Background

Daoist Yansong is a Qingcheng Mountain Taoist of the Quanzhen Longmen lineage who cultivates the internal elixir path. He had practiced for more than fifty years before meeting Gu Zhao, retaining Mana and Internal Breath True Qi despite the modern world's sparse Spiritual Qi. His long service at Taishang Laojun Pavilion earned him considerable seniority and respect among local Taoists. 36 46 51

Gu Zhao encounters Yansong while visiting Qingcheng Mountain with Jiang Shishi and Xiao Ya. Yansong immediately recognizes Gu Zhao's ability to create genuinely consecrated talismans, then demonstrates how Mana can be infused into talismans and magic artifacts. 36 37

After learning of Gu Zhao's access to the other world, Yansong readily accepts the chance to confront its demons and ghosts. Gu Zhao gives him a Thunder Seed, activating his Innate Qi and allowing him to cultivate through Malevolent Qi harvested from evil beings. 46 47 57

He becomes one of Grand Luo Palace's earliest and most dependable senior Daoists. His cultivation, battlefield experience, and willingness to act independently allow him to investigate threats, lead formations, recruit potential allies, and protect civilians in both worlds. 150 186 365 583

Appearance

Yansong is an elderly Daoist with white hair and beard, typically dressed in Daoist robes and a Hunyuan Daoist cap. When he intervenes in Kabia, witnesses describe him as an ethereal old Taoist in a sky-blue robe. 365

  • Wears a Hunyuan scarf or Daoist cap as part of his usual attire. 52 365
  • Carries face-changing masks concealed within his costume. 52
  • Keeps a long sword at his waist, including a Seven Stars Sword used in combat. 49 116
  • Alters his face into colored opera-style masks before or during battle. 48 52

Personality

Yansong is playful, sociable, and fond of teasing others. He watches short dramas, jokes during life-threatening fights, and openly admits that his intimidating masks are partly meant to shake an opponent's confidence. 36 49 52

Beneath his humor is a deeply held sense of Daoist duty. He believes that cultivators should eliminate evil, accumulate merit, and protect ordinary people rather than merely pursue longevity. His enthusiasm for Gu Zhao's plans stems from seeing the other world as an opportunity to spread the Daoist faith while confronting monsters and ghosts. 47 99 280

He is also pragmatic and adaptable. Although trained in the Quanzhen tradition rather than Zhengyi ritual arts, he willingly studies additional techniques needed to survive in the other world. 47

Abilities & Skills

Taiyi Windfire

Yansong's signature art combines the Quanzhen Longmen Sect's Great Elixir Direct Guidance with Qingcheng Mountain's Taiyi Fire Mansion Secret Method. His internal water generates wood, wood generates wind, and wind fuels fire, allowing wind and flame to reinforce one another. 49

  • Blows away ghost mist with spiritually charged wind. 48 49
  • Continuously exhales wind and fire through a full breath without interrupting his speech. 49
  • Forms walls, vortices, and tornadoes of flame to trap or suppress enemies. 50 111
  • Uses windfire to counter poisonous mist and dense Malevolent Qi. 152 583
  • Can shape fire into a circling firebird. 99
  • His windfire can be amplified by Gu Zhao's Supreme Clarity Spirit Transformation Talisman. 50 110 116

Wind Manipulation and Flight

Yansong can generate and direct powerful winds, initially through whistling and later through advanced Daoist techniques.

  • Creates gales strong enough to scatter mist, drive back bandits, and control the battlefield. 48 101
  • Levitates by riding a clear breeze after his breakthrough. 150
  • Assists in gathering clouds and moisture to fight a mountain fire. 163
  • Travels at speeds exceeding sound while enveloped in Grand Unity Divine Wind. 365
  • Uses Grand Unity Divine Wind to disarm and scatter armed soldiers. 366

Qingcheng Swordplay

Yansong has practiced Qingcheng martial arts and swordsmanship for decades. Once empowered by Mana, his sword techniques become effective against demons and ghosts. 52

  • Is proficient with the Seven Stars Sword and Howling Cloud Sword. 52
  • Channels flame through his sword to create a flaming blade. 116 117
  • Uses wind-enhanced movement to attack with evasive, difficult-to-track swordplay. 117
  • Can produce seven sword blossoms to break an enemy's demonic attacks. 117

Face-Changing

Yansong has modified the Sichuan face-changing art with Mana, allowing him to switch among seven masks instantaneously. 52

  • Uses a blue mask to create a solemn, eerie presence. 48 52
  • Treats the black mask as a sign that he is fighting at full strength. 52
  • Uses the yellow mask when drawing his sword. 52
  • Uses masks to raise allied morale and intimidate enemies before spell duels. 52

Consecration and Daoist Instruction

Yansong possesses practical knowledge of Mana circulation, talisman consecration, and traditional Daoist cultivation.

  • Recognizes genuine consecrated talismans and Gu Zhao's unusual talent for creating them. 37
  • Demonstrates consecration with a Jade Ruyi. 37
  • Explains that Mana may be circulated through the body or infused into talismans and magic artifacts. 37
  • Guides younger cultivators on the value of combining spellcraft with martial arts. 52

Manifested Divine Power

By the Kabia incident, Yansong can employ his cultivation openly on a large scale.

  • Suspends hundreds of incoming bullets in midair. 366
  • Redirects the bullets precisely enough to slice off the shooters' earlobes. 366
  • Heals two ill civilians with a wave of his hand. 366
  • Incinerates Grand Commander Kabia with a spark during the later confrontation. 538

  • Jade Ruyi — Used to demonstrate consecration. 37
  • Turtle shell magic treasure — A defensive treasure he learned to activate with True Qi; it withstands Gu Zhao's Palm Thunder. 99

Relationships

  • Gu Zhao — Fellow cultivator and Grand Luo Palace's Sect Leader. Yansong teaches Gu Zhao about consecration, receives a Thunder Seed from him, and becomes one of his most trusted partners in demon-slaying operations. 37 46 150
