Chapters 1–18 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 1A seasoned physician must know how to snatch people from death's grasp

Wu Yi woke on Watatsumi Island and used the Power of Abundance to revive Teppei, impressing Lumine and Paimon. As Teppei came back to life, Wu Yi sensed a deathly gaze watching him from behind.

  • Wu Yi woke near Lumine and Paimon, injured and caught between the Hunt and Abundance powers within him.
  • Wu Yi recognized Teppei and used the Power of Abundance to heal his body and draw his soul back from underground.
  • Teppei revived and saw Lumine, Paimon, and Wu Yi standing around him.
  • Paimon marveled at Wu Yi's ability to bring back the dead, while Wu Yi called it a physician's essential skill.
  • Wu Yi frowned as an unseen presence sent him a chilling gaze filled with the aura of death.

Ch. 2A Night Visit from "Death"

Wu Yi healed Teppei and the Resistance soldiers whose vitality had been drained by Delusions, while studying Teppei’s Delusion and gaining Kokomi’s trust. At midnight, a maid died outside his room, and a mysterious woman calling herself “Death” warned that mortals should not interfere with life and death.

  • Wu Yi revived Teppei, criticized his reckless use of the Delusion, and persuaded him to rely on his own efforts to grow stronger.
  • Wu Yi examined Teppei’s Delusion, infused it with vitality, and made its Electro power surge; Kokomi then arrived and permitted him to keep it.
  • Wu Yi asked to treat the Resistance soldiers harmed by Delusions, bathed and changed at Sangonomiya, and healed the patients.
  • Kokomi praised Wu Yi’s compassion, but he said he treated illnesses to practice his own path rather than to save people.
  • Wu Yi studied the Delusion in his guest room until midnight, when he found a maid dead in the corridor and heard a woman speak as “Death.”

Ch. 3[Ruler of Death] Ronova

Wu Yi learned that the being possessing the maid was Ronova, the Ruler of Death, one of the shadows of the Heavenly Principles. She explained that by reviving Teppei after his soul had left his body, Wu Yi disrupted the death process, and warned that the Ley Lines would take an innocent soul to make up for the loss.

  • The maid rose with a deathly aura and golden, star-marked eyes as an unknown being spoke through her to Wu Yi.
  • The being identified Wu Yi as a Descender and rebuked him for interfering with death.
  • Wu Yi pressed the being for her name, and she introduced herself as Ronova, the Ruler of Death.
  • Ronova explained that souls must return to the Ley Lines for death to be complete and that Wu Yi had interrupted her work by saving Teppei.
  • Ronova warned that the Ley Lines would draw an innocent soul from elsewhere to replace the one that had not returned.

Ch. 4An Unexpected Visitor

Wu Yi continued treating wounded soldiers on both sides of the Inazuman conflict while helping the Traveler prepare for her clash with the Fatui. After several days of work, La Signora arrived on Watatsumi Island and asked to see him.

  • Ronova restored the maid's soul, warned Wu Yi not to interfere with the Ley Lines again, and left without punishing him.
  • Wu Yi decided to keep saving people and modified a Delusion to store life force for safe use.
  • Gorou told Wu Yi that the Shogunate Army had attacked the Resistance, and Wu Yi agreed to treat the wounded.
  • Wu Yi gave Lumine the modified Delusion before she and Paimon set out to destroy the Delusion factory.
  • Wu Yi treated wounded soldiers on both sides, while the Traveler later reported fighting Scaramouche alongside Yae Miko and destroying the factory.
  • After several days of treating soldiers and modifying Delusions, Wu Yi was summoned by the Fatui Harbinger La Signora.

Ch. 5Recruitment by the Fatui (Two-in-one)

La Signora met Wu Yi outside Bourou Village and tried to recruit him into the Fatui after praising his medical and Delusion research. Their tense exchange ended with her formal invitation, while Wu Yi’s display of seven powered Delusions left her wary of his strength.

  • Kokomi told Wu Yi that La Signora had requested a meeting, and he agreed to see her outside Bourou Village.
  • La Signora introduced herself and praised Wu Yi’s healing work and mastery of Delusions, while hinting at the Fatui’s intelligence network.
  • Wu Yi revealed that he knew Rosalyne’s history as the Crimson Witch of Flames, unsettling La Signora.
  • La Signora claimed the Fatui had sponsored Watatsumi’s resistance and warned that a Harbinger could defeat its forces alone.
  • Wu Yi showed La Signora seven charged Delusions of different elements, shocking her with the possibility that he could wield them all.
  • La Signora set aside her posturing and formally invited Wu Yi to join the Fatui.

