The piercing alarm still echoed sharply over Sunagakure, and the light from the defensive barrier at the village entrance was so bright it was blinding.
At least three Jonin with composed auras formed a triangular formation, locking Jonin Shira from Chunin and Anbu occupied key positions. The cold light of Kunai and Shuriken gleamed under the blazing sun, and the air was as tense as a fully drawn bowstring.
All eyes were fixed on the figure standing alone a hundred meters away, who had just created a scene of sudden advance comparable to a small natural disaster.
The sand and dust slowly settled, revealing the boy's face with its distinct features, hardened by the wind and sand, and his eyes that seemed to hold the faint light of the earth's veins.
Looking at the commotion, Shira sighed inwardly, realizing that her "return home" had indeed caused quite a stir.
He slowly raised his hands to indicate that he meant no harm. At the same time, the suffocating aura and the sense of distortion in the air around him quickly subsided and calmed down, returning to a state as calm as a deep pool.
However, the physique refined by four years of Natural Energy and the honing of the Third Activation still made him stand there like a rock sculpted by millions of years of wind and sand, exuding a calm and composed aura.
"Wait! Don't do it!" A slightly agitated, yet incredulous, trembling voice came from behind the fortifications.
A figure hurriedly pushed past several Chunin waiting in ambush and rushed to the front—it was Asuka!
He was taller and stronger than he had been four years ago, and there was a small scar on his face. But at this moment, his face was filled with shock, ecstasy and a hint of uncertainty. His eyes were wide open, staring intently at Shira's face.
"Zi... Shira? Is that you, Shira!"
The Asuka's voice trembled with excitement.
His shout was like a boulder thrown into a calm lake.
The Sunagakure, who were standing guard at the village entrance, were all taken aback, their wary eyes revealing deep astonishment and confusion.
Who? Shira? The Taijutsu prodigy Shira disappeared at the border four years ago?
Almost at the same time that Asuka shouted, another figure shot out from the village at an even faster speed, passing over everyone's heads in a few leaps and landing heavily beside Asuka. It was Sasori.
He looked even thinner and more gloomy than before, but the eyes he was staring at Shira at this moment were frighteningly bright. His lips were pursed tightly, and he even forgot to control the puppet in his arms, which had obviously been greatly modified and exuded a dangerous aura.
"It really is you!" Sasori's voice was dry, carrying a complex mix of relief and disbelief.
Captain Reppu also arrived. His old chest wound seemed to have lessened his effects, and his steps were steady. However, when he saw the unharmed and strikingly different Shira, this tough man's pupils visibly contracted.
Then, a complex smile slowly spread across his face, a mixture of relief, emotion, and a sense of accomplishment, and he nodded heavily to Shira.
With the Reppu Squad vouching for them, the tense atmosphere at the village entrance instantly dissipated. The three Jonin exchanged glances, their eyes still filled with surprise and doubt, but they slowly lowered their fighting stances, signaling that the alarm was off.
The piercing alarm stopped, and the light from the defensive barrier dimmed. The gathered ninjas, though still curiously observing Shira and whispering among themselves, had largely dissipated their hostility, replaced by intense curiosity.
"Make way! Everyone make way!"
A woman's voice, trembling with sobs, came from behind the crowd. The crowd parted, and Shira's mother, Rira, stumbled out, followed closely by her father, Shiya, whose usually silent face was now filled with barely concealed emotion.
Rira practically ran to Shira, her hands trembling. She wanted to touch her son's face, but dared not, and tears welled up in her eyes. "Son, my son. Is it really you? You're back? Are you alright? Ah? Let Mom see..."
She spoke incoherently, looking Shira up and down. Seeing that he was unharmed, even more upright and robust than before, her tears flowed even more fiercely, but they were tears of joy.
Shiya stood behind his wife, his lips moved, but in the end he only punched Shira's chest, his voice choked with emotion. "It's good that you're back... it's good that you're back." A thousand words were contained in those four words.
Looking at her parents' noticeably aged faces, and at the undisguised joy and worry in their eyes, Shira felt a sudden pang of sadness.
Four years of separation, with his life hanging in the balance, and now he has finally returned safely. He grasped his mother's trembling hand and nodded heavily to his father. "Dad, Mom, I'm alright. I'm back."
Just then, two more figures squeezed through the crowd— Ameno and Matsuri. Ameno had blossomed into a graceful young woman, wearing Sunagakure Forehead Protector, her face having lost much of its childishness. But upon seeing Shira, two blushes still involuntarily rose to her cheeks.
Her eyes sparkled with joy as she whispered, " Shira, welcome back."
Ji stood beside her, smiling and winking at Shira: "Yo, the missing person has returned! Looks like you've been doing quite well out there, your aura was intimidating just now."
Yukata also came over and nodded to Shira. Although she didn't say anything, her eyes showed concern.
More and more familiar or unfamiliar faces gathered around, mostly village ninjas and civilians, pointing and whispering as they looked at Shira.
"Is it really that kid, Shira?"
"My God, was he the one who made that commotion? Where has he been for the past four years?"
"He looks so strong, he seems completely different now."
"I heard he was taken away by some reclusive master, it seems it's true?"
Surrounded by the crowd, Shira felt a warm current welling up in her heart as she experienced the long-lost human warmth of Sunagakure, a warmth that carried the scent of Sunagakure.
While dealing with the concerned inquiries from his parents and companions, he gave a brief, pre-prepared explanation: he had met a senior, followed him in cultivation, and had now returned after completing his studies.
His gaze swept across the crowd and landed on a distant rooftop where Yashamaru had appeared and was quietly watching them, along with Gaara, the red-haired figure carrying a gourd.
Gaara's gaze met Shira's for a fleeting moment. The emptiness in his deep green eyes had been replaced by a calm. He smiled and nodded gently at Shira.
Shira smiled and nodded at him, a slight thought stirring in her heart. Gaara's changes seemed even greater than she had imagined. He even had the standard gourd.
"Alright, alright, everyone disperse! Go do whatever you were doing!"
Captain Reppu waved his hand, beginning to disperse the growing crowd. " Shira just got back, let him spend some time with his family first! We can talk about it later!"
Although the crowd was curious, they gradually dispersed.
The three Jonin gave Shira another deep look before turning and leaving, presumably to report to their superiors immediately.
Shira finally managed to break free from the crowd and, surrounded by her parents and Reppu, headed home.
The setting sun cast long shadows of them, and the air was filled with the unique scent of Sunagakure.
The Asuka hooked its arm around Shira's neck, chirping excitedly and asking all sorts of questions.
Sasori followed silently beside him, but his tense lips relaxed. Sada leaned on his cane, listening to the Asuka' chatter with a smile.
Captain Reppu walked behind, looking at Shira's tall and straight back with deep emotion in his eyes.
Rira held her son's hand and chattered on about the big and small things that had happened in the village over the past four years. Shiya walked beside his wife with his hands behind his back, listening, occasionally interjecting a word or two, but his gaze was mostly on his son.
Shira listened, smiled, and responded, savoring the simple warmth of something lost and then regained.
The village roads, the houses on both sides, and even the drought-resistant plants that stubbornly grow in the corners of the walls are still the same as I remember them, yet they seem somewhat different.
He returned. He brought with him four years of emptiness, the gifts of the immortals, and power enough to stir up storms, back to the place where he was born and raised.
Shira of Sunagakure has returned.
And in this grand scheme of the Shinobi World, a "variable" whose trajectory and significance no one can predict has quietly entered the game.
The peaceful Sunagakure, perhaps, has begun its countdown from this moment on...
