From collapsing and vomiting after killing his first monster to ignoring the splashing blood and flying chunks of shattered organs, Sun Fei was now covered in blood and felt as though he were undergoing a hellish trial of blood and fire. In just a few hours, his nerves had grown incredibly tough, and he was becoming a cold-blooded killing machine.
This was a game that existed for killing.
It was fucking realistic.
Even the pain felt incredibly real.
Sun Fei didn't know whether dying in this realistic game world would really mean permanent death. He didn't dare try it, because the consequences might be more than he could bear.
During the past three-plus hours of killing, Sun Fei had discovered that some of what he knew from the computer game didn't seem entirely accurate in this realistic world. He was gradually figuring out how this world worked.
In this cruel and bloody world, a barbarian's [strength] and [vitality] points were extremely important-enough strength guaranteed powerful attacks, while abundant stamina not only reduced fatigue during endless killing but also allowed him to shake off bloodthirsty monsters when fleeing.
As for putting skill points into [Axe Mastery] and [Howl], that was because the only weapon he had was an axe, and he had to make sure the rusty axe could deliver the power it should. [Howl], meanwhile, could frighten monsters and send them scattering when he was surrounded.
Constantly faced with threats to his survival, Sun Fei could no longer consider his character's future development. His first priority was staying alive.
After spending all his points, Sun Fei opened his status panel-
Player: Sun Fei. Character: Barbarian. Level: 5 Experience: 1494922680 Strength: 45 Dexterity: 20 Vitality: 30 Energy: 11 Attack damage: 10-27 Attack rating: 102 Defense: 31 Stamina: 107 Life: 105 Mana: 16 Fire resistance: 0 Cold resistance: 0 Lightning resistance: 5 Poison resistance: 0
These stats were a hell of a lot better than his initial blank-slate stats. It was practically a qualitative leap.
Of course, not all of the increases came from leveling up.
Some came from special equipment.
During the bloody slaughter, Sun Fei had collected quite a bit of equipment dropped by monsters and put it all on. One piece, the [Tangerine Cap of Energy], had attributes of 1 energy and 5% lightning resistance, so his mana and lightning resistance had also increased somewhat.
After checking his personal stats, Sun Fei opened his inventory.
In this world, the inventory Sun Fei had received was a magical spatial container, something like a spatial ring. It had forty slots in total, and each slot could hold an item such as a [minor healing potion]. Larger pieces of equipment, such as helmets and swords, naturally took up a few more slots.
Sun Fei's inventory was currently full.
After thinking it over, he used the [Scroll of Town Portal] the game had given him when his character was created. With a soft hum, a blue mass of light over three meters tall appeared beside him. He hesitated, then stepped inside.
The next second, Sun Fei appeared in the [Rogue Encampment].
Using the [Scroll of Town Portal] felt strange, a little like passing through a tunnel in spacetime. Sun Fei closed his eyes and savored the sensation for a moment, then got his bearings and found Sister Akara again.
Besides giving out quests, this senior sister was also a penny-pinching dealer in weapons and equipment. Sun Fei decided to replace his equipment before formally heading to the [Den of Evil] to clear out its monsters and complete his first game quest. That might improve his chances and keep him from being hunted down or torn apart by monsters in the [Den of Evil], because there was a mini-boss there.
The same consideration was why he had stayed out in the wilderness leveling up to level 5.
The truth was important, but staying alive to learn it was even more important.
Sun Fei sold all the things he had collected from monster drops but didn't need, including several bottles of exploding gas, javelins, a broken mage's staff, leather boots, and gloves. He got over 800 gold coins for them, bringing his total to more than 1,400 when added to the coins previously dropped by monsters.
With those coins, he bought some equipment from Akara-
A two-handed great axe with 6-15 attack damage and a suit of leather armor with 13 defense. He equipped both, then bought several minor healing potions, four [Scrolls of Town Portal], and three [Scrolls of Identify], giving himself a complete equipment makeover.
It gave him the satisfying feeling of trading a peashooter for a cannon.
Only then did he return to the huge blue portal created by the earlier [Scroll of Town Portal].
Hum, hum, hum!
With a soft sound, Sun Fei returned to the monster-infested [Blood Moor]. He found the direction of the [Den of Evil] on his minimap and strode toward it, gripping his great axe.
