Background
Xia Nuoyi belongs to the direct line of the Xia Lineage, which established the Myriad Nations Trade Alliance. At its height, her family possessed enough influence to intimidate national rulers, and its resources could have uncovered even the royal secrets of the Seven Great Empires 41.
Turmoil within the alliance forced her to flee secretly to Blood Dragon City. Unable to draw on her lineage’s resources, she could no longer exercise her former intelligence-gathering reach. Her family’s precarious position also constrained her actions: when Lin Taoshu revealed that he knew of the Great Xia Merchant Alliance’s difficulties, she restrained herself rather than risk worsening the Xia Clan’s situation 30 41.
Her initial interest in Bu Wuchen centered on the Blood Dragon Birthmark over his heart. She wanted him to awaken its power and eventually lend it to her willingly. His illness and weak cultivation had made that prospect remote, but his recovery renewed her hopes 18 41.
Appearance
Xia Nuoyi has a youthful, exceptionally beautiful appearance and typically wears flowing green gauze or silk 18 22.
- Facial features: Willow-leaf brows, crimson lips, and fair skin 18 25.
- Build: Slender, with a narrow waist 41.
- Characteristic reactions: Frequently blushes when her behavior toward Bu Wuchen becomes unexpectedly affectionate or when he teases her 18 26 39 41 43.
Personality
Xia Nuoyi is proud, mischievous, and accustomed to deference. She insists on calling herself others’ “grandaunt,” regardless of their rank, and even senior academy officials avoid giving her opportunities to embarrass them publicly. Song Hechuan likewise fears provoking her, particularly when she threatens his workshop over his suspicions 22 28 40.
Her seductive “Demoness” persona is partly deliberate concealment rather than an invitation to intimacy. She is fiercely intolerant of unwanted advances; the narrative attributes her reputation in part to castrating male cultivators who behaved frivolously or disrespectfully toward her 18 41.
Bu Wuchen receives unusual patience and protection from her. She initially explains her excitement over his alchemy as hope that his strong soul power will help awaken the Blood Dragon Mark, yet she also finds herself making excuses for him, embracing him, and impulsively kissing his cheek. The narrative explicitly identifies his Spirit of First Impressions ability as a cause of her unusual feelings 18 26 33 40 41.
Abilities & Skills
Cultivation and Mystic Pressure
Xia Nuoyi is identified as a Divine Communion Realm expert, far beyond Bu Wuchen’s cultivation when they first become acquainted 23 25.
- Disperses Lü Chunyang’s mystic pressure with a casual wave during the martial-arena incident 23.
- Uses released Mystic Qi to seize Bu Wuchen’s collar and lift him several feet above the floor 22.
- Overwhelms Lin Taoshu, a Qi Control Realm Seventh Layer cultivator, leaving him unable to resist her restraint 37.
- Releases intimidating mystic pressure against Song Hechuan; this passage calls her cultivation “Divine Soul Realm” 29.
Ice Manipulation
She precisely shapes and directs ice crystals, using them for both delicate displays and restraint 18 37.
- Forms her name from floating ice crystals, then shatters the characters into drifting snow 18.
- Freezes Lin Taoshu’s legs to the ground when he attempts to escape his blood-pact obligations 37.
- Directs cold force into the major acupoints of his legs while lifting him into the air 37.
- Her restraint is not unbreakable: Lin Yunba melts the ice holding Lin Taoshu 37.
Poison Recognition and Purification
Xia Nuoyi recognizes the purple-blooded heavenly toad miasma on banknotes thrown toward Bu Wuchen and purges it with water-type mystic force 39.
- Intercepts the notes before Bu Wuchen touches them 39.
- Identifies the poison as fatal to cultivators below the Divine Communion Realm 39.
- Removes every remaining trace before returning the money to him 39.
Cultivation Guidance
She advises Bu Wuchen to choose fire as his mystic-power attribute upon reaching the Qi Control Realm, judging it compatible with his cultivation technique and alchemy 43.
