Background / History

The Zhang Family’s Downfall

Born Zhang Yunqian, Yun Shen belonged to a family close to the Feng Family. Fifteen years before his alliance with Zhou Ye, Emperor Chaoyang, Wei Zhao, destroyed the Zhang Family through accusations of corruption and treason. Yun Shen witnessed his parents’ execution; the family’s property was confiscated, its women were forced into prostitution, and its men were exiled 11 12 23 29.

His childhood friend Feng Chenyi knelt before Grand Preceptor Feng for three days and nights, pleading for intervention. The grand preceptor could only prevent the entire clan from being executed. Too young to understand the limits of the Feng Family’s influence, Yun Shen blamed them for failing to save his parents. When Feng Chenyi came to see him off into exile, Yun Shen cursed him and cut a piece from his robe to sever their friendship 23.

Less than half a year later, a fire at a relay station led Feng Chenyi to believe Yunqian had died. The body he went to identify was burned beyond recognition, and he found no trace of his friend during the following fifteen years 29.

Life as Yun Shen

Yun Shen escaped from exile at the risk of his life. The master of Chongming House took him in and taught him martial arts and survival skills. He eventually became the organization’s master himself, secretly took control of the Jade Fragrance House, and used it as a base to recruit jianghu talent and develop an extensive intelligence network 11 12.

Clearing his father’s name and freeing his surviving clansmen from their inherited disgrace became his central purpose. He concealed his origins from outsiders for fifteen years, fearing that exposure would destroy everything he had built 12.

As he grew older, Yun Shen recognized that the Feng Family could not have prevented his family’s downfall. His resentment toward Feng Chenyi became guilt, but he continued avoiding him, preferring to let him believe Zhang Yunqian was dead 23.

Appearance

Yun Shen is celebrated as an unrivaled beauty in the capital, attracting wealthy admirers willing to pay enormous sums merely to meet him 11.

  • Eyes: Foxlike, with slightly upturned corners 11 12.
  • Hair: Long and black; he wears it loosely pinned with a wooden hairpin after removing his assassin’s disguise 29 36.
  • Birthmark: A crescent-shaped mark behind his ear, familiar to Feng Chenyi from childhood 29.
  • Clothing: Introduced wearing a purple, wide-sleeved robe embroidered with gold 11.
  • Bearing: His former scholarly refinement has given way to a worldly, deliberately seductive manner associated with the pleasure quarters 36.

Personality

Yun Shen is teasing, flirtatious, and highly selective about his company. He receives guests according to his own interest rather than their wealth: someone who intrigues him may meet him without payment, while an unwanted visitor cannot buy his attention. With Zhou Ye, he enjoys suggestive banter and remains unembarrassed even after losing their sparring matches 11 27.

Beneath that ease, he is guarded about his identity and sensitive to being treated as socially inferior. Zhou Ye’s refusal to threaten him—and willingness to speak with him as an equal—helps win his trust. Wei Mingxiu’s respectful request to call him “teacher” likewise moves him because the prince knows him publicly as a courtesan 12 27.

His hatred of Wei Zhao can overwhelm his usual composure. During the Qingming procession, an operation intended to create a disturbance becomes a genuine attempt at revenge. His feelings toward Feng Chenyi are more hesitant: he wants to apologize, but guilt and unresolved affection keep him from acknowledging his identity 29 36 38.

Abilities & Skills

Intelligence Gathering

Yun Shen leads Chongming House, described as the largest intelligence organization in the jianghu, with the Jade Fragrance House serving as an operational base 11.

  • Recruits talented people from the jianghu and maintains informants throughout the capital 11 26.
  • Obtains information about Zhao Hai’s killing of Bai Qingyu despite Zhao Junze’s efforts to suppress the news 21 22.
  • Investigates Kou Yuan’s contacts and activities over more than a decade while pursuing the Zhang Family case 38.

Martial Arts and Internal Energy

Trained by his predecessor at Chongming House, Yun Shen is a skilled martial artist and swordsman 11 12.

  • Crushes a wine cup with internal energy 11.
  • Cuts through guards’ spears and breaks into the imperial carriage during the Qingming attack 29.
  • Continues fighting after receiving a shoulder wound 29.
  • Limit: Loses to Zhou Ye in sparring; Zhou Ye’s battlefield experience makes his fighting more ferocious 27.

Medicine and Poisons

Yun Shen claims that his skill with poisons surpasses his martial arts. He is also proficient in medicine and supplies materials used to restore Wei Mingxiu’s health 11 12 13.

  • Provides medicinal wine for bruising and circulation, along with pills that regulate qi and blood 12.
  • Supplies medical and poison manuals, poisons, medicines, and defensive equipment through Zhou Ye 24 26 27.
  • Annotates Wei Mingxiu’s questions individually and recognizes the prince’s independent insight into difficult texts 27.

