"May I ask where you're headed?" Mu Rufeng asked.
"Terror Hospital," the Charred Oddity replied.
"For treatment?"
The Charred Oddity shook his head. "Fully treating my injuries would cost quite a few Soul Coins. My recent investments failed, and I owe some outside debts. I even bought my ticket for this train on credit. I really can't spare any extra money."
The Charred Oddity had been a Firefighter in life. Even after death, some belief seemed to remain in his heart, miraculously preserving a portion of his sanity.
He had already been prepared to ask the conductor for credit, or borrow money from those oddities, so that the newbie players could switch seats.
And what Mu Rufeng had done had indeed solved a rather troublesome problem for him.
"Investment failure? How much do you need altogether for the debt and treatment costs?" Mu Rufeng asked.
The Charred Oddity had not wanted to answer, because the figure was simply too large.
Yet faced with Mu Rufeng's question, the Charred Oddity finally raised a hand and held out one charred finger.
"Ten million? Sure. What's your card number? I'll transfer it to you," Mu Rufeng said.
"Huh? What?" Several question marks seemed to appear over the Charred Oddity's head.
One finger had meant one million.
Some time ago, his investments had failed—or rather, he had been scammed by an oddity.
He had lost his savings of two hundred thousand, and had even ended up owing Heaven and Earth Bank five hundred thousand Soul Coins in loans.
Later, he had gone after the oddity that had cheated him for revenge.
Unfortunately, that oddity had quite a few accomplices. Although he had killed many oddities, the main culprit had not died, and he himself had been seriously injured as a result.
He had not recovered the investment money either, and treating his injuries would cost another three hundred thousand.
Adding it all up, his shortfall came to one million.
One million—an utterly terrifying figure.
Though at his peak, earning one million would have taken only two or three years.
But earning one million and saving one million were worlds apart, as different as heaven and earth.
In his injured state, saving one million was nothing but a fool's dream.
"Your card number. Give me your card number."
Mu Rufeng's voice pulled the Charred Oddity out of his thoughts.
"You have that much money?" The Charred Oddity tilted his head, his face full of suspicion.
"Just tell me your card number," Mu Rufeng continued.
"Fine. My card number is 671××××××××××××1808," the Charred Oddity said.
Mu Rufeng immediately connected with the Black Gold Card and attempted to transfer money to that account.
The next second, a prompt appeared in Mu Rufeng's mind.
Please confirm whether to transfer 10,000,000 Soul Coins to Heaven and Earth Bank account 671××××××××××××1808 under the name Zhang Xiaojie.
"Is your name Zhang Xiaojie?" Mu Rufeng asked the Charred Oddity.
"Yes, that's right." The Charred Oddity froze for a moment, then nodded.
"Done. It should have arrived. Take a look," Mu Rufeng said.
"Hm?" Zhang Xiaojie thought Mu Rufeng was joking.
But just then, he suddenly noticed something unusual on his person.
Very quickly, Zhang Xiaojie pulled out a card glowing with white light.
"M-My card... why did it turn into a Platinum Card?" Zhang Xiaojie stared blankly.
Soon, he thought of something and immediately took out his phone and opened his messages.
Then he saw a text message that left him stunned.
Your card ending in 1808 received a transfer of 10,000,000.00 yuan at 12:21 on July 17. Balance: 9,500,000.00 yuan.
"Y-You... you really transferred ten million Soul Coins to me?" Zhang Xiaojie was utterly shocked.
He simply could not believe it was real.
Ten million—an entire ten million Soul Coins.
Because he still owed Heaven and Earth Bank five hundred thousand, that amount had been deducted the instant the money arrived.
That was why only nine and a half million remained.
None of that mattered. What mattered was why this contractor possessed such enormous wealth.
Ten million. With his strength, he could truly say that he would struggle to earn that much in an entire lifetime, unless his power rose another step.
All kinds of emotions surged within Zhang Xiaojie. Since his death, he had not felt such emotions in a very long time.
"Do you need something from me?" Zhang Xiaojie calmed himself and slowly spoke.
"You seem pretty powerful. Can you contract with me? I've never contracted an oddity before," Mu Rufeng said.
As it happened, Mu Rufeng's Contract Slot was still empty, and he had encountered a powerful Firefighter ghost with kindness still in his heart.
Mu Rufeng felt that contracting him would be quite good.
"Wait, you said you've never contracted an oddity? You're a Level One contractor?" Zhang Xiaojie was shocked again.
Zhang Xiaojie found it strange that such a wealthy contractor had never contracted an oddity.
"Yeah." Mu Rufeng nodded.
Zhang Xiaojie shook his head. "If you want to contract me, come find me again after you reach Level Five."
"Don't worry about these Soul Coins. I'll definitely pay you back, I promise!"
"Level Five?" Mu Rufeng was slightly startled.
From the information Zhao Dayong had given him, Mu Rufeng knew that players had levels, and naturally, oddities had levels as well.
Oddities had nine levels in total. From low to high, they were: Wandering Soul—Red Ghost—Evil Ghost—Fierce Ghost—Vicious Ghost—Red-Clothed Vicious Ghost—Ghost General—Ghost King—Ghost Emperor.
These nine levels happened to correspond to the players' levels.
A contractor could not contract an oddity more than one level above himself.
For example, Mu Rufeng could currently contract at most a Level 2 Red Ghost.
That meant Zhang Xiaojie was actually a Level 6 Red-Clothed Vicious Ghost.
"You're a Level Six ghost?" Mu Rufeng's mouth felt a little dry.
"This is something I snatched from my enemy. It's useless to me, so I'll give it to you as interest."
Zhang Xiaojie took out a card from his body and handed it to Mu Rufeng.
Mu Rufeng accepted it subconsciously. After checking its attributes, he was immediately greatly shocked.
Flame Vehicle Card: Attach this card to any vehicle to release Hellfire, animate the vehicle, and grant it incredible abilities. Duration depends on the user's ghost power. Note: Requires at least Level 2 ghost power to use.
"Although you need to be Level Two to use it, I've already infused it with ghost power. You can probably use it around ten times, and each use can last two hours," Zhang Xiaojie said.
"This card is great. I really like it." Mu Rufeng was delighted and immediately tucked the card away inside his bandages.
He asked again, "By the way, how many stops until Terror Hospital?"
Zhang Xiaojie replied, "After Kunshan Chicken Farm, it'll be Terror Hospital."
"Alright. I still need to go to the Dining Car, so I won't disturb you any longer." Mu Rufeng nodded and spoke.
