Background / History
Servitude and the System
Duan Lang initially admired Xiongba, whose abilities he had witnessed at Lingyun Cave, and hoped to become his disciple. Xiongba instead favored Nie Feng and Bu Jingyun because of Mud Buddha’s prophecy. Relegated to servitude, Duan Lang continued practicing martial arts daily and regarded his low status as a humiliation to his family 297 298.
Xu Xiao secretly implanted the Myriad Worlds Martial Arts System while Duan Lang was sweeping. Duan Lang concealed its voice from the overseer and accepted its promise to help him become the strongest under heaven. His first mission required him to leave servitude and become a formal society member within one month 297 298.
Over the following five years, he became Xiongba’s disciple and the Tianxia Society’s youngest hall master. His achievements were substantial enough that Xiongba could not withhold recognition without damaging morale. Success also made Duan Lang increasingly unwilling to remain subordinate 298 299.
Lingyun Cave
Assigned to investigate a mysterious martial-world force, Duan Lang abandoned Xiongba’s instructions to pursue a system quest in Lingyun Cave. He hoped its rewards would give him enough strength to escape Xiongba’s control 299.
Inside, he recovered the Fire Qilin Sword, consumed Blood Bodhi, and memorized the Nie family’s Six Secrets of Aohan. He then destroyed Nie Ying’s writings and the martial arts carvings, harvested every remaining fruit, and cut apart the Blood Bodhi vine to deny others the same opportunities 300 301.
After driving away the Fire Qilin, his unsuccessful pursuit brought him to Wu Wudi’s Black Tortoise True Skill. He studied the inheritance and later blocked the cave entrance with rubble, further restricting access to its treasures 303 305.
Seizing the Tianxia Society
Returning after just over half a month away, Duan Lang openly challenged Xiongba’s authority and declared that he would settle the dispute with Peerless City himself. Their confrontation became a public battle in which Xiongba was clearly outmatched 304.
Duan Lang humiliated Xiongba by shaving away his beard and hair before accepting his surrender. Although he appeared to grant the former leader permission to leave, he stabbed him through the heart as he turned away, securing control of the Tianxia Society 305.
Peerless City
Seven days after taking power, Duan Lang arrived to challenge Sword Saint Dugu. He rejected the Sword Saint’s condemnation of his evil Qi, arguing that power—not claims of righteousness—determined who could judge the martial world 306 307.
Their duel escalated into attacks that killed onlookers and drove others mad. When Xiao Sanxiao intervened, both refused his mediation and attacked him. The ensuing battle reduced Peerless City to ruins within half an hour 308 309.
Hunt for the Buddha’s Chosen
Seeking the system’s promised Dao of Physical Immortality, Duan Lang tracked Huixian to a small Jiangnan city and attacked him. Huixian’s defenses resisted his conventional swordsmanship, forcing him to rely on Evil Flame Slash and eventually surrender further to evil Qi 312 313 314.
Sword Saint Dugu and Jian Chen joined the pursuit. Although rivals, the three cooperated when Huixian revealed strength none could overcome alone. Their combined attacks wore down his Sanskrit defenses, prompting him to invoke the Buddha’s True Body 314 315.
The divine consciousness possessing Huixian defeated them and searched Duan Lang for foreign power, suffering a backlash. Xu Xiao’s avatar, Xu Xuanpin, then took control of Duan Lang’s body to confront it. During the subsequent negotiations, Xu Xiao drained Duan Lang, Sword Saint Dugu, Jian Chen, and Jue Wushen through their Seeds of Desire 316 317 318.
Appearance
- Face and build: A handsome youth with an upright bearing, swordlike brows, bright “starry” eyes, and somewhat narrow cheeks that give him a slightly mean look 299.
- Hair: Short, reaching his ears 299.
- Hall master attire: Close-fitting, deep-blue martial clothing and a cold demeanor 299.
- Society leader attire: Black-and-gold martial clothing, with the Fire Qilin Sword worn at his waist 306.
- After Lingyun Cave: Appears more mature, with an increasingly sinister expression 304.
- Demonized state: Dark-green eyes and evil Qi visibly coursing beneath his skin; Huixian’s attack leaves his outer robes shredded, exposing his soft armor 313.
Personality
Duan Lang begins as diligent, ambitious, and capable of enduring humiliation for a long-term goal. Even after exhausting servant work, he trains in the stables rather than abandoning martial arts. Xu Xiao values his ability to seize opportunities and tolerate hardship 297 298.
Early fame feeds his vanity and turns ambition into arrogance, cruelty, and a desire to dominate. He treasures exclusive advantages: after learning from Lingyun Cave’s inheritances, he destroys them rather than allow another person to benefit. He also enjoys humiliating former superiors, though Xiongba’s submission ultimately leaves him disappointed rather than satisfied 299 301 305.
His pride is inseparable from resentment over destiny. He rejects Xiongba’s reliance on prophecy while treating his own system-assisted successes as proof that heaven favors him. Being denied that status enrages him. His refusal to forgive provocation—and willingness to accept corruption for revenge—helps drive his demonization 303 305 313 316.