Disguise and Voice Imitation

Yun Shen uses disguise and impersonation to conceal identities and support covert operations 23 27 29.

  • Imitates Zhou Ye’s voice convincingly enough to speak to Zhou Da through a closed door, creating an alibi while Zhou Ye delivers a secret letter 23.
  • Uses a human-skin mask and changes his clothing and hairstyle to escape after the Qingming attack 29.
  • Plants people among the crowd to assist his withdrawal amid the confusion 30.
  • Limit: His crescent birthmark remains recognizable even while his face is disguised 29.

Qin Performance

His qin playing is described as surpassing that of the finest palace musicians 11.

  • Performs as the Jade Fragrance House’s most sought-after male courtesan 11.
  • Combines music with voice imitation to make it appear that he and Zhou Ye are together while Zhou Ye is elsewhere 23.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Concealed armory: Hidden behind a wall opened by turning a vase three times to the right. It contains numerous conventional weapons, hidden weapons, and poisons—enough to equip a twenty-person assassin team 23.
  • Sword: Used in the attack on Wei Zhao’s carriage during the Qingming procession 29.
  • Human-skin mask and black cloak: Conceal his identity before and during the assassination attempt 28 29.
  • Medical and poison texts: Passed to Wei Mingxiu through Zhou Ye; their anatomical knowledge also informs the prince’s combat training 26 39.

Relationships

  • Zhang Jingming — Father and former minister of revenue. Restoring his reputation is Yun Shen’s lifelong objective 12 14.
  • Former master of Chongming House — Rescuer and mentor who sheltered him after his escape from exile 12.
  • Feng Chenyi — Childhood friend and later romantic interest. Yun Shen comes to regard him as an unattainable “white moonlight,” but avoids revealing himself because of guilt and the hatred burdening his life. An author’s note identifies them as a couple while stating that their romance will remain ambiguous 23 31 38.
  • Zhou Ye — Friend and political partner. Their apparent romance provides cover for frequent meetings; Zhou Ye explicitly promises not to use him as a disposable pawn or force a reconciliation with Feng Chenyi 14 36.
  • Wei Mingxiu — The prince he agrees to support and indirectly instructs in medicine and poisons. He declines the title of teacher, asking the prince simply to call him Yun Shen 12 27.
  • Sister Cui — Madam of the Jade Fragrance House, who manages access to him and reports on visitors 11.
  • Wei Zhao / Emperor Chaoyang — Enemy responsible for the Zhang Family’s destruction and the target of his revenge 11 29 37.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Alliance with Zhou Ye

Zhou Ye gains Yun Shen’s attention by defending his right to refuse visitors, then reveals that he knows both his position in Chongming House and his Zhang Family origins. He offers to overturn the old conviction in exchange for intelligence and support for Wei Mingxiu’s bid for the throne 11.

Yun Shen accepts after assessing the prince’s character and Zhou Ye’s sincerity, while reserving the right to make an additional, unspecified request. They deliberately encourage rumors of intimacy, giving their meetings a plausible public explanation and helping Zhou Ye cultivate an idle, unambitious image 12 14.

Exposing the Zhao Family

Yun Shen’s surveillance uncovers Zhao Hai’s murder of Bai Qingyu. He endorses Zhou Ye’s decision to involve Feng Chenyi, lends him a bow and arrows, and impersonates his voice while he delivers the information 21 22 23.

When the Zhao Family later plans to smuggle Zhao Hai out of prison during the Qingming procession, Yun Shen volunteers to pose as an assassin. The disturbance will provide grounds to search the procession and expose the escape scheme 27.

Qingming Assassination Attempt

Encountering Feng Chenyi before the attack nearly breaks Yun Shen’s resolve to conceal his identity. Feng Chenyi notices his birthmark and calls him “Zhang Yunqian,” but Yun Shen leaves without acknowledging the name 28 29.

Seeing Wei Zhao brings back memories of his parents’ execution. Yun Shen fights into the imperial carriage despite being wounded, exceeding the planned diversion. Zhou Ye intervenes to give him a retreat, and Feng Chenyi shields him while he removes his disguise. His escape allows the search that uncovers Zhao Hai hidden among the sacrificial offerings 29 30 31.

Evidence for the Zhang Family Case

After the Qingming incident, Zhou Ye brings a grieving Feng Chenyi to drink with Yun Shen. Yun Shen welcomes him but admits privately that he cannot yet acknowledge their past 35 36.

That night, Feng Chenyi drunkenly reveals what the Feng Family has learned: Wei Zhao colluded with Chu, diverted state money and grain, ceded a city in exchange for help eliminating Prince Li, and made Zhang Jingming the scapegoat. For Yun Shen, who has sustained his father’s innocence through faith alone, the disclosure offers the prospect of evidence. He subsequently shares the information with Zhou Ye and investigates Kou Yuan as the remaining lead 37 38.