Ch. 6Because This Was the Road They Had Once Walked Together

Rosalyne tried to recruit Wu Yi into the Fatui, first praising his medical skills and Delusion modifications, then arguing that Snezhnaya could offer him a place to heal the sick and wounded. Wu Yi left her motives uncertain and reflected that his devotion to healing came from the path he had once walked with his teacher and senior fellow disciple.

  • Rosalyne offered Wu Yi a place in the Fatui and denied that she had come to seize his technology or force him to Snezhnaya.
  • Wu Yi rejected money and power as reasons to join and asked Rosalyne to explain what the Fatui could offer him.
  • Rosalyne guessed that Wu Yi's power was tied to medicine and that he would go wherever people needed healing.
  • Wu Yi neither confirmed nor denied her guess, reflecting that his power came from following the Path of Abundance and that healing itself fascinated him.
  • Wu Yi remembered walking the path of healing with his teacher and senior fellow disciple, though they had since been separated by unknown fates.

Ch. 7Conditions for Joining the Fatui

Rosalyne persuaded Wu Yi to consider joining the Fatui by offering him access to patients, medical cases, and resources in exchange for treating Delusion side effects. Wu Yi agreed conditionally and gave her four terms to present to the Tsaritsa.

  • Rosalyne offered Wu Yi access to information about future conflicts and difficult illnesses so he could find patients to treat.
  • She promised him Harbinger status, resources, and custom Delusions in exchange for treating Fatui soldiers suffering from Delusion side effects.
  • Wu Yi weighed the offer and decided he was willing to join the Fatui.
  • Wu Yi required that his relationship with the Tsaritsa remain cooperative and that he be free to leave whenever he wished.
  • Wu Yi demanded an end to testing Delusions on people from other nations and the destruction of Fatui Delusion factories abroad.
  • Wu Yi also prohibited using Delusions made with his help against other nations and reserved the right to refuse military service; he told Rosalyne to seek the Tsaritsa's agreement.

Ch. 8Fierce battle at Tenshukaku, resurrecting La Signora (two-in-one)

Wu Yi learned that the Tsaritsa had accepted his conditions and joined the resistance’s surprise attack on Inazuma City, where Kazuha saved Lumine from the Raiden Shogun’s killing blow. After the Traveler and the Shogun vanished into a spatial rift, Wu Yi entered Tenshukaku and found La Signora reduced to ashes, then resolved to resurrect her.

  • Kokomi asked Wu Yi about La Signora’s recruitment offer, and he agreed to keep in touch with her if he went to Snezhnaya.
  • Lumine, Beidou, and La Signora sent word that the resistance would attack Tenshukaku in two days, the Tsaritsa had accepted Wu Yi’s conditions, and Lumine would expose the Tenryou Commission’s betrayal.
  • Wu Yi joined the resistance as Beidou, Gorou, and Kazuha led a night landing and fought through Inazuma City toward Tenshukaku.
  • The Raiden Shogun attacked Lumine outside Tenshukaku, but Kazuha’s reawakened Vision let him block her strike before the Shogun and Lumine disappeared into a spatial rift.
  • Wu Yi entered the empty Tenshukaku, found Kujou Sara unconscious and La Signora reduced to ashes, and decided he could resurrect her with his power of Abundance.

Ch. 9Rոնava: Is It Fun to Cause Me Trouble?

Wu Yi resurrected Rosalyne from her ashes and recovered soul, then explained why he could not necessarily revive someone dead for five hundred years. Rosalyne hid behind a pillar after realizing she was naked, just as a rift opened and a voice confronted Wu Yi.

  • Wu Yi reconstructed Rosalyne's body from her ashes and pulled her soul back from beneath Teyvat, reviving her.
  • Rosalyne learned the Raiden Shogun had killed her and asked whether Wu Yi could revive someone from five hundred years ago.
  • Wu Yi explained that revival required physical remains and a soul that had not been absorbed by the Ley Lines.
  • Wu Yi pointed out that Rosalyne had no clothes, and she hurried behind a pillar while angrily accusing him of looking.
  • A rift opened in Tenshukaku, and a voice asked Wu Yi whether it was fun to cause trouble.

