- Markings: Purple or violet patterns cover his body and tail; these illuminate when he activates sealing techniques 108 113 171.
- Eyes: Usually described with star-shaped pupils. His golden eyes narrow when he detects approaching enemies 113 183 184.
- Size: His complete form is fifty meters tall. His first summoned appearance is no more than twelve meters tall; he later appears over twenty meters tall outside the daimyo’s castle 113 114 122.
- Variable proportions: Can enlarge individual limbs, extending his arms beyond twenty meters even while using a smaller body 113.
Personality
Shukaku is notorious for his violent temper and destructive rampages. He treats trial participants as toys and enjoys frightening them as entertainment during his confinement. His pride also makes him sensitive to being dismissed because he possesses only one tail 110 113 114 123.
His defeat by Mukai exposes a pragmatic, self-preserving side. Once thoroughly outmatched, he buries his head in the sand and refuses to continue fighting. He later regards his quick submission as proof of good judgment, especially after witnessing Mukai brutalize other Tailed Beasts 115 171.
Under Mukai, his initial obedience develops into active loyalty. He follows construction orders, cooperates in a counterintelligence operation, and trusts Mukai to track the enemies stealing his chakra. He remains boastful and complains about studying, but completes his calculations because he wants access to Tailed Beast armor 117 171 183 184.
History
Confinement and the Shukaku Trial
Shukaku was sealed inside Bunpuku, who was held in Sunagakure’s heavily guarded sealing temple. His power formed the basis of the Shukaku Trial, through which selected shinobi attempted to awaken Magnet Release. Wind and earth affinities were prerequisites, but success also depended on compatibility with Shukaku’s chakra and the candidate’s mental strength 106.
| Trial Stage | Procedure | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Chakra synchronization | Candidates sense sealed Shukaku chakra around a stone pillar. | Screens for sufficient compatibility. |
| Combat test | Bunpuku releases a chakra-formed arm into a barrier room. | Measures how long each participant can withstand its attacks. |
| Mental confrontation | Candidates face Shukaku’s oppressive presence through Bunpuku. | Determines whether they awaken Magnet Release and how powerful it becomes. |
The trial arm normally possessed strength between an elite Chunin and a Special Jōnin. Destroying it would not injure Shukaku’s main body or Bunpuku 106 109.
During Fusa Ruru’s attempt, an Evil-Sealing Alms Bowl provoked Shukaku into a rage. His arm tripled in thickness, crushed Ruru’s steel Black Ant puppet, and forced Rasa to retreat. Danzo later revealed that some bowls contained traces of Kushina’s chakra, deliberately planted to provoke Shukaku 108 110.
Mukai shattered the berserk arm with the Hierarch Mecha before entering the final mental confrontation. Inside the consciousness space, he manifested the Freedom Gundam and overwhelmed Shukaku’s sand attacks with missiles and close combat. Shukaku ultimately refused to fight any further 109 114 115.
Bunpuku’s Death and the Summoning Contract
The Fusa rebellion endangered Bunpuku while Mukai remained in the consciousness trial. Because Bunpuku’s death would also kill Shukaku, Mukai offered the defeated beast a choice between submission and destruction. Shukaku accepted the contract to survive and avenge Bunpuku 111 116.
With Hatake Sakumo’s assistance, Mukai used Dan Katō’s Spirit Transformation Technique to implant a summoning formula in Shukaku’s mental world. This made Mukai the first person since Sunagakure’s founding to take Shukaku as a summoned beast 114 116.
The newly allied pair crushed the rebels’ giant scorpion and sandworm, then annihilated their elite forces with five Thunderstorm Drilling Air Bullets. Afterward, Shukaku answered a summons at Oasis Workshop and excavated defensive trenches outside the fortress 113 116 117.
Military and Reconstruction Campaigns
| Event | Shukaku’s Contribution |
|---|---|
| War against the Wind daimyo | Combined Drilling Air Serial Bullets with Pakura’s Scorch Release and Mukai’s wind technique in the attack that destroyed the daimyo’s castle 122. |
| Northern border defenses | Raised a twenty-meter sand wall between mountains on the Land of Birds border; Mukai subsequently solidified it 123. |
| Battle against Hanzo | Fought and badly injured Ibuse while Mukai, Konan, and Sasori engaged Hanzo 127 128. |
| Amegakure’s surrender | Killed Hanzo’s charging loyal guards with Sand Binding Coffin while Mukai addressed the remaining Rain Ninja 129. |
| Heavenly River Project | Helped excavate a border river channel and propel rain clouds toward the Land of Wind 144 145. |
| Subjugation of Isobu | Provoked the Three-Tails out of his pool with air bullets; Mukai intended Shukaku to help persuade him after the battle 163. |
| Defeat of Iwagakure | Sealed Roshi and the transformed Four-Tails inside a sand pyramid 171. |
White Zetsu Chakra-Theft Operation
While living on a reserved dune in the Death Desert, Shukaku detected three approaching modified White Zetsu and alerted Mukai through an internal computation node. The attackers wielded lava, ice, and Iron Sand, while a concealed Chakra Anchor absorbed his chakra 183 184.
