By the time Rogers had endured the first mutation, it was already night.

Luke lifted the flap of the camp tent and walked in carrying a bowl of oatmeal porridge loaded with glucose.

"You're awake? The modification was a success."

That was the first thing Rogers heard after he opened his eyes and regained consciousness.

He struggled to his feet and stepped away from the reinforced, high-backed chair.

As he rubbed the marks left on his bound hands, he stretched his stiff limbs.

"Are you sure it worked? I don't feel the slightest change."

Rogers, wearing nothing but underwear and bare from the waist up, looked utterly confused.

When he had received the serum injection before, he had at least gone directly from a scrawny little guy to a hulking muscleman.

It had been a massive, obvious change inside and out, something anyone could see at a glance.

Yet the first mutation had been so agonizing, and it apparently had not produced any noticeable effects on him.

"Stephanie said that if you were still alive, it meant the modification had succeeded."

Luke shrugged and handed the oatmeal porridge to Rogers. With a hint of malicious delight, he said, "For the next few days, you'll have nothing but nutrient solution and glucose. Enjoy it while it lasts."

"What about you?"

Rogers spooned down the unappetizing oatmeal porridge and looked at Luke standing nearby.

Luke smacked his lips and said, "Cheese steak and roast chicken. I turned down Stephanie's invitation to try British food and picked a decent restaurant instead. Carter and I had dinner together."

The oatmeal porridge in Rogers's hands instantly became tasteless. He was not a vegetarian, and he had absolutely no interest in bland, thick porridge mixed with glucose.

"Can't I eat meat?"