Ch. 10Miss Ronova, Would You Marry Me?

Wu Yi met Ronova, the Ruler of Death, and explained his independent devotion to the Path of Abundance. After Ronova reflected on having no companions, Wu Yi asked whether she would marry him.

  • Ronova emerged from a rift, and Wu Yi mistook her for Idrila before she introduced herself as the Ruler of Death.
  • Wu Yi explained that Idrila embodied Beauty, and Ronova forgave his mistaken identification.
  • Ronova asked about Wu Yi’s belief in Abundance, and he explained that he followed the Path rather than blindly worshipping its Aeon.
  • Ronova praised Wu Yi as an excellent follower and companion, then privately lamented that no one wanted to walk alongside Death.
  • Wu Yi asked Ronova whether she had a partner and whether she would marry him.

Ch. 11Miss Ronova Says One Thing but Means Another

Wu Yi unexpectedly proposed to Ronova, the Ruler of Death, and admitted he was drawn to her despite barely knowing her. Ronova rejected the idea and insisted she would still fulfill her duty, but she softened enough to praise his candor and courage.

  • Wu Yi proposed marrying Ronova, leaving her startled and asking why he would choose a partner after meeting her only twice.
  • Wu Yi decided not to analyze his feelings and told Ronova it was love at first sight, or perhaps lust at first sight.
  • Ronova called Wu Yi an audacious mortal for professing love to Death and ordered him to put away his desires.
  • Wu Yi said he had no expectation of preferential treatment and had spoken because he admired her beauty.
  • Ronova rejected Wu Yi and said she hoped not to see him again, then praised his eye for beauty, candor, and courage.

Ch. 12"Death" Shows Leniency

Wu Yi explained his past experiences with being treated as a superior, while Ronova insisted on her divine status and revealed why she had killed Rosalyne and Kujou Sara. After explaining that they would be resurrected with only brief memory loss, Ronova asked why Wu Yi had rescued Rosalyne, and he answered that he had done so because he was a physician.

  • Wu Yi recalled fleeing a planet where the Denizens of Abundance had revered him and offered him holy virgins, along with the many powerful roles he had played elsewhere.
  • Ronova dismissed Wu Yi's experience of superiority, then relaxed when he agreed that mortals could not comprehend the true sky and said she would consider leniency for his rule-breaking.
  • Ronova snapped her fingers, killing Rosalyne and the secretly listening Kujou Sara, then told Wu Yi that the Shade of Life would soon resurrect them with brief memory loss and possible nightmares.
  • Ronova asked Wu Yi why he had knowingly taken Rosalyne's soul back from the Ley Lines, offering not to punish him if he had been forced to act.
  • Wu Yi said nobody had forced him and that he had saved Rosalyne because he wanted to, explaining that a physician could not stand by and let someone die.

Ch. 13The Ineffective Authority over Death

Ronova tried to kill Wu Yi after sparing him from punishment for reviving someone, but her Authority over Death had no effect on him. Wu Yi concealed the reason and teased her, leaving Ronova flustered and demanding he describe her more grandly.

  • Ronova said she would return the revived woman's soul to the Ley Lines and erase Wu Yi's memories of the incident.
  • Ronova used her Power of Death on Wu Yi twice, but neither attempt affected him.
  • Ronova examined Wu Yi and asked how he could ignore her authority despite being in Teyvat.
  • Wu Yi concealed that his level of existence surpassed the world's authority and pretended not to know what Ronova meant.
  • Wu Yi called Ronova adorable, and she blushed before telling him to describe her as beautiful, elegant, dignified, and gracious.

Ch. 14Forging a Soul, Other Visitors from Beyond the World

Wu Yi prevented Ronova from claiming Rosalyne’s soul by using Soul Grafting Surgery to create a substitute that satisfied the Ley Lines. Ronova recognized him as the Fifth Descender and proposed three rules for his future efforts to save people.

