The morning light pierced through the thin, new-type windproof and light-filtering barrier above Sunagakure, falling on the streets. It was no longer as scorching and violent as it had been years ago, but had become gentle and bright.
Along the streets, clusters of tender yellow flowers bloom on the drought-resistant sea buckthorn and golden bell plants, swaying gently in the breeze and emitting a faint, fresh fragrance similar to sun-dried sand.
The once bare rock face is now covered with lush green ironwood vines, which have deeply penetrated the crevices of the rocks, adding a large expanse of vibrant green to the gray-yellow background.
Shira walked steadily down the street. At fifteen, he had fully grown in stature, standing at 1.85 meters tall, which was quite tall among his peers in Sunagakure. He had broad shoulders and a narrow waist, with smooth, yet not muscular, muscles that were the result of long-term rigorous Taijutsu and perfect control over his own strength.
He wore a simple dark gray stand-up collar short robe, matching trousers, and a long sword named " Blue Mountain Haze " tied at his waist. His Sunagakure Forehead Protector reflected a warm luster in the morning light.
A few stray hairs brushed past the corners of his calm eyes. His face, which had lost the last trace of childishness, had distinct features, a high nose bridge, and lips that were habitually pursed. Only when his gaze swept over certain places would a hint of gentleness be revealed.
Beside him was Ameno.
Several years have passed, and the shy girl who diligently practiced Water Release has blossomed into a graceful young woman. She wears a light blue, fitted long dress popular among female ninjas of Sunagakure, with a beige, sheer blouse over it, outlining her slender figure. Her fair skin seems to glow softly in the desert sun.
Her full breasts filled out her clothes, creating a beautiful curve that swayed gently with her steps. Her long brown hair was tied into a neat ponytail at the back of her head, revealing her beautiful neck.
She tilted her head slightly, talking to Shira, a gentle smile on her lips, a faint blush on her cheeks, whether from the sunlight or something else, it was hard to tell.
"Wow, that's fast," Shira's gaze swept over a newly opened puppet parts shop on the street, its sign shimmering with Chakra light, then looked at the new public transport puppet bus that was being tested in the distance, and she sighed softly, "It feels like just a few years ago, the village wasn't like this."
"Yes," Ameno's voice was clear and crisp, filled with satisfaction. "The streets are wider and cleaner, and there are so many more trees and flowers. My mother said the other day that now when we go to the market, we can take the ' Sand Boat ' puppet train, which is fast and stable, and we don't have to walk all that way under the sun anymore. I heard that next month, the direct rail line to the new northern oasis will also be put into trial operation, and fresh vegetables and fruits can be delivered to the village on the same day."
As she spoke, her eyes curved into crescents, a genuine joy at the village's improvement.
Shira nodded, her gaze falling on the newly planned residential area below Kazekage Rock in the distance. Rows of stone buildings, all with the same style but each with its own unique characteristics, were neatly arranged, and many balconies were decorated with drought-resistant potted plants.
"The changes are indeed significant. It's not just the houses and roads; the expressions on people's faces are different too."
He recalled walking the streets a few years ago and seeing more weariness, wariness, and numbness, while now he saw more groundedness, busyness, and anticipation for the future.
Ameno gave a soft "hmm" and naturally reached out to take Shira's arm. Shira's body paused almost imperceptibly, then relaxed, her arm tightening slightly to make Yu Nai more comfortable.
There was an unspoken intimacy and tacit understanding between them. Over the years, from the hazy feelings of their youth to witnessing each other's growth, their relationship, like a plant that grows tenaciously in the desert, has quietly taken root and deepened under the nourishment of wind, sand, and time.
"By the way, is your restaurant super popular, Uncle and Aunt's?" Ameno looked up at him, her eyes sparkling.
"Last time I went with Matsuri and Yukata, we almost couldn't get a table! The auntie also said that they've recently introduced several new dishes made with ingredients from the new oasis, and they're very popular."
Mentioning his parents, Shira's face broke into a smile, a smile that softened the usual composure between his brows. "Yes, they are busy, but quite happy. Father is working on recipes, Mother is managing the accounts and greeting guests, and they've even hired a few helpers. Today they invited everyone over, so it'll be a good opportunity for them to try the new dishes."