- Connects his demonstrated soul strength with a greater chance of awakening the Blood Dragon Birthmark 26.
- Warns him against advancing without considering which attribute will support his pill-refining future 43.
Equipment & Resources
- Storage ring — Holds items she can retrieve with a wave of her hand 43.
- Mystic crystals — Gives Bu Wuchen three high-grade, superior-quality crystals with wind, lightning, and poison attributes to help restore his cultivation 43.
- Protective arrangements — Provides Bu Wuchen’s household with a nearby residence and arranges a bodyguard so Wan Xiaoyao and A Chun can be protected more easily 18.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Protecting Bu Wuchen’s Household
After the wager duel, masked attackers attempt to abduct Wan Xiaoyao and A Chun outside the academy. An expert associated with Xia Nuoyi intervenes. She also arranges accommodation near the academy, primarily to secure Bu Wuchen’s future cooperation in using the Blood Dragon Mark 18.
Introducing Bu Wuchen to the Song Clan Pill Workshop
When Bu Wuchen claims he can refine pills, Xia Nuoyi offers him a place to prove it and promises help against Lin Taoshu. She takes him to Song Hechuan’s workshop and secures use of a cauldron 23 24.
His decision to refine fifteen sets of ingredients with ordinary charcoal initially infuriates her. After he produces a full yield of fifteen Healing Pills, she excitedly embraces him. She subsequently supports his plan against Lin Taoshu and carries him home when he falls asleep from exhaustion 24 25 26 29.
The Pill Hall Confrontation
Xia Nuoyi uses her honorary vice-dean position to bring Song Hechuan into the academy and confronts Lin Taoshu over his refusal to examine Bu Wuchen. Lin’s knowledge of her family’s troubles temporarily checks her ability to intervene directly 29 30.
During the ensuing alchemy duel, she publicly defends Bu Wuchen’s apparent inactivity as “going easy” on Lin, despite privately doubting the explanation. After his victory, she stops Lin Taoshu from fleeing, shields Bu Wuchen from Lin Yunba, and prevents the poisoned-banknote assassination attempt 33 37 39.
Growing Closeness and Further Support
Impressed by Bu Wuchen’s determination to avenge himself personally, Xia Nuoyi offers to help fight the Lin Lineage and impulsively kisses his cheek. Zhou Wan’en interrupts the moment, leaving her deeply embarrassed 41.
Bu Wuchen later offers to refine pills for her without a fee while he remains in Blood Dragon City, provided she supplies the ingredients. She gives him the three mystic crystals she possesses, but afterward realizes that he has again avoided revealing his background or the origin of his Blood Dragon Mark 42 43 44.
Relationships
- Bu Wuchen — Initially a prospective source of the Blood Dragon Mark’s power; becomes someone she openly calls a friend and repeatedly protects. Their teasing develops into physical affection, but no formal romantic relationship is established in these passages 18 39 41 43.
- Wan Xiaoyao and A Chun — Beneficiaries of her protection and housing arrangements. She reassures them when she brings the exhausted Bu Wuchen home 18 29.
- Unnamed young bodyguard — A separate woman associated with the protection Xia Nuoyi arranges for Bu Wuchen’s household; Wan Xiaoyao calls her “Bodyguard Sister” 18 44.
- Song Hechuan — Workshop owner who treats her with pronounced deference. She introduces Bu Wuchen to him but objects when he recruits the young alchemist without consulting her 23 26 28.
- Zhou Wan’en — Academy head and colleague who knows her mischievous temperament well enough to retreat rather than become the target of her teasing 40 41.
- Lin Taoshu and Lin Yunba — Adversaries in the Pill Hall dispute. Lin Taoshu exploits knowledge of her lineage’s weakness, while Lin Yunba’s attempt to poison Bu Wuchen is thwarted by her intervention 30 37 39.