Shukaku recognized the attack as an opportunity for Mukai’s tracking operation. He deliberately released his full power, let the cube fill, and pretended not to notice the attackers escaping underground. Mukai and Sasori recorded the cube’s signal and traced the underground network 184.
The cube held fifteen percent of Shukaku’s total chakra. The White Zetsu subsequently reported taking approximately seventeen percent overall, including two percent delivered to Danzo. Madara placed the remaining stolen chakra into the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 184 185.
Abilities & Skills
Magnet Release and Sand Manipulation
Shukaku controls sand instinctively, describing no need for formal calculation before Mukai begins assigning him lessons 117 183.
- Sand Waterfall Technique: Moves large volumes of sand for excavation and terrain reshaping 117 144.
- Extra-Large Sand Waterfall Technique: Raises successive sand waves large enough to form a twenty-meter border wall 123.
- Sand Waterfall Funeral: Produces a tsunami-like assault containing hundreds of tons of sand 114.
- Sand Binding Coffin: Kills Hanzo’s loyal guards after their leader’s defeat 129.
- Sand Shower: Launches masses of sand to intercept an extensive barrage of ice needles 184.
- Fine control: Extracts sand grains from mountain cracks and distributes incoming heat across a defensive wall 144 184.
Sealing Jutsu
Shukaku is identified as the Tailed Beast most skilled in Sealing Jutsu. Ordinary Evil-Sealing Alms Bowls cannot restrain his trial arm 108.
- Sand Waterfall Seal: Builds enclosing sand walls, compresses them into a pyramid, and locks the structure with purple sealing patterns 171.
- Reinforcement: His chakra hardens the sealing sand beyond refined steel 171.
- Suppression: The seal contains the weakened Four-Tails and steadily drains his chakra until his presence falls silent 171.
- Limit: The Iron Sand White Zetsu tears through a Sand Waterfall Seal during the staged chakra-theft battle 184.
Wind Release
Shukaku combines compressed air with sand for ranged and area attacks.
- Drilling Air Bullet: Fires a powerful mass of compressed air from his mouth 113.
- Drilling Air Serial Bullets: Launches successive air projectiles against large targets such as Ibuse 127.
- Super-Large Drilling Air Bullet: Helps drive rain clouds toward the desert 144.
- Sand Hail Bullets: Covers the trial chamber with sand projectiles, preventing candidates from safely waiting beyond his arm’s reach 108.
- Wind Sand Barrage: Fires sand-filled wind projectiles more than a meter across in his complete form 115.
Combination Techniques
- Thunderstorm Drilling Air Bullet: Mukai electrifies Shukaku’s compressed air and adds a self-destructing supercapacitor. Five consecutive shots destroy the rebel elite forces 113.
- Castle-destroying combination: Shukaku’s air bullets combine with Pakura’s enormous Scorch Release fireball and Mukai’s Wind Tunnel Restraint technique to produce a superheated attack 122.
Physiology and Limitations
- Poison immunity: Allows him to fight Ibuse without being overcome by its poison 128.
- Mobility: Despite his bulk, moves quickly on all fours with bounding, tanuki-like leaps 117.
- Body compression: Reduces his size to fit a summoning array when Mukai supplies insufficient chakra for a larger passage 116.
- Chakra reserves: Sustain large-scale construction and prolonged terrain manipulation, although his chakra can still be siphoned away 123 184.
- Unfavorable terrain: Warns that Isobu’s pool is the Three-Tails’ home ground and would suppress his effectiveness 163.
- Iron Sand: Recognizes the Third Kazekage’s technique as a power that previously suppressed him 184.
Equipment / Items
- Internal computation node — Activates when he detects approaching enemies and transmits a warning to Mukai 183.
- Shield of Shukaku — A defensive structure formed from his hardest sand, shaped into his likeness against Hanzo; later used as thick enclosing protection during the White Zetsu operation 128 184.
- Prospective Tailed Beast armor — A reward he hopes to obtain by completing Mukai’s assigned studies; he is not shown wearing it in the supplied passages 183.
Relationships
- Mukai — Summoner and master. Initially subdues Shukaku through force, then employs him in warfare, construction, and counterintelligence. Shukaku comes to regard Mukai’s strength as a reason for loyalty 115 116 144 171 184.
- Bunpuku — Former jinchūriki. Shukaku accepts Mukai’s contract partly to survive Bunpuku’s death and avenge him 106 116.
- Pakura — Fellow combatant and construction partner; contributes Scorch Release to their attack on the daimyo’s castle 122 123.
- Third Kazekage — His Iron Sand had repeatedly suppressed Shukaku, leaving him wary when a modified White Zetsu uses the same technique 184.
- Isobu — Fellow Tailed Beast whom Shukaku helps draw into a confrontation with Mukai 163.
- Nine-Tails — A target of Shukaku’s rivalry. He eagerly imagines accompanying Mukai to defeat the Nine-Tails and contrasts his own caution with that beast’s recklessness 171 184.
- Shimura Danzō — Enemy who helps provoke the trial rampage and later organizes the theft of Shukaku’s chakra 110 183.
- Madara Uchiha — Uses stolen Shukaku chakra to begin restoring the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 185 186.
