The death warriors looked to Wei Chengye for instructions.
Wei Chengye burst out laughing. "Weren't you stubborn and defiant? How come you know to beg for mercy today?"
Wei Mingxiu hurriedly dropped to his knees. "I didn't know any better before. I offended you, third brother. Please be magnanimous and don't hold it against me!"
Seeing him like this, Wei Chengye felt the resentment that had weighed on his heart for so many years finally lift.
"What a pity, sixth brother. You learned your lesson too late."
He waved the death warriors aside, dismounted, drew his sword, and walked toward Wei Mingxiu.
Wei Mingxiu had been running for so long, and he was wounded. His face was now as pale as paper. He struggled to his feet, but his sword hand was trembling.
"Third brother, must you really take things this far?"
He almost shouted, "Do you have to kill me?!"
"Yes!" Wei Chengye raised his sword. "I told you, you're going to die today!"
With that, he thrust his sword at Wei Mingxiu!
Wei Mingxiu struggled to raise his hand and block, fighting as he retreated, but he had exhausted himself.
After a dozen or so exchanges, his sword was knocked to the ground.
Wei Chengye's sword plunged straight into his chest!
The sound of the blade piercing flesh made one's scalp tingle.
Blood spilling from his mouth, Wei Mingxiu grasped the sword's hilt with both hands and fell to his knees. He looked up at Wei Chengye and cried out mournfully, "Third brother..."
Wei Chengye looked down at Wei Mingxiu with cold contempt, expecting to see despair on his face as he lay dying.
He had even prepared some final words of mockery.
But then Wei Mingxiu's expression suddenly changed. His lips curled up, and he laughed.
He said softly to Wei Chengye, "Look behind me..."
"Your Highness! What are you doing?!" Qian Zhong, commander of the Imperial Guards, was the first to arrive.
Zhou Ye, Wei Zhao, and a group of soldiers and officials followed close behind!
Galloping hooves came to a halt, and everyone stared in disbelief at the scene before them!
"Your Highness!" When Zhou Ye saw Wei Mingxiu covered in blood, his breath stopped for a moment.
He hurriedly dismounted and raced over.
He caught Wei Mingxiu and pressed his other hand over the wound, his voice trembling.
"Your wound is too severe... too severe..."
Wei Mingxiu was briefly stunned by his expression.
After all, he had never seen Zhou Ye so flustered.
The Zhou Ye he knew, General Zhou, Junior Preceptor Zhou, had always had everything under control.
He never panicked over anyone or anything, yet now his eyes had reddened with distress because of him.
Wei Mingxiu wanted to say a few words to comfort Zhou Ye, but this was clearly not the time for that.
So he could only squeeze Zhou Ye's hand discreetly.
Then he raised his voice again and said to Wei Chengye in front of everyone, "Third brother, you told me there were wild foxes here and brought me hunting, but cough, cough... but as soon as we arrived, you killed my horse, then treated me like prey and shot arrows at me. You chased me all this way, and when I couldn't run anymore, I begged you for mercy, but you dismounted and stabbed me..."
"Just because my mother was of low birth, just because I inadvertently offended you with a few words in the past, you treated me like this... you wanted to kill me so badly..."
"Do you really, really hate me that much?"
After confronting Wei Chengye, he turned to Wei Zhao. His voice trembled, and tears fell as he spoke. "Father, Imperial Father, although you have always been strict with me, I know it was for my own good, and I know you must care for me..."
"So I beg you to uphold justice for me today, Imperial Father!"
Blood had already soaked through Wei Mingxiu's clothes. His face deathly pale, the youth gazed deep into Wei Zhao's eyes and choked out,
"Imperial Father, please..."
"Have pity on me..."
Zhou Ye: I'm panicking.
Xiuxiu: It's okay, I'm acting.