"Is everyone coming?" Ameno asked, her voice filled with anticipation.
"Yes, we've notified almost everyone." Shira glanced at the sky. "It's about time, let's head over."
The two walked through the increasingly bustling streets and turned into a relatively quiet alleyway paved with smooth stone slabs.
At the end of the alley, a three-story stone building, simple in appearance but very clean, came into view. The wooden sign hanging at the door was engraved with the three large characters " Hourglass House " in vigorous and powerful strokes, and a simple hourglass pattern was drawn next to it.
Compared to the tiny shop that could only fit a few tables a few years ago, this is now a proper restaurant. There are even two small civilian puppet beasts parked at the entrance for short-distance transport of ingredients.
Before even entering, I could hear lively laughter and chatter coming from inside.
Pushing open the wooden door adorned with wind chimes, a warm aroma of food mingled with a faint scent of alcohol wafted out. The spacious and bright lobby on the first floor featured a dozen sturdy wooden tables, most of which were already occupied by guests.
Shira's father, Shiya, wearing an apron, was introducing new dishes to a table of guests with a beaming smile, while her mother, Rira, was efficiently doing the accounts behind the counter. When she saw Shira and Ameno come in, her face immediately lit up with a smile.
" Shira! Ameno! You're here!" Rira walked around the counter to greet them, took Ameno's hand and looked her up and down, her eyes full of affection. "You look even more beautiful! Come on, everyone's here in the 'Oasis' room upstairs, we're just waiting for you two!"
Shiya smiled and waved in their direction, mouthing, "Go up quickly."
Shira nodded to her parents and led Ameno up the wooden staircase on the side to the second floor. The second floor had several private rooms. They went to the innermost room, where a small wooden plaque with an oasis pattern hung on the door.
Gate of Opening, an even greater clamor and warmth rushed out.
The room was large, with a large round table in the center that could easily seat more than a dozen people, already laden with a dazzling array of dishes: fragrant roasted lamb leg, golden and crispy fried Sasori, various salads made with vegetables from the new oasis, rich and aromatic camel milk stew, and several large platters of uniquely shaped desert-style snacks, clearly made by Shiya herself. The table was already full of people.
With his red hair and calm demeanor Gaara sat quietly by the window, a glass of water in front of him.
He was dressed in casual clothes, his demeanor calm. When he saw Shira enter, he nodded slightly. Yashamaru sat beside him, smiling and talking to Temari.
Temari wasn't wearing her battle attire today, but rather a sleek beige hunting outfit. Her golden ponytail was tied high, making her look dashing. She was fanning herself with a miniature model of Three-Star Fan, arguing with Kankuro across from her about a recent puppet modification plan.
Kankuro seemed to have added new mechanisms to his Crow puppet, his fingers gesturing excitedly. The face paint on his face didn't look so exaggerated under the indoor lights; instead, it gave him a touch of an artist's unruliness.
He was sitting next to the Saya and Sana sisters. Sana was trying to "steal" a fried scorpion from Sasori's plate when Sasori tapped the back of her hand lightly with the Kunai, making her stick out her tongue.
Koji, the Shira knew from her time at the Ninja Academy and who later became Chunin through hard work, was chatting and laughing loudly with Asuka, Sada, and others. Asuka was gesturing wildly as she talked about some interesting anecdotes from a mission, which made everyone burst into laughter.
Matsuri sat quietly beside her Yukata, eating vegetables in small bites, her gaze occasionally drifting towards Gaara.
"Yo! The main characters have finally arrived!" Asuka was the first to spot Shira and exclaimed excitedly, "We've been waiting for you! Quick, quick, Shira, sit here! Ameno, sit next to Matsuri!"
"Sorry I'm a little late." Shira smiled at everyone and naturally Earth Flow the empty seat next to the head of the table and sat down—that seat seemed to have been reserved all along. Ameno also blushed and sat down between Matsuri and Yukata amidst the girls' greetings.