Abilities & Skills
Sun-Eclipsing Sword Technique
His inherited family sword art remains his principal discipline before obtaining Black Tortoise True Skill 298 300.
- Named moves include Sun Pours to Fullness, White Sun Breaks the Dawn, Sun Sits in the City of Sorrow, Sword Stacking Radiance, and Raging Fire Scorches the Plain 303 304 308.
- Sun Pours to Fullness leaves lingering sword intent suited to prolonged combat 303.
- The technique is particularly well matched to the Fire Qilin Sword 300.
Six Meridian Divine Sword
The system grants him the Shao Shang Sword Manual, whose Qi-circulation instructions he quickly understands 298.
- Produces sharp, intangible Sword Qi 298.
- Used alongside his family swordsmanship against the Fire Qilin 303.
Black Tortoise True Skill
Wu Wudi’s inheritance greatly expands his martial repertoire and is central to his victory over Xiongba 303 304.
- Incorporates sword techniques as well as punches, palm strikes, and kicks 305.
- A sudden switch to its swordsmanship catches Xiongba off guard 305.
- Includes Heavenly Destiny Sword Dao, used against Huixian 313.
- Acts as a catalyst for his evil-Qi corruption; it is not the main source of the vast evil Qi he later manifests 307 308.
Internal Energy-Powered Magic
System instruction allows Duan Lang to cast spells using Internal Energy without first learning to enter the Dao through martial arts 303.
- His fire spirit spell absorbs the Fire Qilin’s flames and prevents them from reaching him 303.
- These spells retain their power but consume more energy, making them useful as costly finishing moves 303.
- His study of magic also provides the foundation for manipulating evil Qi 308.
Evil Flame Slash
A self-developed sword technique that uses his distinctive evil Qi as a catalyst 308.
- Meets the Sword Saint’s mental Sword Twenty-Three attack head-on despite Duan Lang lacking a dedicated method for wielding mental power 308.
- Destabilizes Huixian’s Ten Thousand Buddhas Golden Body, dissipating the devout figures within it where ordinary sword attacks fail 313.
- Its clash with the Sword Saint’s attack spreads harmful effects to nearby spectators 308.
Seed of Desire and Demonization
A seven-colored Seed of Desire, disguised as his system, converts his desires into profound Internal Energy 313.
- Converts intense killing intent into additional power during the battle with Huixian 313.
- Works alongside the world’s tribulation-linked evil Qi, which increasingly corrodes his meridians, heart, brain, and judgment 308 313.
- Ultimately gives Xu Xiao the means to drain him 318.
Six Secrets of Aohan
Duan Lang memorizes the Nie family’s art from Lingyun Cave but cannot practice it at the time because its attributes conflict with his own cultivation 301.
- Retains it as martial knowledge before destroying the original carvings 301.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Fire Qilin Sword — Blood-red Duan family heirloom recovered beside an ancestral skeleton. Duan Lang initially does not recognize the ancestor or understand why the weapon feels familiar 300.
- System-rewarded sword — A tough, high-tech composite-metal weapon capable of cutting iron. Discarded in favor of the superior Fire Qilin Sword 300.
- Blood Bodhi — Fruit that rapidly increases Internal Energy but produces excessive internal heat when repeatedly consumed. He harvests the entire remaining crop 300 301.
- Close-fitting soft armor — Remains on his body after Huixian’s giant-palm attack destroys his outer clothing 313.
- Charcoal pencil — Used to mark explored passages and reduce the risk of becoming lost in Lingyun Cave 300.
Relationships
- Duan Shuai — Father and source of his family martial heritage; Duan Lang initially believes Xiongba is the stronger fighter 297 298.
- Xu Xiao — Hidden creator of his system and architect of his accelerated rise. Watches and guides him through the system, then ultimately drains him 297 303 318.
- Xiongba — Childhood idol, later master and superior. Duan Lang resents his favoritism toward Wind and Cloud, usurps his position, and kills him after accepting his surrender 297 301 305.
- Nie Feng and Bu Jingyun — Rivals favored by Mud Buddha’s prophecy. Duan Lang surpasses their early achievements and takes opportunities originally associated with Nie Feng 299 300 303.
- Wen Chouchou — Former tormentor who forced him to choose between death and servitude. Duan Lang later uses his hall master position to pressure and belittle him 299.
- Jian Chen — Martial rival who once fought him to a draw; later a temporary ally against Huixian 302 315.
- Sword Saint Dugu — Rival who condemns his corruption and battles him at Peerless City. Their later cooperation against Huixian does not erase their mutual suspicion 307 314 315.
- Xiao Sanxiao — Would-be mediator whose intervention Duan Lang rejects, leading to a destructive confrontation 308 309.
- Huixian — Target of the physical-immortality quest. His defenses and counterattacks push Duan Lang into deeper demonization 312 313 314.