As it turned out, Sun Fei's earlier caution paid off.
In this world, the monsters occupying the cave seemed a little more vicious than those roaming the wilderness outside. Besides the common [Quill Rats], [zombies], [Fallen], and [Fallen Shamans] who could cast fireballs, the [Den of Evil] also contained a kind of enormous gorilla-like monster called a [Gargantuan Beast]. These creatures were thick-skinned and tough, and their attacks were powerful.
Sun Fei began clearing out the cave.
Having reached level 5, with his attack and defense greatly increased, Sun Fei swept through the cave, slaughtering monsters as easily as chopping vegetables. He encountered almost no resistance.
Blood splashed, monsters howled, and the killing continued.
Drenched in blood, Sun Fei swung his two-handed great axe like a god of slaughter, killing every monster in his path. When he encountered a group of monsters, he would charge into their midst and use the barbarian's [Howl] skill. Once they scattered, screaming in terror, he would hunt them down one by one...
In the cave, Sun Fei saw many mutilated human corpses.
Some lay on the ground, while others were bound to pillars, their intestines spilling from their chest cavities and their eyeballs gouged out. Some female Rogues had even been raped by these hideous monsters. Swarms of flies buzzed around the rotting corpses, making for a sight too gruesome to bear.
The scene filled Sun Fei with anger toward the monsters.
As a human, although he knew this was only a game world, he couldn't help putting himself into the scenario. A blazing fire burned in his chest, and he hacked at the monsters like a madman.
Finally, after an unknown length of time,
as the monster before him struggled and fell into a pool of blood with a pitiful howl, brilliant golden rays suddenly streamed down from overhead, illuminating every corner of the cave and making the darkness as bright as day...
Then a familiar voice sounded in Sun Fei's mind-
"Congratulations, player Sun Fei. You have passed the Diablo World's first trial with distinction and completed the quest issued by Sister Akara. You may now return to the Rogue Encampment and find Akara to claim your reward..."
The voice instantly brought Sun Fei to his senses.
Panting, he looked around and was surprised to discover that, without knowing when, he had killed every monster. Even Corpsefire, the mini-boss of the [Den of Evil], had long since perished beneath his axe. Glittering gold coins and all kinds of equipment lay scattered across the ground.
"Did I just go berserk?"
Sun Fei looked back on it and found it unbelievable. Had the scenes in this game world really enraged him enough to go berserk? He couldn't really be blamed, though. The world was simply too realistic, and those humans who had died such terrible deaths had stirred the anger deep within him.
After standing there in a daze for a while, Sun Fei began cleaning up the battlefield.
Gold coins didn't take up inventory space, so Sun Fei first picked up every coin on the ground. Then he began selecting other valuable equipment and stuffing it into his inventory. To his delight, there were actually two pieces of green equipment on the ground, glowing faintly green. They had probably dropped when he hacked the cave boss Corpsefire to death.
Drooling, Sun Fei stepped forward and picked them up.
But-
"Fuck! A mage's staff and a katar? Are you kidding me? Why isn't either of them barbarian equipment?"
Once he saw what the green equipment was, Sun Fei was bitterly disappointed.
After finally getting some higher-grade green equipment, neither piece could be used by a barbarian. It was like a horny lecher taking a little blue pill, bringing two beauties home, and stripping them bare in a few hurried moves, only to discover just as he was about to mount them that the two beauties were actually Thai ladyboys. It was frustrating enough to make him want to cough up blood.
"Fuck my neighbor, what rotten luck, rotten luck!"
Helpless, Sun Fei had no choice but to put the two unidentified pieces of green equipment in his inventory for the time being. Since he couldn't use them, he would take them back and sell them to Akara.
After putting everything away, Sun Fei activated a [Scroll of Town Portal].
He planned to return to the [Rogue Encampment], turn in the quest to Sister Akara, and claim his reward. While he was there, he would ask her exactly why he had come to this bizarre world.
That question had troubled him for a long time.
But just then, something unexpected happened-
"Attention, player Sun Fei. You have reached the daily game time limit. Countdown to departure from the game world... 3... 2... 1, shutting down the game..."
That mysterious, cold voice suddenly sounded in Sun Fei's mind again.