" Shira!" Koji raised a glass of beverage. "Everyone has heard that last month you led a team to the border of the Land of Rivers and cleanly and efficiently dealt with a group of rogue missing-nin. Even Konoha sent a letter praising your excellent cooperation! Impressive! I'll toast you with tea instead of wine!"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Asuka chimed in, "And also, when are you and Ameno going to invite us to your wedding?"
" Asuka!" Ameno's face turned even redder. She grabbed a jujube and threw it over, which Asuka caught with a grin.
Shira picked up her teacup, gestured to Koji, took a small sip, and said calmly, "It's just a mission. As for you guys, I heard that the rookie class led by Sada completed their first long-distance mission very well."
He skillfully steered the conversation away from the topic, his gaze sweeping over his companions. Each of them was more mature and confident than they had been a few years ago, exuding the sharp edge unique to the new generation of Sunagakure.
Sada, leaning on his cane, chuckled upon hearing this, his face etched with satisfied wrinkles. "It's all thanks to the village's excellent training. The new recruits today have a much more solid foundation than we did back then."
The conversation quickly spread. Temari talked about the diplomatic documents she had recently helped her father with, mentioning that the trade agreement with the Land of Snow had been renewed, and that the imported insulation materials had made the winters much more comfortable for the elderly in the village.
Kankuro excitedly shared the latest developments at the Puppet Research Institute, mentioning things like "mimicry camouflage shells" and "low-energy levitation cores," which made even Sasori raise his head in amazement.
Some shared their observations from the newly established medical training course, how many comrades had been saved by the new first aid techniques and detoxification plans. Others whispered about their insights from intelligence analysis.
Although Gaara doesn't talk much, he occasionally adds a word or two when Yashamaru or Temari mention him, his expression calm and natural, completely blending into the lively atmosphere.
Shira, occasionally interjecting a word or two, her gaze sweeping over every familiar face, her heart filled with a peaceful warmth.
This is what he protected, this is the meaning of the change. A powerful village, a prosperous life, companions with whom he could gather and laugh in peace, and happiness within easy reach.
" Shira," Gaara suddenly spoke, his voice not loud, but it silenced the table for a moment. Everyone looked at him, including Shira.
Gaara picked up the glass of water in front of him, looked at Shira, his deep green eyes clear and bright. "Thank you."
He didn't say anything in particular as thanks. Perhaps it was thanks for standing up for him back then, for his companionship on the training field, for his advice to his father, for pulling him back from the brink of loneliness, and perhaps for all the changes he brought about.
Shira looked at him, and after a moment, she also picked up her teacup and gently clinked it against Gaara's.
"You're welcome." He only said two words.
Everything is understood without words.
Seeing this, Yashamaru's eyes welled up with tears, and he quickly lowered his head to pick up some food. Temari and Kankuro exchanged a glance and both showed relieved smiles.
The atmosphere became lively again, and even more harmonious and warm. Delicious food, laughter, and hopeful discussions about the future intertwined to create the most touching everyday melody.
Outside the window, the setting sun bathed Sunagakure in a warm golden-red glow. In the distance, the Kazekage Rock stood silently, overlooking this increasingly prosperous land.
Further away, the faint sound of the whistle of the new " Sand Boat " train arriving at the station could be heard, long and full of vitality.
Shira leaned back in her chair, listening to her companions' chatter and feeling the occasional smiling glances from Ameno, a sense of peace settled in her heart.
This is his Sunagakure, his companions, his era.
The warmth of the everyday sun is more cherished than any other force, and it gives people the courage to keep moving forward.
The future may hold more challenges, but at least for now, for this moment, this scene, it is something to cherish with all our hearts.
The dinner party didn't end until late at night. Everyone said goodbye and promised to get together again next time.
Shira and Ameno the last to leave. They walked along the street, where the soft Chakra streetlights were already lit, and the night breeze was slightly cool.
"I'm very happy today," Ameno said softly, her hand quietly taking Shira's arm again.
"Mmm." Shira responded, pulling her closer to her to shield her from the night wind.
Sunagakure, bathed in starlight, is peaceful and serene. Tomorrow may bring new missions and challenges, but at least for now, one can enjoy this hard-won, ordinary warmth.
Their figures gradually blended into this desert city gently illuminated by starlight and lights.
