken by the published account of Ginny being controlled through Tom Riddle’s diary. As the students finished reading, he repeatedly muttered that it was impossible; the Weasleys then discovered that Ginny was missing 113 114.
Later, Ron helped adapt the book’s method of freeing Dobby to their changed circumstances. The real diary had already been destroyed, so he recognized that Hermione’s Muggle-made replica could serve as a substitute. He encouraged Harry to try the plan despite uncertainty over whether Lucius would recognize the replacement 139 140.
Exams and the Animated Card Reward
The chance to earn an animated card helped motivate Ron to study seriously. He put away his chess set for two weeks and rose at half past six each morning to revise History of Magic. He also admitted that he did not want to see his mother’s disappointed reaction to another poor report 144 145.
Ron placed twenty-second in his year and initially considered the result a failure. McGonagall instead singled out his considerable improvement in History of Magic and announced that students who had made significant progress could choose an animated card even without reaching the top ten. Ron selected [Quidditch Pitch] 146 147.
Before leaving Hogwarts, he invited Harry to stay at the Burrow if life with the Dursleys became unbearable. During the summer, the Weasleys won the Daily Prophet’s annual grand prize and travelled to Egypt 147 150.
Scabbers and Peter Pettigrew
A newspaper photograph of the Egyptian holiday showed Scabbers on Ron’s shoulder. Sirius Black recognized the rat as Peter Pettigrew, realized that Peter would return to Hogwarts near Harry, and escaped Azkaban to pursue him 150 189.
At Hogwarts, Dumbledore saw Peter’s name almost overlapping Ron’s on the Marauder’s Map. He checked that Ron was not an impostor, then learned that Scabbers had disappeared. Ron initially blamed Hermione’s cat, Crookshanks, but his explanation of the rat’s missing toe and long history with Percy helped Dumbledore identify Peter 165 166.
Dumbledore privately warned Ron that Scabbers was not what he seemed. Although he did not explain the full truth, the warning ended Ron’s prolonged arguments with Hermione over Crookshanks 173.
The Forbidden Forest Incident
Ron and Harry accidentally left their Magic Cards outside during Care of Magical Creatures. Worried that overnight dew would ruin the Muggle-made cards, they returned after dark with Hermione under Harry’s Invisibility Cloak 174.
After retrieving the decks, the trio encountered a mass of Dementors and fled into the Forbidden Forest. They came upon Sirius restraining Peter and were subsequently surrounded. Their attempts to repel the Dementors proved ineffective; Allen protected them with a silver stag Patronus and then scattered the creatures with [Composite: Silver Breeze and Raging Thunder] 179 180 181 184.
Ron heard Sirius explain how the Weasley family photograph had exposed Peter. McGonagall deducted fifty points from each member of the trio for their nighttime excursion, costing Gryffindor 150 points 188 189 190.
Appearance
Ron has red hair and was described in the Egyptian holiday photograph as approximately twelve or thirteen years old 150.
- Height: About half a head shorter than the older brothers standing beside him in the photograph 150.
- Temporary injury: A wounded forehead, later wrapped in bandages, following the Great Hall attack 55 63.
Personality
Ron is protective of his friends even when badly outmatched. He tried to shield Harry during the Death Eater attack, anxiously supported him after the Dementor encounter on the train, and reached for his wand when Malfoy mocked Harry for fainting 53 159 160. Despite his mother’s concerns about Hogwarts, he firmly refused to leave 162.
He often expresses frustration through jokes and exaggerated complaints, including his remarks about Harry’s lost privacy and his own low-powered Magic Card 16 141. The first book’s Mirror of Erised scene portrays a desire for recognition through school leadership and Quidditch honors 30.
Ron can work hard when strongly motivated, but sustained discipline is less reliable. His intensive exam preparation contrasted with his usual last-minute revision; the following term, Hermione challenged him for slipping back into careless work habits 145 174.
Abilities & Skills
Spellcasting
- Levitation Charm: Studies the spell with Hermione’s correction. The published first book depicts him using it to defeat a troll before that Halloween has occurred 30 63.
- Charms limitations: Struggles to recall a variation of the Levitation Charm during his first-year final exam 64.
- Patronus Charm: Attempts to repel Dementors alongside Harry and Hermione but cannot produce an effective defense against the surrounding crowd 181.
Magic Cards
Ron uses a Hogwarts Deck and combines friendship and Weasley-family bonuses to strengthen otherwise weak minions 141 142.
| Card / Combination | Effect or Use |
|---|---|
| [Ron] | A one-cost, 0/2 minion representing Ron; these are game statistics, not his actual magical strength 141 142. |
| [Harry] + [Ron] + [Hermione] | Triggers [Bond of Never Leaving or Abandoning One Another]; while together, each card gains +1/+1 every turn 142. |
| [Bond of Red Hair] | Gives all minions with “Weasley” in their names +2/+2 142. |
- Combines both bonds against Seamus, whose field contains Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle; Seamus concedes 142.
- Initially resents his card’s low statistics but appreciates the strength of the trio’s bond effect 141.
Practical Problem-Solving
- Identifies the replica Riddle diary as a usable replacement for the destroyed original in the plan to free Dobby 139.
- Uses Hermione’s notes to guide his Potions practical, although he remains worried about Snape’s marking 146.