  • Ronova’s Authority over Death failed against Wu Yi, and she suspected he might be connected to the Ruler of Life.
  • Wu Yi offered to sate the Ley Lines and crafted a substitute soul from a fragment of Rosalyne’s soul and a strand of his own soul.
  • The Ley Lines accepted the substitute soul, and Ronova marveled at Wu Yi’s unusual ability.
  • Ronova told Wu Yi that another outsider had appeared in Snezhnaya around the same time, but had died after touching the Curse of Death and revived without showing special abilities.
  • Ronova called Wu Yi the Fifth Descender and proposed an agreement with three rules for him to follow when saving people.

Ch. 15Three Ground Rules

Ronova laid down rules for Wu Yi’s resurrection ability and made him her apostle, giving him a token to summon her. After Ronova left Tenshukaku, Rosalyne awoke with no memory of her death and resurrection, and Wu Yi prepared to explain what had happened.

  • Ronova told Wu Yi he could save the living freely, but had to notify her and soothe the Ley Lines to resurrect the dead, and could not extract souls already merged with the Ley Lines.
  • Ronova ordered Wu Yi to keep his resurrection ability secret and make the Raiden Shogun and the Traveler believe he had saved La Signora before she died.
  • Ronova required Wu Yi to perform one task for her for every person he saved from death, leaving him owing her two tasks, and named him her apostle.
  • Ronova gave Wu Yi a black feather that could summon her or protect him, then departed through a spatial rift.
  • Rosalyne woke in Tenshukaku with her memories of dying and being resurrected erased, and accused Wu Yi of taking her clothes.

Ch. 16Heading to Snezhnaya

Rosalyne regained consciousness in Tenshukaku with no memory of her defeat, and Wu Yi explained that she had lost a Duel Before the Throne and survived the Raiden Shogun’s strike. Rosalyne rejected his suggestion that Snezhnaya might abandon her and decided to return there with Wu Yi to confront Inazuma and meet the Tsaritsa.

  • Wu Yi asked Rosalyne to recall why she had come to Tenshukaku, and she remembered her diplomatic meeting and subduing Kujou before her memories cut off.
  • Rosalyne asked where the Raiden Shogun was, and Wu Yi said she had gone to suppress the rebels.
  • Wu Yi lent Rosalyne his coat, then told her that she had lost a Duel Before the Throne to the Traveler.
  • Rosalyne realized the Raiden Shogun had struck her down and considered whether the Tsaritsa would abandon her after her death.
  • Rosalyne accused Wu Yi of trying to undermine her loyalty, then acknowledged he had saved her life.
  • Rosalyne decided to leave Inazuma for Snezhnaya with Wu Yi and take him to meet the Tsaritsa.

Ch. 17Aboard the ship

Wu Yi spent seven days aboard a Fatui ship after Rosalyne swiftly evacuated Inazuma, treating the crew and studying Liyue medicine. He found Rosalyne alone in the dining room, staring at a letter, and she asked why he had come.

  • Rosalyne explained that she had left Inazuma to avoid becoming a hostage and had arranged for Fatui agents to keep gathering intelligence.
  • Wu Yi examined Kolya, confirmed his Delusion-related ailments were cured, and advised him to rest and take a prescription.
  • Wu Yi recalled treating the ship’s crew and studying medical books and herbs gathered during a stop in Liyue.
  • Wu Yi went to the dining room for a late-night meal and found Rosalyne staring at a letter beside untouched food.
  • Rosalyne stiffened as Wu Yi approached and asked what he was doing there.

Ch. 18La Signora: Do You Know How to Communicate with Children?

Rosalyne asked Wu Yi for advice about repairing her strained relationship with Odette, the junior she had trained, and he suggested ways to communicate more openly. After considering his advice, Rosalyne asked whether he was interested in ballet performances.

  • Rosalyne recalled that she had complained when Wu Yi sat apart from her before, and Wu Yi reminded her exactly when she had said it.
  • Rosalyne wondered why Wu Yi affected her emotions, while Wu Yi realized her Abundance-created body made her feel closer to him.
  • Rosalyne told Wu Yi that a letter from The Knave concerned communicating with children, then explained that she had trained Odette and hoped she would leave the Fatui.
  • Wu Yi guessed that Rosalyne's strict, indirect way of showing care had strained her relationship with Odette, and Rosalyne asked how to improve it.
  • Wu Yi advised Rosalyne to express her care honestly, wait for Odette to mature, or ask a third party to mediate.
  • Rosalyne considered his advice and asked Wu Yi whether he was interested in ballet performances.
